While We Wait: The Next Generation

Methinks you have not seen me being vicious (and I have never seen Chandra be vicious).

No, I happen to enjoy NESes at the extremes, too, because your system is broken. I'm sorry. I realize you worked hard on it and blah blah blah and you tried to make it reflect reality, but truth is that I simply do not fit and will not fit into your system. Maybe I'm an outlier. Maybe I'm one out of a forum. But I can enjoy any kind of NES, and will continue to do so no matter what you do with your little classification scheme. kthxbai
This is not outside the scope of the theory. Any given NESer has a preferred point on the axes, and a tolerance for deviations from that point. Symphony D. is a Simulationist with a small tolerance for other styles. I am a Simulationist-Boardgamer with a fairly large tolerance for other styles. You, apparently, are a Centrist with a very large tolerance for other styles. Sorry, but you're not that special.

What I'm getting at is that the divide between Abaddon and Symphony's preferences should not be reinforced by a silly classification scheme that will discourage/encourage the usage of certain elements in their rules or their moderating styles. "Oh, that's trending towards simulationism," or "Oh no, you're running an arcader NES." NESes should be judged on their own merits, on a case by case basis, not on what "school" they inherit.

I'll be damned if I let myself be pigeonholed by the politicization of NESing. You can classify away -- you'll just lose all my respect (for whatever that's worth), and my attention (probably even less important).
You're reminding me of hardline global warming deniers who reject all of the science involved simply because gaping rear ends like Al Gore will inevitably use it to further their political agendas. Don't reject a consistent, predictive model just because you dislike the way that some people will use it. The fact is that the classification works. If you have a problem with people politicizing it, take it up with them.

Can we quit discussing myself and Symph in the same sentance!

To be blunt, North King, I agree with Chandra on the account of the use of the NESing caterogizer; I consider it useful. Also if it... well, ties up NESes into cold categories (Typical of number-oriented Simulationists to attemp to simply divide such a loose definition as NESing into those categorized extreme boxes :p). I just consider it useful for the sake of interest.

Actually, the categorizer appeal to many non-NESing games in general, which is interesting.

And on a completely unrelated note, how do you join http://never-ending-stories.tk/ with this error:

Why exactly is it useful? Chandra, your comparison is ridiculous; people who try to raise awareness about global warming are at least doing something useful, global warming being a threat to human prosperity.* Your classifications? Not so useful. You counter that it's your own time you're wasting, well and good. But you're giving people ammunition for inevitable politicization, whether you like it or not. Since you're not providing a positive service, and fueling the negatives, I do consider your work harmful.

* I will ignore anyone who tries to start a debate about this.

I think that the best strategy is to make a good game and mod it well and not worry too much about how to file it. :)

How many Simulationists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

No one knows, they haven't finished the rules yet. :D

Awesome.

I'm not sure if I've ever stated my opinion on the classifications. I think they are an intresting thought experiment, and might prove usefull in providing a certain format to discuss some ideas. Unfortunatly there has been too much emphasis on talking about what we want out games to be and I've noticed that there have been less NES's that actually just start up without an inordinate amount of Pre-NES threads and posts. We're going to turn into a forum that has used to play a game into one that talks about playing a game .

Not for lack of trying...we are just in a weird phase, with a lot of longtime NESers swamped with classwork unexperienced in highschool years.

At least, that's my preliminary diagnosis :)

I know this doesn't really have much to do with WWW, but is there a reason I can’t see Abaddon’s avatar? And Daftpanzer’s one fluctuates… Its shows up and when I got to the next page, its not there.

With the new size he changed it.

Iggy's NESing Graph: Fun versus Complexity

1. Painfully Bad. What the heck is a 'cravlary' and how did 2 it conquer my country in 1 year?
2. Crazy Fun! Penguin Spaceships attacked the Vegetable Overlords on the Moon!
3. The ZPNES threshold: the point at which a NES ceases to be irritatingly unfeasible, and becomes legendarily awesome.
4. An Average NES: Not too realistic, but very fun nonetheless.
5. The Complexity Plateau: The region where, after reaching a certain point of realism, further increases do not significantly improve the fun output, or the increases in fun are counterbalanced by exceedingly elabourate rules and necessarily strict moderation.
6. Horrifying Realization: The point at which you realise that it would have been more satisfying and less time-consuming to do it in real life. ;)

EDIT: Clarification- Point 3 refers to a vertical line traveling through the point- it is the turning point where things to the right become more fun and realistic, and things to the left become more unrealistic and awesome- ZPNES being an example of the awesomeness.
