It's not like you're punching your kid in the face. It's a simple slap on the butt to show you mean business. I don't know about European kids, but American kids don't generally find time outs to be punishment. Especially if you're just sending them to their room.

It's a hypothetical--I don't have kids, just experience watching other peoples' kids. The alternative is time-outs, but also advance training. I.e. if you train the dog to do right before it starts doing wrong, and reward it for doing right, and correct it doing wrong immediately by your influence/mind tricks, you might avoid an out of control situation that requires corporal punishment.
