Which of these ten sexual abnormalitys are mental disorders? I say none of them, I think sexual abnormalitys should not be considered a mental disoder as a rule of thumb.

Are you differing between "mental disorder" and "mental deviation"?

What's the medical definition of "mental disorder" these days?

Hard to guess, it does depend on how the psychiatric profession in a country regards each "disorder", that said most Western countries don't consider Homosexuality, bisexuality or heterosexuality a mental disorder, but it's far from a given.

Homosexuality from the AMA. Let's face it it's going to disolve into homosexuality at some point. :)

Official Statement Concerning Homosexuality from the American Medical Association

In an excerpt from their Policy on the Health Care Needs of the Homosexual Population (H-160.991), the American Medical Association states:

Our AMA: (1) believes that the physician's nonjudgmental recognition of sexual orientation and behavior enhances the ability to render optimal patient care in health as well as in illness... With the help of the gay and lesbian community and through a cooperative effort between physician and the homosexual patient effective progress can be made in treating the medical needs of this particular segment of the population; (2) is committed to taking a leadership role in: (a) educating physicians on the current state of research in and knowledge of homosexuality and the need to take an adequate sexual history; these efforts should start in medical school, but must also be a part of continuing medical education; (b) educating physicians to recognize the physical and psychological needs of their homosexual patients; (c) encouraging the development of educational programs for homosexuals to acquaint them with the diseases for which they are at risk; (d) encouraging physicians to seek out local or national experts in the health care needs of gay men and lesbians so that all physicians will achieve a better understanding of the medical needs of this population; and (e) working with the gay and lesbian community to offer physicians the opportunity to better understand the medical needs of homosexual and bisexual patients; and (3) opposes, the use of "reparative" or "conversion" therapy that is based upon the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental disorder or based upon the a priori assumption that the patient should change his/her homosexual orientation.

It's hard for me to think any of them truly are "mental disorders" since what determines a mental disorder is socially defined. Long ago, pederasty was considered ok, but today it's considered horrible. Pederasty continues today as part of some culture in New Guinea. Pitcairn Islanders also practiced pederasty until recently.

I'll get back to you when the dust has settled...

A couple of them I would consider mental disorders. Others are weird fetishes that gross me the hell out, but not a disorder.

I don't think any of these are mental disorders. They can be immoral and/or unlawful and/or abnormal depending on the time and place, but they're not mental disorder.

My beliefs are that are all mental disorders in the sense of "not what is supposed to be."

Not that recently a few Islanders are being held to trial for molesting a young girl, I'll see if I can find the link. Mental disorder is too hard to determine, psychologically. But some of them are immoral.

DISPLAYING ABSTRACT - Op-Ed article by Dea Birkett says half the men of Pitcairn Island, population 47, have been found guilty of horrific string of sexual offenses against minors stretching back more than 40 years; says this proves that, contrary to popular opinion, isolated communities are neither happier nor healthier places to raise children; says free from moderating gaze of outsiders and rule of impartial law, abuse can and did continue unchecked for many years

Excerpt I'm afraid.

Why on Earth do people consider "asexuality" to be a mental disorder? I'm honestly curious to know why not having sexual attraction to anything is somehow something wrong...

I'm counting on the large proportion of people picking that option being a mistake (it was in my case anyway ;) ).

A wise outlook, most modern cultures don't, indeed but asexuality? I mean cmon, it's just the other end of the scale of sexuality. And it's becoming recognised as a genuine prefference, albeit for no sex.

Somehow I agree to that. And I'll leave it at that. I dont want to get myself into any more hot water :sheep:.

You agree that it's a disorder? I'm not going to attack you for it, but I'm really quite curious as to why it would even qualify as a disorder...

Yeah, knowing you that's probably for the best.

Anyway, according to the poll it seems a lot of people think I'm mentally disoderd. :mischief: Not gonna say anymore than that!
