What am I looking at?

Heard of Dwarf Fortress before, how much fun is it to play the game, if I may ask?

It's supposed to be rather good, if you can get over the poor graphics, annoying interface, and learning cliff. Personally I've never got into it, but it can apparently be rather addicting, and some of the AARs are quite impressive.

Poor graphics? Pfft, get over yourselves. Annoying interface? Nah, it used to be total garbage but it has been improved drastically from when the game launched. Learning the game on the otherhand is one of the most difficult things about it. I am still learning the game six years in.

I've played and enjoyed plenty of games with low quality graphics. DF unmodded, however, has a learning curve just to figure out what's what. Case in point:

Admittedly it's not so bad with the tile sets, but it sure ain't pretty.

I've mostly been put off Dwarf Fortress by what looks like an insane learning curve. I just wouldn't know where to start.

On the other hand, Liberal Crime Squad looks fun and i'm thinking of picking it up.

Being put off by challenge is why you're in the 99%.

DF Proper doesn't have graphics. Hence, they can't be poor. :p

The unmodded graphics are fine.

I will admit, it does look like a computer had a minor seizure, but it looks interesting enough; did some reading on it and it sounds like the strategy of Dwarf's Fortress is quite interesting to say the least as you have no set victory condition. Though, may I ask what these tile sets are?

Additionally, it seems to be that there is a healthy amount of interest for it here at CFC?

The DF wiki, which is essential for your survival anyways, has a nice list here. They're basically graphical overhauls of the game. Although the engine has its limits, it's much easier to understand what's going on.

I'd also recommend the Lazy Newb pack, which gets you set up with the basic tools, and has an easy way to switch between popular tilesets. Luckymoose's screenshot, for example, uses one of these tools that makes management ten times easier.

I played for years without graphical tilesets or utilities. And back then it was a complete pain in the ass. Imagine a game where building a wall required five keystrokes for every single tile of wall.

Sounds painfully tedious at points, but I assume that's part of the challenge; I believe there is a multiplayer component or somesuch incorporated into DF? Might be mistaken or have gotten different things mixed up, but I think that may be the case.
