For those unaware, this was an ATF (the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) operation in which gun shops in the US were encouraged to sell weapons intended to go to mexican drug traffickers…..

The idea was that once the weapons in Mexico were traced back to the straw purchasers, the entire arms smuggling network could be brought down. Instead, the report argues, letting the weapons slip into the wrong hands was a deadly miscalculation that resulted in preventable deaths, including that of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

more info HERE

Both Holder and Obama are denying any knowledge of the operation. So who will take the fall?

This issue could cast a dark cloud on our president’s “renewed” focus on immigration law reform…..

Will it?.....will some stooge take the fall and the whole thing quickly forgotten?

So, does the report argue that without the ATF, there would have been no other guns for Mexican drug gangs to buy?

I'm interested in who is going to take the fall for letting the interns name the operations.
I was thinking the intern's 8 year old son.

I heard "Operation T-Rex" and "Operation Power Rangers" were two of the rejected entries.

I doubt anyone would argue that they don't just go to gun shows and dealers. Or even by Warsaw Pact surplus.

It's more like a Contragate scandal where the government gave weapons to people who shouldn't have been trusted. Especially scandalous when it results in the deaths of citizens, etc..

When did this operation take place?

When/was this supposed to happen?

dont know when it happened, hopfully, not in 2009, when our president blamed US gun shops for the violence in mexico....

EDIT: oh snap!! i just heard sen. issa's statement stating the operation started in 2009!

the ATF stopped tracking the weapons once they traveled too far from the border. He said the ATF lost track of 1500 - 1800 weapons.

Rep. Issa and Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) released a report on “Operation Fast and Furious," which says border patrol and ATF agents were told to "surveil" weapons and not interdict. It also said agents warned of devastating consequences, including criminal activity, but supervisors ignored their warnings.

At a House hearing on the program Wednesday, ATF Agent John Dodson said, "Every time we questioned that order, there was punitive action."

While the original question that was asked to start this post 4 1/2 years is still unanswered, the two men (Jesus Leonel Sanchez-Meza and Ivan Soto-Barraza ) responsible for the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, have been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole.

One of the firearms used to murder Brian Terry was part of the thousands of guns that were allowed to "walk" by the ATF and then subsequently "lost".

So...you necro'd this thread to...

Okay, I give up.

What's your objective?

It took almost 5 years since the murder of Brian Terry for the case to wind its way through the courts.

It's also been roughly 5 years since this Operation Fast and Furious horribly failed and I'm not aware of anyone in the government ever being held responsible or punished for the irresponsible way in which the program was run.

I suppose that I could have started a new thread but since there was already a prior thread for Operation Fast and Furious figured it would be acceptable to just add an entry to it.

Is that against the forum rules or something?

Not at all.

That said, that moment when you see lots of cool posters you remember and think they're back only to find out the thread is a necro.

:(

Not against the rules.

I categorize this as standard right wing behavior. The argument you want to make was lost years ago, but you bring it up again now in hopes that maybe no one will bother dredging up the facts that proved you wrong before. That way you can pretend they don't exist. Revolting.

Happy 5 year anniversary to the failed operation against Operation Fast and Furious. I'm sure many could almost smell and taste impeachment at the time.

Multiple investigations have backed up previous indications that high level appointees had nothing to do with this operation. The July '12 report from Congress placed the blame on five ATF managers who had already resigned. The September '12 DOJ report faulted fourteen additional federal agents. This second report resulted in the resignation both of the acting ATF chief and a Deputy US Attorney.

Both Holder and Obama are denying any knowledge of the operation.

Stated more precisely, a Congressional committee headed by Republican hatchet man Darrel Issa investigated for two years and was unable to come up with an iota of evidence against either Obama or Holder.

In answer to your question of who would take the fall: Firings took place in Dec. 2012, including e.g., William McMahon, ATF Deputy Assistant Director. Gary Grindler, Eric Holder's chief of staff "voluntarily" left the Justice Department at the same time.

This happened three years ago. Try and keep up.
