Dark Intelligence by Neal Asher. Grand scale space opera. This is the first book of three. It was excellent and I pick up the second volume tomorrow.
Winter King by Thomas Penn. it is about Henry VII. It turned out to be far more interesting that I thought it would. Lots of new incites into how he ran England for his personal profit.

You wouldn't believe how many people still believe any of the Tudor dynasty were competent, selfless monarchs. Especially in England's #1 colony.

You mean Good Queen Bess didn't have a master plan to lead the world into a liberal democracy, imparted to her by Henry VIII firmly establishing the separation of church and state?

Henry VII was relatively competent, He at least knew how to look after money.

For a second I misread that as Henry VIII. Henry VII was far less incompetent than his successors.
He did lose Brittany, but why should one care, as the English kingdom hasn't been invaded since 1066?

I'm reading the new Ahsoka novel. :) Or rather, listening to the audiobook. Voiced by the voice actor for the character? Count me in.

I've reread Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett. First appearance of Esmerelda Weatherwax!

According the "the Winter King" Henry VII Was totally obsessed with two things: blackmailing and threatening anyone with money to get their money and making sure that Arthur then Henry succeeded him. His secret service operations stretched across Europe and he would go to any lengths to meet his financial and political goals. He makes the Wall Street M&A frenzy of the 1980s look like kindergarden. Basically, he (and his henchmen) bypassed the law and just told the rich to pay him or spend their future in the Tower. In any case, it is a great read.

It's kind of funny how thoroughly the perspective of the English aristocracy apparently dominates the historiography of the Tudors. At least they tried to protect the peasants from Enclosure.

I can quite understand the obsession with an heir. England had just gone through the War of the Roses after all.

A few minutes ago, I finished His Final Battle, a recounting of FDR's last months of life. It addressed many questions, such as his mental condition at Yalta. Further it "make you think" about your own mortality.

Amid a number of comic books, I am reading Roadside Magic by the undoubtedly pseudonymous Lilith Saintcrow. it is a cheesy piece of genre fiction.

Up next, I am going to reread Dune.

I looked this up and it seems you might have to read a book or two by Asher which take place in the same universe but which aren't part of this series, before you read this book. What do you think? My reading list is full right now but I'm always looking for some good sci-fi to add to my list for later reading.

I didn't and the story was great. If I go back now and read earlier books I don't think it will be a problem either. I'll let you know how War factory turns out.

Try the Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu or Blindsight by Peter Watts. Seveneves by Neal Stephenson if you can stomach over-detailed description of orbital mechanics and vehicular maneuvers within.

Recently started West of the Revolution, covering happenings in Russia and Spain's north american colonies in the 1770s.

Just read The Art of War bu Sun Tzu. An good read but I no longer remember anything of what was in it. Just that it was a bunch of cool war stuff. Meh, what are you gonna do?
