While We Wait: Writer's Block & Other Lame Excuses

I think that having review for NESes is a good idea if we keep it positive. With 75/100 as the benchmark NES, how would you consider what is a NES at right now? We would need of course to have a rubric with a bit of twist for personal consideration. In addition, such reviews would also give tips for the mod and for players, especially new ones; which would be beneficial.

Perhaps instead of giving each NES a grade just say something like "if you enjoy sci-fiction check this one out" or "for those who like lots of complexity and depth...", etc. Maybe a list of pros and cons at most.

Brings back memories of 2008.

I still irrationally blame myself for that not getting off the ground.

Granted I'm not the most veteran member of this community, but I think having reviews for stories is a particularly bad idea (especially "grade" reviews).
Numerical reviews are bad ideas because not everyone is judging off of the same rubric. Descriptive reviews, such as those suggested by Frozen, are far superior, and actually provide usable information. I don't know anything by hearing that a NES has an 88% rating, but I do hear a lot from learning that it's a fast-paced fresh start with fantasy elements, or something like that.

That makes a lot more sense to me. Though in my original post, I was referring to individual stories themselves, and not actual NESes (though I do believe that numerical reviews are a bad idea in both instances). The only reason I bring it up is that the example posted contains numerical reviews of stories.

Pro/Con reviews is much better than any numerical review, especially if after the Pro/Con they summarize stuff the NES offers and then link to the Mod's Profile page and the NES in question.

Pro/Con is objectively better than any attempt to be "numerical" about it. Much better to foster a sort of spotlight sense of "what's hot this week in NESing" than engender the kind of tribal politics that helps nobody.

I would also suggest that instead of just looking at current NESes, that some of us investigate recently dead NESes and note anything that can be learned from that experience, and others to dredge deep into NESing history to report on NESes that are good reads.

Don't good NESes already put that kind of information in the OP?

Ah yes, but Moderators tend to either pump their reputations, or hide it. 3rd party reviews connect the whole community.

Sometimes I feel tempted to look at the previous Absolution games, but I have to be honest I'm too scared to do it. It's like I was trying to deflate my reputation just by naming it that.

It would be an awesome thread to get some good "too metagamey" blurbs though.

Which has nothing to do with why I oppose numerical ratings. I oppose those on principle, not because I would get tons of points deducted for things like "has a tech tree" or "makes you pick a trait for your faction."

But, all sarcasm aside I do find the idea of such a thread to be compelling.

I think the point is that this allows for some discussion and comparison by third parties, rather than by the moderators themselves.

#nes serves as an excellent crowdsource for NESing reviews, updated in real time!

:3

#nes represents only a small portion of the community, and can't really pose as a representative subset of our community, as much as I would like it too.
