Not those in the film, but the 300 parliamentary ministers of the greek Parliament.

In two days there will be a vote of confidence on the government. Currently its majority has been diminished to just 2 ministers (152 of the 300) and it seems very likely that some of those 152 will vote against it. If just two do then the government will fall.

Personally when this whole charade of a government took power and destroyed things even worse than they already were, i vowed to not pay attention to the news. But what was once appearing to be mere incompetence (or gross incompetence) now starts to be seen as something a lot more dangerous, so i am beginning to pay attention to what is going on.

His moves now not only cause Greece to sink even lower, but affect global markets negatively, along with the price of the Euro. His great idea to call for a referendum is understood locally as the final straw, the stamp of an idiot, if nothing worse. The referendum cannot possibly be won, and now after last nights meeting of the government it has been announced that effectively the question will be "do you want the aid package/to keep the euro or not?
This is unforgivable blackmail. Moreover no one else could force the country out of the euro, apart from its own government, and now he seeks pseudo-legitimacy by posing it as a question in a referendum,

Personally, if i was a minister, i would vote this government down fast, and do anything in my power to secure more negative votes so that it simply goes to hell as it should.

Those 300 are not at all like the ones in antiquity. And their leader is not Leonidas, but a reverse Midas, turning everything he touches into garbage.

I am sorry, but do we need another thread about Greece? I know you want the poll, but there are 3 or 4 active threads concerning the situation, so maybe you should ask there.

Yes i thought about that of course, but as you noted this is centered on a poll, and also on the vote of confidence specifically. Maybe it is ok to have so many currently since they will soon disappear when/if things stabilize.

Somebody really needs to make an image macro of Merkel/Sarkozy going "This is madness!" and Papandreous going "This is Spartaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!".

It seems that the Japanese minister of Economy was quoted on saying that the referendum in Greece is making the whole world extremely nervous.

I still hope the government will fall, Papandreou will cancel his stupid or mandated idea for a referendum, or better yet both will happen.

Let us assume, the government falls and a new election is called. Surely, the weeks and months between friday and the day when a new government starts its work will be weeks of great uncertainty. This is not going to be helping.

Also, is there really any way to put the referendum genie in the bottle again now? How will the Greek people react if a new or even the incumbent government comes along and says "Sorry, we're not going to give you a vote. Suck it up already!?"

This is not the issue, since most people do not want the referendum. The leader of the arch opposition and pretty much everyone else has said they will try anything they can to cancel it.

I would really want to believe that Papandreou is gambling for a better deal, but it seems so out of the question to believe so that i am left with the loonacy or betrayal position. But it is clear that the world (i mean the earth in this context) cannot wait till December for a referendum, it can not wait at all, it must be taken out as a pledge. Lets hope that Merkozy UTD will have something to give and make the pm change his mind.

Really though, let's say this government falls, who will take over? Is there any coherent and competent opposition to clear the mess?

Until I get this answered I will withhold my vote.

The irony is that it was the opposition (or a fair part) who was in charge between the introduction of the euro and the sh*t hitting the fan (if I'm correct).

Personally I think a referendum is about the only honorable thing to do in a situation like this, if the politicians are just going to live in fear of second guessing their constituency. Let the people vote their conscience.
The issue is that serious to the Greek people, I believe.

I personally don't care if the Euro falls because of some uncertainty with how Greece will respond. There's uncertainty in every day of living; that's just life. They can all buy gold for a few days until the votes are in.

If your attitude is representative of that of the greek people, you deserve what you're getting, and on top of that deserve one year more of austerity, and then the inevitable bust. Cowards. As if any government, anyone, can keep the pretend&extend game of borrowing forever. Of even for a few more months. Man up and default already. It's better for you! And do it by referendum, take responsibility and commit to an exit to the crisis for once!

If I were Greek, I'd be cleaning my gun right now.

It's a very democratic thing to do.

I would vote NO to austerity and NO to EU elites ruining the country.
Then I would watch Winner's face as he turns on the TV and watches the Euro crumble and the EU set back 25 years, gleefully :P (In a nice way) :)
