Raised by Wolves - S2ep8, season finale.
Just started. Will the show get even weirder? Hope so. :)

I haven't watched ep 6 either, so I'm not reading that post. :p

--

I watched the first ep of DMZ last night. Seems okay so far. The premise leans heavily on Escape From New York (1981) and The Warriors (1979). There was even a radio DJ who sounded a bit like Lynne Thigpen. I wondered if that was a deliberate nod to her, or just a coincidence. I like the cast. Rosario Dawson, Benjamin Bratt, Mamie Gummer. The guy who plays Wilson, Hoon Lee, reminded me so much of Michael Paul Chan (The Closer; Major Crimes), I looked to see if he was his son or nephew. Nope. The plot was bare-bones, and more than a little bit predictable, but it was enjoyable enough to keep watching, I think.

For All Mankind ep 6, "Home Again"

Spoiler :
They killed Gene?! You can't kill Gene! You [weasels]!

The 2-year time jump at the end of the last episode was also a little jarring, but okay.

Gordo and Tracy separating was no surprise. She should've left him sooner (although I did laugh out loud when she flushed the toilet in the previous episode).

I liked the scene with Margo and the guy in Mission Control, who I think we hadn't met before, about how little news there was about the deaths of the ground crew.

I finished the first season of For All Mankind over the weekend. Looking forward to the second, and I think I read that a 3rd season is on the way. I think it's done a good job of alternate history, if that's your bag. It's hard sci-fi, but it takes place in the 1970s rather than the future, so it's sorta "retro sci-fi." There was an action scene in the next-to-last episode that was surprisingly tense.

Overall, I definitely connected more with the women in the series, Margo at first, and later Tracy and Karen. I expected Sonya Walger to be a bigger part of the show, but by the end I felt like I knew Molly's husband more than I knew Molly. Gordo and Ed were sympathetic characters, but I never quite got attached to either of them. I have to admit, I've failed to connect with Joel Kinnaman practically his entire career. I don't know why. He was also in the American remake of The Killing (2011) with Mireille Enos, Michelle Forbes and Brent Sexton, which I liked a lot. I did like Deke. I remember that actor from Third Watch (1998 - he played Faith Yokus' husband).

For All Mankind trivia: I read that one of Ronald D. Moore's notes to himself on the series is that, in this alternate history, Sergei Korolev - the "father of the Soviet Space Program" - survived the surgery that killed him, irl, in 1966. I don't think that detail is ever shown or referenced onscreen, it's just part of the background.

I liked the 2nd season more than the 1st.
I wonder if the 3rd season has already been written and might be tweaked in the light of current events. :)

Ahhh, got back on track with rewatching The Mentalist, in which Simon Baker plays an insultant with the fictional California Bureau of Investigation.

1975’s Quiller. Good in some ways, cheap in others, but with a very 1970s theme tune.

I signed up for Apple TV and started watching For All Mankind, an alternate history type show about a longer space race due to the Russians landing on the moon first. I like the show but so many episodes are just sooo sloooow moving. I do enjoy some of the drama and interplay between the characters, but the pacing just seems way too slow too frequently.

It also seems that Apple TVs interface has been designed by idiots. How do I browse through all movies they have on offer? How do I narrow down to look at all sci-fi movies or TV shows? I haven't been figure out any of that yet.. The UI is so far not very user friendly. I don't even see a panel that shows me a list of all the shows/movies I haven't finished watching so I can continue. Tips?

You also have to manually mark episodes as watched after you finish them. Furthermore, I discovered the other day that if I quit watching an episode mid-way and come back later, it doesn't pick up where I left off. I had to manually fast-forward until I saw a scene I didn't remember watching.

It's designed for Apple users.

I'm an apple user, as far as my phone goes though. The UI seems really solid for all the apps I use on it. What's up with this backwards crappy apple TV UI? You have to mark every single thing you watched manually? What?

And is there really no way to look at all their offerings? So far I've only seen one page, the index page, that lists random stuff.. How do I look at all the other content they have on offer? Admittedly I haven't looked around *that* much, but I did a bit..

I just remembered another thing: If you're streaming their content through a web browser, you don't have access to your "Up Next" queue. You can add stuff to it, but you can't see it. It's only accessible if you watch Apple TV through a tv.

Brilliant lol. I might not stick around on this service long at all. They don't really seem to have that much content either. I mean, so far I haven't even been able to bring up a list of all their movies, or even a subset of their movies. When I browse through their index page random stuff pops up, but it seems like a handful of TV shows and movies, and not really a large amount of content.

If they do have more content but.. there is no way to get to it.. then.. what.. Maybe they limit the user experience if you're doing it via the web? That would be.. stupid. Good thing I'm on the trial. So far their streaming service seems to be the worst of the bunch

Yes, their streaming platform is 100% the worst I've used, and their library is limited. That said, they're inexpensive, and they do have some very good stuff. Severance is my "Series of the Year (So Far)", and it's not even close. I've also blazed through season 1 of For All Mankind and just started season 2. Ted Lasso got a lot of praise, although I've only watched the first ep. Someone told me See is a hoot (Jason Momoa kicking the snot out of people in a world where everyone has gone blind - I'm told the fighting choreography is a work of mad genius), but I haven't gotten to it yet. They also have two series coming in April that look cool: Slow Horses, an MI-5 drama (comedy-drama?) starring Gary Oldman and Olivia Cook; and Shining Girls, a serial-killer (sci-fi?) thriller starring Elisabeth Moss.

Trailers for Slow Horses and Shining Girls.

Keep in mind that AppleTV+ is not much more than a coupla years old. They basically started from scratch, and besides nabbing a few "at release" movies, their content is completely original. As an owner of an Apple TV smart tv device and the iphone, they gave me a free 1 year trial. With that said, I did not renew after the trial as, like you, I found the content to be lacking, as well as - for reasons I won't elaborate - generally found the content not to my liking. But "The Morning Show" is def worth watching - first season at least. And so far, Severance has proven to def be worth trying it out again briefly. I may stay a bit for the new Brit spy show (coming 4/1) with Gary Oldman and Olivia Cooke, as that is right down my alley.

As to the UI, I normally view + stuff via my tv/apple device and the tv ui is actually pretty good. I've been watching Severance though mainly on my puter, and completely agree with your UI complaints. I have to dig through the site just to find Severance each time I want to watch it. Even backing out of it is annoying.

Thanks @lymond and @EgonSpengler, I will look up some of those shows when I am finished w/ For all Mankind. I would have probably gone through it quicker, but parts feel like a bit of a slog and the pacing just feels so slow. Maybe it's me, we'll see, I am watching the next couple eps tonight.

Apple TV is indeed pretty cheap, so not a huge problem. I didn't realize they were so new, I'm not a huge apple user (except for my phone and a work ipad I own no other apple products) .. and I vaguely remembered a friend owning an apple TV box years ago

I'm probably going to stay on a month by month basis and eventually quit unless they eventually improve their UI. Is it easy to quit and sign on again 3 months later? :scan: I also want to check out Foundation, but it seems that once I'm done watching all their TV shows that I like.. might as well cancel for a while and come back once they have more stuff for me to binge and/or an improved UI

I don't mind pre-paying for the full year for something like Netflix, a service that has more or less proved itself to me already. Their UI is also not great, but it's a lot better

What is it with streaming service UI btw? There isn't one streaming service that has good UI. It's all mediocre or bad or in the case of apple really bad. Viewing options always seem limited in some way, even if the navigation is smooth and logical. I've gotten used to it, but if it was better I would be watching more... It's like they don't want me to watch too much or something
