why people weren't upset that Saddam was beating the crap out ...

Why were not upset? Many were. For example, Mr.Bush. But Mr.Bush has chosen wrong medicine. The chosen warmonger medicine killed the patient rather than treated him. Even if you forget about opium plantations in Afghan, amount of brutalities in Iraq and Afghan has been increased since 2001 not reduced.

If USA troops leave these countries alone, there will be just a great slaugther and a civil war. Did you want it when the great democratic transformation was started back in 2002?

Don't forget, one smart man said - the road to hell is paved with good intentions. This is exactly that case.

Finally. I don't know where all those "Poland" votes came from, but I'm sure the poll was rigged. Nonetheless, the pole has finally come around to accept reason and logic.

USA #1 USA #1

Take a look in the Civ4 BTS forum.... :yeah: Just to get an idea of Polish nationalism.

Haha, just kidding. Here's a stadium one: http://youtube.com/watch?v=2MuLBYYvRp8

That's weak; you can pretty much only hear the lady with the microphone singing. In the video I posted, she's (he??) drowned out by 40,000 crazy, singing Pollacks.

The anthem sung at the Oilers game will still be a piece of awesome for a long time.

Nice :goodjob:

Not as crazy as the Polish one though, I'd have to say, but that's probably due to the 2x number of fans singing AND the amplificatory (?) nature of the stadium.

You just don't get what you're seeing. You're witnessing the thundering silence of our awesome respect and reverence we have for our flag and, by extension, our nation. Most of us are so awe-struck by the sight of our beloved flag that we're moved to silence.

That's normal. Americans are taught since childhood to be silent during the singing of the national anthem. The odd thing I see in that video is all the cheering and whistling.

Besides, most Americans don't know the words.

during the anthem you are SUPPOSED to stand in silence. However, in certain instances, like when americans who support a team with EIGHT non-canadians, by booing O Canada, by singing loudly when you come home.

On the whole my experience with forums (going back to my lil 56k in 97) says that the most homogeneously nationalist sorts are Poles and Turks... you know, you see Americans, Brits, Germans, Chinese (more notably Hong Kongese than mainlanders), etc... bemoaning the state they live in all the time...

Course there are ferocious nationalists from all these places, but you see people from the same place who're aware the sun doesn't shine out of their collective... but when you see a Pole or a Turk whinging about Poland or Turkey, then I at least feel that breath of fresh air coz it don't happen that often!

I think people from the Balkans are the most nationalistic in forums, althrough not much in numbers.

Well, one American diplomat has told us during one lecture that Eastern Europeans (in the Cold War sense) in general are often considered to be "crazy" in the US. Like they're loud, they often react unpredictably etc. He said that Czechs are something like an exception, since they're usually calm and avoid drawing attention to themselves

Well, I don't know if this guy was aware, but it's generally accepted- outside of the US- that Americans are the loudest people on the planet... :mischief:

I've heard so many legends about Eastern Europeans (in the cold war sense) that nothing surprises me any more. :p

In Hungary, lots of people were convinced we write with Cyrilic characters and our language is almost a dialect of Russian. In Italy, some people were surprised I actually live in a bloc of flats as they knew we live in tents. A group of French tourists was surprised to find electricity and public transport in Romania (the irony being that we have the 4th biggest public transport in Europe, here in Bucharest, and the majority of the vehicles are imported from France ). While when I was at a contest in Italy, some Spanish guys there were surprised we are 6 Romanians and none of us is drunk, as they heard we are always drunk...

So that doesn't surprise me at all. We're the scapegoat of Europe, but at least we have a good laugh from it. ;)
