Update Year 200 (1200 BCE): Enter the Warriors Bold
Trebizond
Trebizond finds itself in the middle of an expansionism boom somewhat, and though nothing as great as what the Hitties neighbors to the west are doing, but is still significant; calming much land to the south and east, the Trebizond come in contact with the fabled mountain peoples that their legends in the east of their land have long told about; the Armenians.
The Armenians, currently, are an organized people, barbarians in that respect, dont know what to make of the Trebizond nation, and look wearily upon them. With smooth diplomacy however, perhaps Trebizond could convince some to join them; though one false move may bring raiding parties down upon Trebizond lands
[While the legends persist, many myths are dispelled by what is found in the mountains of Armenia: +1 education]
Cimmaria
Galloping accross the plains of the Scythian plains, the Cimmerians expand greatly, stopping only when they meet a great river, across from whom obvious signs of the land being claimed arise. Mostly, large signs positioned in obvious, and some less then obvious places that say this land is claimed Disheartened, the formerly charging horse comes to an abrupt stop right before hitting these signs, and turns back, down trodden, tail between legs.
[Cimmeria is known for its charging hordes of horsemen, of course, not begin to war, they arent none for charging into battle, more like just general charging, and otherwise looking important. Always the sharp steppe dressers, the culture of Cimmeria has grown as its reputation spreads, and dazzling sense of fashion grows: +1 culture]
Sparta
Much to everyones surprise, the Spartans are on the war path! Attacking the Thebans, the Spartans are able to blitz the city state, and take it by storm, and in an orgy of destruction, reduced the city by flames to less then half of what it once was. However, the Theabns were hardly to be put down so easily; fleeing from the flames engulfing the palace, the last of the Theaban nobility, along with his family, and remnant of the city guard journey north, into the wilds of Macedon; through a combination of good diplomacy, cunning tricks, and just brute force, he manages to cement together a small kingdom (though larger then either of the two Greek city states that marched on Thebes, the Athenians and Spartans) The resultant kingdom is stronger then th epreviosu Thebes, and has a dangerous and gorwing cavalry corps that shoudl be worried about; located right next to an Athneian possesion in Macedonia, its very likelly the kingdom will seek revenge.
[The sack of Thebes brings great infamy to the Spartans soldires, as word of thier horrific deeds spreads across the Aegean sea: +1 culture- Athens, Minoa, The Thracian and Illyrian tribes, Macedonians (both the tribes and the kingdom) are all now preparing for a Spartan attack)]
[The war results in heavy casulties for both sides, because of the nature of the fighting: - 227 spearmen, -163 Archers]
Rome
Rome takes advantage of the Illyrian prejudices (though they seem to be dyeing down a bit) an expands with great strides into the Northern reaches of Illyria, south of the Danube, where the main Illyrian borders lands with the Celts are located, the tribes and chiefdoms easily flock to the banner of the Italiots, whom are brothers, and under the banner fo Roman protection, contribute warriors to the cause. Illyrian tribes farther south however are rather lukewarm about the marching of Roman feet, and are courteous, but its clear if they are to join Rome, they will need more convincing then the northern tribes have so far needed, and its likely the most southern wont be overly impressed- or very pleased at the prospect of Romans marching all over- at all.
[Illyrian tribes fo the north have flocked to Romes banners, and eagerly fight for the cause: +100 spearmen]
Euskara
The Euskarans finally seem to be turning away from their formerly isolationist ways, and begin a vigorous expansion into other areas of Spain; while a friendly competition, particularly with the heavy metal, and finished goods trade between Tartessos and Euskara, the Tartessians step up thier own expansionist policy as well both encounter a great deal of success, The Euskarans edging out the Tartessians in the race for Leon and Asterias by a long shot, but the Tartessians getting ahead in claiming coastal territories; most Euskarans have little trouble with this, has Tartessian and Euskaran dissenters have left for a pirate based established in the Balearic isles, centered on Majorca, the Balearic Buccaneers are sidelining for now, as there is little coastal trade, but may one day be a force to be reckoned with. Loseing out in the race for the Med sea coast, the Euskarans simply claim more of the Atlantic coastline.
However, major events are beginning to unfold with far greater repercussions then a simple backwater being established as a heaven for sin and pleasure; the rampant expansion by Euskara and Tartessos has forced many Iberian tribes who did not wish to submit into migration, particularly north, into Gaul; normally, this would not be a problem, the Celtic and Iberian tribes generally, though what little contact they had, got along well, their cultures similar, and nobility of Iberian origin could be found in the Celtic south, and of Celtic origin in the Iberian north; however, worship of peculiar sun god, originally introduced by the Euskarans, many attributed his power to a far older, and mysterious deity-Oraclus, a one eyed titan whom was lord of the sun; the cult has spread like a wild fire through the Iberian tribes; however, the Celts, bolstered by the nations arising from their own culture, did not perceive this deity well- the result, fanatical Iberians and less then enthusiastic celts, whom are feeling the pinch of encroaching Iberian hordes has led to the deity being an excuse for violence, and all along the very ill defined border region of the two cultures, war and massacre are taking place; each culture looks to the established nations whom champion their culture for an answer- preferably one that involved smashing their enemies heads in with an axe.
[Large amounts of trade between Euskara and Tartessos have resulted in a road being built, increasing trade, its a huge boon to both economies, the down side is, is that if the economy of one takes a downturn, the others is expected to do as well: +1 economy, but be weary of any economic misfortunes in Tartessos]
[The New religion has resulted in much fame amongst the Iberians, and much infamy among the Celts; the new religion, while not widely accepted by non-Iberians, is still widely known of now, and so are the Euskarans who introduced it: +1 culture]
Hatti
Hatti expands its holdings greatly over the land, the king, inspiring his troops with tales of a great sea to the west and south rush over the land to reach it, and indeed, claim and conquer much in the name of Hatti, establishing a sea based coastline in the north and south, and following the border set by Trebizond for much of the east; in the west however, things do not pay off as well, thier they meet strange new nations, generally looking like a general resemblance in culture to the people fo Treibizond yet slightly... different- the exception being the Minoans, based on the coast line in the west, and controlling the island of Cyprus to the south, whom have a wildly different -and wildly more advanced- culture then their neighbors that fantastically wealthy Lydians, based on Sardis.
The religion of the Minoans fascinates the Hittites, and sheer wealth of Lydia entices their greed; more then a few commander dispatched to the west say that it may be a bloody war, but a war well worth its weight in gold to conquer Lydia...
But in the east, a new threat arises; the Mitanni, emboldened by a lack of force from both Trebizond and Hatti have begun to raid those kingdoms, and it will surely take a war to put these rascals in their place.
[The Hittites feel the need for war arises, and yet more young nobles eagerly flock top the chariot corps to do their part for king, family, and country: +25 UU]
Qin
Saba
The Saban monarchy, heeding the requests of the people, and the advice of their viziers relocates the capital of the kingdom to the coastal town of Musa, putting the monarch in a better position to overseer the creation of incense directly, though many question why the king is emphasizing the creation of the substance -far more the Sabans themselves have use for-, until the first Egyptian explorers arrived by sea.
The Egyptians had recently established ports on the sea of reeds coast, partially because the current Pharaoh, in fact the entire dynasty thus far, had been rampant expansionists, and partially because their had been rumors that large quantities of the material incense could be found to the south, and across the sea, important for religious workings, something deathly important to the Egyptians, the Pharaoh was willing to risk it on the chance that it would be true, and sent an expedition down.
After establishing contact, the Egyptians made some bartering, and continued on a huge expedition down the coast; their eventually goal was to reach the land of Pwenet, and had been gatherings goods and gifts by local rulers to bring back, and show case to their Pharaoh.
[Because the expedition has now charted a trade route, the Egyptians have built expanded port facilities, and there are even new ports along the way to aide travelers by sea, a trade route with Egypt should be fairly easy to establish: Trade route with Egypt only costs 2 economies to establish]
Athens
The Athenians establish a trade route with Sparta, though the Spartan citizens are weary of the godless Athenian heathens goods, but the governments of both lands seem hellbent on forcing the people to co-operate, and for the time, being, there are no other real complaints from either population; however, not everything goes peachy for Athens; no further work on their currently built wonder was done, for the king seemed to have forgotten of its uncompleted status, being so bold as to try to put another wonder on the construction block; reminded by his developers that such a thing would drain the coffers of the city to the point where the nation would collapse, it was decided that it could wait.
However, the major news was the lack of news in the Theban conflict; in conjunction with Sparta, the Athenians launched an attack on Thebes, by sea, yet to Athenians embarrassment, the Thebans simple refused to put out to sea at all, more involved with fighting the Spartans on land, the Thebans saw no point in trying to press their luck at sea; so while their was no Athenian naval victory, the Athenians were free to persuade a Macedonian city, Pella, into joining the Athenian fold, though otherwise, the Cities of Macedon have either opted for neutrality, to to join the new found Kingdom of Macedonia, based around the remnants of the Theban monarchy
[despite the folly of their king, the Athenian citizenry are eager to see their new academy completed, and as such have contributed to the project themselves: +1 turn wonder advancement]
Cumans
The Cumans push far to the west in their search for new lands to expand upon, and push right up against a rather entrenched barbarian peoples, the Thracians; establishing a new city in relatively close proximity to the Thracians, it has ushered a clarion call amongst them, and taking cues from the Greeks and newly established Mcedonians from the south, and the Romans in the west, the Thracians begin to unify around the newly founded kingdom of Dacia
[While the Dacians worry about the Cumans, and begin organizing themselves incase they attack, they do feel they shoud learn of them as well; through Dacia, Cumans are becoming a known of people in the Aegean and beyond: +1 culture]
Aquitane
Aquitane is only to happen to oblige a challenge of prestige issued by several Celtis leaders in the east, a challenge to show them that Aquitane could indeed be the protector they were looking for; while still, by most standards, a disorganized rabble of rather disgruntled middle aged Men who would rather be eating some boar chops after a day of ritual hunting rather then marching around in the back end of nowhere trying to impress estranged relatives(all the good young uns had been sent south to actually fight) they did look damn good doing it, the blue war paint, and Spiked hair really impressing the people of the east celts, and verily, Aquitane now controls all the Celtis up to the Rhinus river; beyond that, things seem to be growing unstable, and reports of Celtic tribes fighting tooth and nail against the Germanic hordes descending from the Northslands is growing. However, those do not compare to the situation in the south
In the south, the Men of Aquitane found it surprisingly easy to conquer an wonderfully imposing hill fort, in fact, they took it with out a single man lost; in fact, it surrendered without a fight. What the warriors of Aquitane found inside the land was broken tribe, old men, children, and women were the sole occupants of what had once been the greatest bastion and fortress of Celtic power in the south east of their territory, until one hit the land of Bavira.
The answer, upon investigation was simple; a huge tribal war, the likes that had never been seen had broken out, and while the first suspects was either some cowardly German trick, or the bastardly tough Illyrians making yet another repetitive war of pride, it was found that the current crisis came not from the north east, or the south east, but from the south west- the Iberians a people who generally got along well with the Celts, had been pushed out of their original lands by two great powers in their homelands, the Tartessians and Euskarans, the migration had put as it was a huge strain on the relationship between the two peoples, as Iberians inhabited what was once proudly Celtic lands; the breaking point however, was when the Iberians began pushing a new cult to a great one eyed sun god, supposedly lord of all he surveyed, which was everything, because hes the sun and all (The last part is suspected to be an embellishment to demonize the Iberians though. The new religion of the One eyes Sun god stands as truth, as later confirmed)
The strained tensions could not last, and when war broke out, it did with a holy fury; the greatest tribes in the region, including this one had sent their armies to meet the dastardly Iberians head on, and it has resulted in an epic clash along huge, and ill defined borderland; each side looks to the perceived champions of their cultures for a violent end to this war.
[Warriors flock to the banner fo Aquitane: +50 horsemen]
Svealand
Driving out the drooling German hordes from the holy land of Schweden, the people of the kingdom of Svealand (different forms of the same name, all said) continue utterly rampaging and driving the Germans out of the area, and the slave trade has truly blossomed for them; the increased contacts have led to many a Norse warrior coming from abroad and joining the Sveads, And when they return home, they bring back tales of adventure, though more importantly, the basic stuff to begin kingdoms; already, several new towns and chiefdoms have popped up, and it looks like their will soon be another kingdom or two in the lands of north.
Capitalizing on their expansion however, the Germans are confined, in the are around Svealand to the very south, and look to be almost completely forced out; across the sea, while in search of fresh fishing areas, Sveadish fishermen have set up small communities on the other side of Baltic, and in doing so, have contacted the Finnish tribes; how their relationship will work out is yet to be seen, but the Finns seem prepared to fight in case Sveadish slavers come for them too.
[The fame of Sveadish slave trade has traveled abroad, and many a warrior has come from distant lands in the lands of the Norse to partake of it: +50 spearmen]
Babylon
The Babylonians move on Elam The Babylonians took the Elamites by storm in a surprise attack that took everyone by surprise. The King had ordered the Royal Archer corps reinforced, and soon made his march on Elam, unprovoked, and the King was soon able to add Master of the Elamites to his already prestigious title of Lord of the Babylonians- His army, while it could be well co-ordinated, moved in several prongs across the plains and fields of the Elamite hinterland, encountering little resistence; the marshal of Elam was still in his bed when he hear dof th eintial invasion, and the forces he was mustering in the name of his king were all centered on Elam, or still making their move to the city, to be dispatched. As such, the Babylonian army took many units just answering the muster, and making their way to the city by surprise, and cut them down unprepared, and on the march.
The Babylonians, in a mere 3 days made their way unto the walls of Susa, a mighty city, well known in the area, and set fourth a year long siege of the city, relying mostly on the bowman corps to the fighting at range, it was in fact the Bowmen whom were the only significant soldiers during the siege, because of the lack of siege weapons; however, the Babylonians, overall, had light casualties, compared to massacred Elamite army, and have captured the Capital city of Sardis. It is debatable weather the Elamite remnants will fight it out, make a deal to join the Babylonians, or flee to the hills, where new kingdoms are said to be now rising.
Whatever the result of what the Elamites do, the Medeans, a newly arisen kingdom to the North, and more notably, the Assyrians and Phoenicians have taken note of the newly founded Babylonian aggression, and beyond the land of Canaan, their dwells another great power, the Egyptians, whom look to Babylon in curiosity, wishing to see if this new great power will be friend or foe.
[Because of the massive surprise, and good performance of the bowman corps, the Babylonians have rather light casualties: -25UU, -100 spearmen]
[The fame of the bowmen corps is great, and in immitation, many a local militian has sprung up, while not nearly as skilled, or well equipped as the prestigious bowmen of Babylon, they are still a valuable reserve: +25 Archers]
