Where is your grammar?

about the double negatives, in many other languages it is acceptable to have them. for instance in italian:

non vedo niente.
I do not see nothing.

(the bottom line is the english one)

in my signature, the "nun vidi nient" bit, is a south italian dialect form of "non vedo niente".

This forum is pretty high on the grammar/intelligibility (I like making words up and I hope you can figure out what that means) scale compared to others. We rarely see people rampantly use "y", "r", "u", "pls", etc. Most people use some sort of punctuation and capitalization. There are more non-native English speakers here than in some places, but that's always a plus. I find that non-native speakers are more likely to be conscious of their writing, and tend not to use obnoxious abbreviations than native speakers. Then again, this may also be because most younger non-native English speaker posters would tend to stay in forums that are in their native language, while older, and usually more mature poster would wander to forums of different languages.

My ranking on annoyance:

(Most annoying) Obnoxious abbreviations - 1337-5P34k and its variations, including eLiTe CaPs - lack of punctuation - all caps - lack of any capitalization - incorrect use of homophones - misspelling (Least Annoying)

I don't have too much of a problem when people have grammar and and spelling errors it only becomes a problem when

1) They use chatspeak. Anyone who uses chatspeak on the internet frequently is stupid

2) The grammar and spelling errors are so terrible it becomes hard to understand what someone is talking about

How funny is it when sometimes, non-native speakers use good English, whilst some native speakers never bother about that.

Hmm.... wrong! . One sentence with lots of mistakes! Ah... then I think, I just pass it here. Too much to learn! As long as people understand, then it`s ok I think. :crazyeye:

Btw, thank you Sidhe. :goodjob:

Grammar and Spelling are two of the keys to the English language, just as engines and a steering rack are to driving!

You can't teach everyone to drive perfectly, but it is drilled into us that 'everyone else on the road is a moron'.

Apply this to your distain for Bad English and the World will be a better place. :goodjob:

There are posters who consistently produce hard-to-read posts, some refuse to modify their writing when requested. I tend to not read those user's posts and likely miss their insight, but the same time could be spent reading properly written posts anyway

I didn't read the thread, so forgive me if this is being repeated, but...

Civfanatics has a pretty high standard of grammar compared to most gaming sites. Especially the OT forum.

Go read a WOW forum or something. It's pathetic.

I don't generally mind it too much, except when it gets to the point where the meaning and understanding of the words are lost (I get very annoyed when people write entire paragraphs with no punctuation so you have no idea what they're talking about), which does unfortunately happen quite a lot in some places.

EDIT:

incorrect use of homophones
What are homophones?

People who hate grammar. Oh wait, that's something else . . .

Two words that sound the same but are spelled differently, like "deer" and "dear".

I make mistakes because english is not my first language.

but I do try to keep them to a minimum.

As a non-native English speaker, I value grammar and spelling quite high. Minor mistake is okay, e.g. type "Enligsh" instead of 'English". But don't make annoying abbreviation (sp?) and foolish words such as "l33t".

Since the advent of the internet I have become fully fluent in typonese. Being naturally a slow typist and over all poor speller, I am not one to nik-pik. As long as I can read what is written, I'm good. However, as mentioned before that "leet speak" (didn't know it was called that) is very annoying and I glaze over those post, they're as annoying as vanity plates.

I am fluent in Southern, English and Typonese. I can survive in a couple of others, but just barely.

EDIT: When I see that leet speak, I perhaps wrongly assume they're about 12 or 13 years old.

I'm also very upset when I see French people writing French without any respect for grammar or spelling, using a lot of SMS garbage language.
It really hurts they eye to read such gibberish.
Some think it is not important at all. However, I can guarantee that when I receive a letter from someone requesting a job in my company, and it's full of mistakes, the letter goes directly into my trash bin, even if the resume could be could.
But this is for French native speakers.
Don't forget here we have a international fora. I think you should be glad that we all made efforts to communicate in English to the best of our capabilities. We try to avoid spelling and grammar mistakes, but it's not our main language!

If a native English speaker is offended by my mistakes, then I suggest he tries to communicate with me in French, and we'll see how many errors he does!

Personally, I think the average level of grammar is quite good on CFC. We all make mistakes, but most here seem to take reasonable care to make themselves understood.

What I don't like, personally, are deliberate misspellings (chatspeak, leetspeak, etc), there's just no point to it other than make your posts harder to read.

It's a lot worse on a german board I ferquently visit. I just don't see a point in exchanging ever f with ph (darf -> darph) or replacing the german prefix ge- with gay-, but it's done almost as a rule there...

i am surprised that no non native english speakers haven't rebelled and started making threads in their native langauges.

Excuse me for sounding snooty, but it irritates me to no end when I look at a thread, or a sentence, and I find that someone, who is an otherwise intelligent person, types paragraphs that are filled with grammatical errors, spelling typos, and/or uncapitalized letters.

Why can't people learn to make fully punctuated, and grammatically correct sentences? This applies to all age groups, inside and out of the CFC. I see improper grammar in a great deal of places, place where spelling and grammar are key to the interpretation of the paragraph. Even books for God's sake!

What do you think? What can we do to stop this menace from consuming us all? Or do you feel that improper spelling and grammar is not rampant? I would like your honest opinions.

i am to lazy to type in correct grammar, plus ive been on RICE to long
