What Video Games have you been playing II: Have you finished that backlog?

I bought Mafia 2, hoping to enjoy it -- the original game has been an absolute favorite of mine for well over ten years -- but as soon as any mission starts it's choppy to the extreme. I don't know what element of my computer doesn't measure up to the game's requirements, but I'll look into it. I hope it's something easy to overcome, like memory, and not something more substantial like the processor. Does Steam have a functionality to analyze a pc's strengths against game requirements?

I know it is getting old, but Galactic Civilizations II is an absolute blast.
I set out to play a campaign as the Terrans focusing on diplomacy/influence, yet I managed to set off TOTAL GALACTIC WAR.
I had invaded the Dregin and Yor after they got sandwiched to prevent an AI from snowballing their way to victory, and thought I did a pretty good job of it. I ended up having the largest economy and military. After I managed to rule about a quarter of the galaxy by myself, I noticed that the Kyren were getting seriously beat up on by the Torians and Drath with the Torians grabbing most of the planets. Not wishing to face a Torian runaway AI (only thing worse than that is a Thalen runaway AI) I used my excellent diplomatic skill and long standing relations to get the Torians and Drath to make peace. Not wishing to fight a war with them until later, I made an alliance with the Kyren in the hopes that they would have no desire to go to war with the strongest faction in the galaxy.
I was wrong.
Within three turns the Torians declared war on the Kyren, I came to their aid, and that sparked off a whole chain of alliance oddities where everyone but the Yor were at war (although after I was through with them they were down to one extreme planet I couldn't be bothered research the tech for), the Iconians who were a joke of a power declared war on me, and I was fighting the Thalens while they remained allies to the Kyren.

Should be an interesting game.

I've been on a Warhammer 40k kick lately. I finally got around to downloading and playing Space Marine from Xbox Live Games on Demand. What a blast. Sure it's just a button mashing third person shooter, but man is it satisfying to do those execution moves.

After that I went back and played Fire Warrior again, that awful FPS with the decent cutscenes. Now I am play through the Dawn of War series again. I am up to Dark Crusade and playing as the Eldar. I already beat it as Chaos.

Haven't been ladder ranked. My crew and I are still practicing the game. How about you?

Anyone here play Banner Saga? What's it like?

I didn't care about it much until I read that it's art style was partially inspired by Sleeping Beauty (the Disney Princess movie), which I thought is pretty cool since I think in terms of aesethics Sleeping Beauty was the best Disney film. I kind of like the old school, kinda dark yet fairy tale like fantasy look.

Can I give a shoutout for New n Tasty: Oddworld Abe's Odyssey? It's one of the most faithful remakes I've ever seen. They've introuduced difficulty modes so if you prefer an easier ride you can get a health bar and extra checkpoints, or if you're hardcore (like me :smug:) you can play just like the original with one hit kills. The new rendered cutscenes look wonderful, the graphics are simplistic yet very charming and it's still very, very difficult. If you liked the original but haven't played for some time, look into this.

Note: it's not just a HD remake. It's completely remade with new scenery, dialogue and some new gameplay aspects. It really is great.

Well, Thailand just banned Tropico 5 for reasons of national security. Unless NPR was broadcasting a prank. :p

The gameplay is so-so, nothing amazing but not bad. But yeah, the aesthetics are beautifully stylistic, and the story's good. Not one I'd recommend at full price, but a good target to look out for in Steam Sales.

I'm guessing you played Oblivion before Skyrim? :D

Naturally. Morrowind is still by far my favourite TES game, though I did play Daggerfall for a year or two beforehand.

Would you be so kind as to PM me your mod list for Oblivion? I have an account on Nexus, so hopefully most are coming from there. I just cannot get into oblivion as I came to TES with Skyrim and Oblivion and Morrowind just seem backwards to me. I try and try and just can't get into them.

If I reinstall either MW or OB, I'll send you my mod-list too. :)

It definitely is a style over substance game. There is no denying that the art and music are beautiful, but it is populated with odd design decisions.
Firstly, a unit's health also controls how much damage it deals, leading to a snowballing defeat very easily.
Secondly, there are some weird difficulty spikes. It isn't as absurd as in some games, but it still is jarring. The first few battles have you fighting against a same size force of thugs where ability usage isn't super critical. Then you are thrust into full on battles where you have to exploit abilities to win with no real guidance on what to do and surprisingly little info on leveling up your characters.
Third, this is a game that seriously needs voice acting. The way the dialogue is structured and how the camera cuts between characters frequently makes it a real pain to figure out who is talking and to who. It doesn't need a full cast, just a good narrator (like you would get in an audiobook).
Lastly, there is a strong gameplay/story segregation.
Spoiler just to be on the safe side :
In the opening mission where you are playing as the giants you get into a fight against the Dredge (evil stone robot things) where you have to save a human price and are fighting with the giant king. The prince 'died' (fell unconscious) in what I assume was a story move since the rest of my units hadn't spawned yet, but excluding that everyone else survived. After the battle, I was treated to a conversation about how the giant king was dead. I was completely confused by that because in my game the giant king wasn't dead and hadn't even taken a single wound. Of course, then the story shifts over to Aragorn-guy and his daughter giving me absolutely no idea what really happened with the giant king and leaving me in the lurch.

Furthermore, you have to make plenty of choices which I like, but there isn't any real indication of what the potential outcomes of the choices are or when they 'come back to bite you' so to speak. I prayed at a shrine and the game said I got some sort of benefit but for the life of me I couldn't tell what it was.

By no means would I call Banner Sage a bad game, just that it has some flaws (mechanical and presentation) that could be fixed easily enough with a Witcher-style 'Enhanced Edition'.

Thanks folks for the input on Banner Saga, guess like it's something I'll probably just wait for a while until it's on sale and has had some improvement.

I'm wondering if there's other games with a similar art style, because until recently I've forgotten how much I used to dig Sleeping Beauty's art style.

It is definitely a 'buy on sale' game. Take that with a grain of salt because out of my rather impressive Steam library I've only bought 5 not on sale.
(XCOM, Morrowind, DAO, Disciples III, X3)

Can't think of any with a similar art style, although if you are in to 2d RPGs you might try Shadowrun Returns (with Dragonfall) when it goes on sale or the Spiderweb Software RPGs.

It may shock you then to know that of all the games in my steam library (excluded ones gifted to me), only 0 of them were not bought on sale. And 0 of them were bought on sale under 50%

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into them. I'm not into 2d RPGs usually, though, but whatever.

Still playing FM2014 and TF2, but also finally got around to starting DE:HR.

Also finished Spec Ops: The Line a while back. That game is a masterpiece.

Just beat FTL and I think I'm done with it for the time being. Fun game, but a bit too luck based for my taste. I'm considering State of Decay, but a voice in my head screams at me to not get any games until I have beate every single one in my steam library first, which would probably take a year or two.

Been playing Eidolon, which has a similar graphic style to Proteus but it also has light survival elements and the land, based on Western Washington, you can walk around in is huge. You'd think just walking is boring but it's actually really fun to explore and forage mushrooms and berries!
