This is the thread to talk about all the new and creative cocktails you are trying out. Last night I made myself a Pina Colada with a Bacardi 151 floater, 'twas very good if not a little strong.

Fan of the ol' Long Island.

Being 1 warning away from a ban due to cocktails I'll shed some light:

1) Long Island. Done right; this baby packs a punch that is worth the pain in the morning.

2) Mai Tai. Just moved from Hawaii, done very well there obviously, probably not so much elsewhere. Fruit punch for adults that you can chug until you see three of everything.

3) Not a cocktail; but straight up Vodka. Neutral, delicious, gets the job done. Chase it with sugary drinks as I do (coke/pepsi) something alone those lines. It tastes like sprite after the first shot.

4) OT: I was recently in Wendover (border town in Nevada), was charged 12 bucks for a long island. Does anyone know if long islands are free in vegas? I am going there in a few weeks and not sure if I should plan on paying for those...

White Russian

Approximately equal parts vodka and coffee liquor (Kahlua, Bailey's, etc.). Remainder milk. How much milk depends on how strong you like it. I like milk, so I tend to go heavy on the milk.

Wikipedia recommends 50% vodka, 20% coffee liquor, 30% fresh cream. But who stocks fresh cream at their own residence? I go with milk instead, and different proportions since half vodka doesn't sound so great to me.

The keeping-things-in-stock is actually the main reason I rarely have cocktails. I tend to not have many of the alcoholic drinks in stock, let alone the more esoteric mixers that will spoil more quickly.

Edit: I did happen to have some fresh pineapple juice around that I didn't know what to do with. So I threw together 3 parts pineapple juice, 2 parts spiced rum, 1 part chocolate liquor. Observations: Not bad, but not great, either. Probably needs more pineapple juice, but I only had about 1.5 oz of pineapple juice left from the pineapple. Might be better with ice than at room temperature.

Other observations: madviking's avatar has changed since I made this post.

Where I live what absolutelly rules now is the classic Gin-Tonic. There is a kind of hipsterism around it. I don't like the gin so I am not in this madness.
If I have to take a cocktail I always ask for a Cuba Libre, I like it with Barceló Rum and lemmon instead of lime.

Another classic in my home town is Kalimotxo Wine+Cola in equal parts. I don't like it (I can not stand laxative drinsk LOL), but it is served in every bar, festival or party

Just grab a handful of those single serving coffee creamer cups when you're out at a restaurant(or buy a box in the store). They won't be fresh cream, but they're actually cream instead of substituting milk. Unless you want a white russian "lite." Which would be understandable. Seeing as you need a couple of those creamers per drink, and if you plan on having 4 or 5 white russians? I mean, drinking a dozen or so servings of cream in a night is going to be good for some surplus calories with your surplus calories.

I like me a nice martini. Made with Hendrick's gin, if possible.

In most of the US, calling that a drink a Cuba Libre would be tatamount to declaring that you are a hipster.

Wait, it's just a rum and coke? <whiffed>

The nearest I ever got to a cocktail was a snakebite.

Awful stuff. Tastes of vomit, which could save time, I suppose. It didn't even have an umbrella in it.

Entertainment 720's snake juice is the only thing to drink when toasting Little Sebastian.

Oftentimes when I am making some sort of coffee based cocktail, whether with whiskey or brandy, I find that subbing in some Milo works really well. It can take the place of sugar in an Irish Coffee, but a really simple favourite is just some 3-1 instant coffee (a bit sweeter that way), cognac, a bit of simple syrup, and Milo, mix it all, and then top it with whipped cream.

Ron Swanson's drink of choice. Nice. His word is impeccable.

Here I would have called it Cubata, probably Barceló-cola, but I used Cuba Libre because I thought that you would have understood me better.

In any case I don't think that calling rum-cola Cuba Libre would identify a Hipster here.
