Why is it fashionable to eschew ketchup on hot dogs?

There are few things people like more than loudly announcing how ketchup on hot dogs is bad (they'll usually use some word like "blasphemy" or whatever). I can't imagine anything that seems to garner such universal self-satisfaction among people as pointing out that they think it is wrong to put ketchup on hot dogs.

Anyway, I don't care. I like ketchup on my hot dogs. It's the only thing I put on actually. Mustard or any other topping isn't to my liking. And it should be a real hot dog bun, not lefse or any other bun-like thing (Rye bread is permissible if I lack real hot dog buns.)

Oh, and I like ketchup on my hamburgers, and on mashed potatoes, and fries, and komler, and pizza, and a few other things.

If people don't think it's fashionable, it's just because they're less refined elitists than I am.

That's because people are getting more pretentious concerning food, and using ketchup is not very pretentious.

Reminds me of a brilliant comic strip by Al Taliaferro(I think) featuring Donald Duck on a fancy restaurant. He orders a steak and is VERY specific as to how he want it, in the end even the chef comes out to greet this sophisticated customer. The punchline is that in the end when he gets the steak he also asks for a bottle of ketchup, and when he gets it he dunks the entire steak in ketchup to the dismay of the chef and the waiter. Brilliant.

Ketchup on komle? That is unusual. I mean, brown cheese, syrup, sugar, all perfercly normal, but ketchup?

Ketchup is useful for disguising the flavor of foods...its why little kids try to put it on everything. Eschewing ketchup allows you to be more creative in your condiment choices.

It is also a source of regional pride, as the Chicago and the Cincinnati hot dogs ban ketchup. Its another way of saying I'M FROM THE MIDWEST! WOOO!!

Ketchup's sugary flavor just smothers all the other flavors. Just put regular tomato slices on your hot dog.
People are free to enjoy hot dogs however they want. Even if it means they put on ketchup, or mayonnaise, or hair, or nail clippings, or whatever crazy ingredient they like.

Maybe Chicagoans just have dulled palates, because I find that I can taste the nuances of the hot dog just fine with ketchup.

WHY?

Ketchup on hot dogs was a staple food of my childhood! Nowadays I'm not too fond of ketchup, though. Or hot dogs, for that matter. I generally eat bratwurst or Italian or Polish sausage on a hot dog bun, thus I prefer mustard and/or relish over ketchup.

Ketchup or no ketchup, hot dogs are good either way. I like ketchup and mustard because it sinks into the bread when you bite into it, making it softer and tastier. It's less for the dog than the bread to me.
