While We Wait: Writer's Block & Other Lame Excuses

I swooned when he told me about the customizeable religion and governments.
First item on the agenda during my initial run-through was to make Sophism. :D

Then Napoleon nuked my capital with a religion bomb and I couldn't spread it anywhere for centuries :(

Thankyou, Terrance :)

I am frankly astounded by the support for Civ5 in here. I admit to hardly playing it, however that is because everything I've seen and read paints a picture of dreadful AI that cannot pose a challenge except with massive advantages, and frankly broken game mechanics (diplomacy is a joke, massive city spam and forgetting city improvements is the way forward?). Very fake/gamey/flashy experience?

Hexes, updated graphics, and a few cool new ideas thrown in do not make up for that, surely?

I keep reading of people trying Civ5 for a while, getting sick of it and going back to Civ4.

Please explain it to me guys.

I know that Civ4 has achieved balanced gameplay, the possibility to play on large worlds with many civilizations at once, much more meaningful diplomatic options, much better AI (especially with mods), corporations and religions. Mods also add things like liberation movements and revolutions. I have played this and it is excellent. It can create a really immersive world that I really enjoy, it rivals Europa Universalis experiences. Someone will probably mod-in the customisable religions dynamic too.

Civ4 wins!

Civ5 before patches, when most of those articles were written, was dreadfully unplayable. But a lot of it was made tolerable before the expansion which makes it a solid and well-rounded game.

My problem with Civ5 comes mainly from the lack of big mods. I can hardly play Civ4 either without Revolutions, FFH, Rise of Mankind, etc. That, and my main strategies are ruined. Beyond that, though, it's not a bad game at all, and does address a lot of problems with Civ4 (*cough* stack of doom *cough*). If you have the game, I'd advise giving it another shot.

Which mod is this?

To be fair, if you've ever played Civ4 multiplayer, the SoD had very little relevance there - you need to spread out your forces properly to archieve a superior position and disallow enemy troops from crossing your borders and destroying your position from the inside. Bots rarely raze vital cities. Players do. The problem with Civ4 isn't actually the mechanics - very few problems there, really - it's that the AI isn't good enough to handle the combat mechanics and therefore only attacks in stacks.

I've heard the AI is worse in CiV tho, what gives.

Revolutions, if I'm not mistaken.

I've barley played Civ4 multiplayer, and that was mostly showing the game to friends who had never played it before. I'd still argue that the tactical aspect of Civ4 leaves something to be desired, even if only from the AI.

How do you expect me to fight wars without my 150 catapult / 4 spearman / 4 horseman stack at the dawn of the Middle Age?

It gets old after you've broken the display by going over 10,000,000.00 income.

I do ought to take this overflow to DotA 2 public matchmaking though, you're right. I think I'll pretend to be Russian. Need to get some Cyrillic on copy-paste.

~Darkening~! I'm a bit out of touch around here, but haven't you been gone for a long time?

Nawh; I'm "active" in N3S, to the extent one considers it to be active. I'm usually here for a bit every couple of days to keep an eye out for the case that NK updates.
