What Video Games Have You Been Playing #12: Rage Quit - ain't my thing

You can set the difficulty for campaign and battles separately? I know you could in previous games, but when starting a campaign in R2 I just see one difficulty slider.

Yes, but in the campaign on the strategy layer you can change the battle difficulty. I think it's under game options.

I raged twice already today. multiplayer games bring out the worst in me. also, Teamfight Tactics is a trash game and I don't want to be its slave anymore.

Not to keep harping on the Dragon Age thing, but Dragon Age is the only game that brought out the beast in me.

I really can't overstate how much I hate that game.

hahaha that was your replay though, you'll not replay a game that is bad. But if your main is two handed heavy sword, then I understand your frustration

Well, it's January, 1820 - one year left in my EU4 Ryazan game. And I've accomplished my goals for the last two decades of the game:

- Beat the Mughals, took back my land, and one of their provinces. They're still a superpower, but Ming + Russia can contain them.
- Won a crusade against the Ottomans, took the eastern Mediterranean and a good chunk of the Holy Land from them. Converted Jerusalem to Orthodoxy.
- Steamrolled the Commonwealth, took all remaining East Slavic lands from them and made a nice-looking border.
- Gained enough power to eclipse Denmark, and they no longer hate me and try to destabilize me.
- Successfully waged war against Revolutionary Great Britain, the most powerful country in the world.

The war against Britain didn't stop the Revolution - in fact, during the war, Denmark fell to the Jacobins - but did kick Britain off the continent, with Holland becoming Russian, and an expansion of Ming Baja California. It also led to the formation of Merchant Republic Italy from Venice, after I gave them Papal lands. They were so thankful they broke their alliance with me - apparently Venice never renounced its claims to Crimean port cities, and after decades of alliance, they decided enough was enough. Oh well. I still have Albania on my side.

I wound up 3rd place in terms of development, trailing Revolutionary Great Britain and the Mughals, just ahead of the Ottomans. I'll take that for starting out as a 4-province minor, and being under the shadow of Muscovy and then the Ottomans for centuries.

Now it's just time for the victory lap. Put the Tsar in charge of an army, and have him visit as many of our allies' capitals as possible. I wonder if he can make it to both Paris and Beijing in one year?

I never finished the game though. I quit the first time and only went back to it at the request of my wife. I quit again relatively quickly though and decided to play Mass Effect again to remind me why I shouldn't go burn down Bioware's HQ.

Play ME:A to be reminded why you should....

That's EA's HQ, not Bioware's, at this point.

How did THAT game make you rage? It was supposed to be chill and not-so-competitive.

bad RNG. I always rage at any form of RNG. **** dice rolls. it is pretty chill, but it's also incredibly competitive. I've been playing it for one week and its already incredibly unfun. I blame the internet. a new game comes out and it only takes a few days and the metagame has formed. even today out of literally hundreds of possibly good combos every single player picks either Demons or Gunslingers, because they're strongest right now. everyone uses the same strat, same champions, same items. I remember in my earlier days when people were theorycrafting constantly, talking about builds on forums et cetera, honestly nowadays everyone just copies exactly what all the popular streamers do and that is called "optimal" and never questioned. god I hate myself for playing video games. I might go on hiatus and only play Sekiro and mod Skyrim for a while..

Kids, don't do drugs. I wanted to name the next thread, but then I did drugs and I totally forgot about it. Drugs. They're bad.

@Phrossack In Rome 2 think I'll just play on Very Hard and put the battles on Medium. That should be a bit more interesting, assuming I can make it past the early game.

is it very bad that I love you for reminding me there's other degenerates like me out there?

Well, I've regularly played private servers, and I've played retail WoW for years before (and years concurently), so it's more that I've experience at managing it :D

what pservers did you play on?

I'm into retrogaming now :) Maybe that's why I remember one MOO2 match very long ago with a very friendly player. Although he defeated me like a newbie I was , I've learned much about the game (he was kind to explain to me what I did wrong) so PvP is fun when played with right sort of people ;)

It's not a bad game though. It's not up to the standards of the original trilogy and the release version had an unacceptable amount of bugs, but it's not terrible.

Pretty much similar like the 2000 up chess game, most combination pretty much explored by books and computer, so people play very tight and save, and the game end up with a lot of draw and dull. There is two hour video talking about opening, just for an advantage of a pawn win in the early mid game. But for a complete amateur like me chess is still a very interesting game.

It seems the game that you play need more nerfed and buffed on certain character to bring back the dynamic.

i don't think nerfs or buffs do anything, i think the problem lies somewhere else. people (me included) are mostly trying to play optimally, and other people like streamers have such a big influence on the discourse that they can essentially shape it themselves. they say who is overpowered and who is not, and because everyone follows their lead the self-fulfilling prophecy unravels: the popular characters get nerfed and a new meta emerges. people do not really trust their own estimates nearly as much as they used to, because there is now a dedicated expert for literally anything.

if the smallest chance emerges for us to hang out, just hmu. I probably won't be in the states for the next decade or so, but you never know :)

my brother's been in Germany recently and one of my friends is about to start school in England so I may actually make it to Europe one of these days

I'm really, really frustrated with the way that Pokemon Go discriminates against bicyclists. Leveling is a function of distance traveled and clearly they have to scale things to keep bicyclists from dominating the game but right now they just straight up don't count any distance moved over a certain low speed (@Synsensa told me once but I forgot). I have gained 2 levels in 4 or 5 months and it takes me at least a week to hatch a single pokemon egg (they hatch according to how far you've traveled) and it's hella frustrating. I am also frustrated with the way it forces you to be in physical proximity to trade or battle with friends and the fact that you have to use stupid friend codes to set up in-game friendships instead of just login ID's or phone numbers. Gah

They added new Team Rocket battles which seem aight but I haven't really gone out of my way to learn the in's and out's of them. Battling at Gyms still sucks but it does seem like the Team Rocket battles are a bit better with more move varieties.

The Team Rocket fights are pretty rare (where I am, I've only seen 3), and kind of OP depending on the Pokemon used. Fighting a 5000 CP charizard was not fun. The purifying mechanic is interesting, I guess, but kind of useless in practice. It gives a massive boost to CP but the Pokemon you get from Team Rocket have insanely low CP. You could power up these Pokemon prior to purification if you have 300k stardust and over a hundred candies to spare but that is just not worth it for any of the Pokemon you get (I got a squirtle, a zubat, and a rattata).

Speaking of which, zubats are horrible. Their hitboxes are insanely inconsistent and the distance lies. The difficulty is also a lie, since it's always bright green but they break out constantly after a single RNG roll. Without fail I waste over 30 balls on each zubat. I need to catch 20 more for the final evo.

Pokemon GO starts docking you after 10.5 kph (6.5 mph). Reach that speed and it stops counting for bonuses/eggs. After a certain speed you can't spin PokeStops anymore, and then after another speed you don't get any Pokemon spawns.
