30th October this year marks a decade since Civ III was released and I have a suggestion for a little competition, similar to the LH/unit/pcx of the month comps. This competition would be the same, except that artists would be able to pick one item for each competition from their complete Civ III back catalogue to vie for the LH/unit/pcx of the decade award.

If we ran with it, we might have to split the pcxs into cities, buildings, terrain, tech icons and other - so a few categories there then! We might also find there's that many unit entries, we need to split that into (for example) ancient/medieval, industrial/modern and fantasy.

I thought it might be a fun event and possibly we'd see some old hands visit the forums - for example, I'm still in touch with CivArmy and I'm sure he'd put one of his LHs up for the LH competition.

Any opinions?

Sounds fun. :)
Last year i suggested something similar, that we had a pcx/lh/unit maker of the decade contest. It was not accepted, mostly because the logic was that if we had one it would have been the only one to exist, since in ten years from now probably none of us would still be making gfx for this game.

However my plan was to use the annual winners in the poll. I understand you suggest that each one picks his favorite work and enters it in the contest. Lets see what others say :)

Pounder hits the nail on it's head. Many excellent creaters aren't here anymore.

I'm down with this... Perhaps some kind of committee to pick units, LH, etc from members who are no longer among us, whether retired or deceased (i.e. Spacer One)......

This is just crazy though... Only one other game I've known (and played) that has had this kind of longevity with modding is DooM... Heck I even still play it from time to time ;)

Of course I also still play Civ III (even though I haven't done/had much time for modding lately).

How about we just give it to Kinboat? His poser tutorial is the best thing that ever happened to Civ 3 modding.

If it happens, there should be categories for mods and scenarios too.

I quite agree. The prospect of a mod contest might even get some nearly-finished-mod makers into higher gear this summer. How about pitting the Unit-of-the-year, PCX-of-the-year, etc. winners against each other? For other potential categories (like best terrain? Best Historic Mod? Best Fantasy unit?), I'd suggest a stickied nomination thread - just one nominee in each category per member. Open it July 30 - Sept 30 (or thereabouts). Someone could tally all of the nominations and put up, say, the top 5-10 nominees in each category for the final contest, which could be held Oct. 1 - 30.

In the meantime, perhaps a 'Category suggestions' thread....

Maybe the only fair way to do this is with nominations only since there are so many who are no longer on this site.

Maybe you should not be able to nominate your own work. But it would be possible to have more than one entry nominated.

I think the limit for the polls is 25 choices per poll. If there are more than 25 nominations then there could be runoffs, or maybe run polls for those that have more than one entry to get them down to one entry for the final poll.

Agreed that there should be more categories.

Could be done similar to the Oscars. People who have done the same kind of work select the short list. Then the community as a whole votes. One possible way to select the committees would be to let anyone who has won an award help select the short list - unit makers nominate unit makers, etc. For categories where there are not monthly polls open nominations to the whole community.

Dividing things up into more categories would get around the poll limit. Categories could be similar to the ones used in the announcements. An additional category to consider is for conversions - which can take a lot of work. Sounds is another.

And how about some "spoof" awards for other kinds of contributors? Like "best OT spam", "most intriguing yet seemingly impossible to make request", "kleverest kludge", "best placeholder performance by a creation intended for other uses", "most unusual unit" etc.

A "lifetime achievement" list would be a good way to honor long-time members, whether still active or not. This list wouldn't have to be competitive, since people could be added by consensus rather than voting against others. It also wouldn't need to be tied to a particular category of contribution.

It might be interesting to have the final polls "secret ballot" with an awards thread after voting closes. Posts with the nominees, and the winner is... (in the spoiler). Maybe even some spiffed up custom art for the awards.

EDIT: Perhaps run parallel polls. One set for artists to submit their own work. One for community nominated entries. Just an idea.

Also - don't limit nominations to previous winners. There have been too many months where superb creations lost by just a few votes.

Yeah, prime examples would be all of Kinboat's creations, all of Smoking Mirror's creations, all of LBPB's creations....

Kinboat's paperdoll!

What about modders who've moved on to civ IV or V, like thamis or Rhye?

Bump.

This sounds like a great idea to me as well. I already have some ideas for unit nominatioins for aaglo and Balou, two of my all time favorite creators. And of course there are probably at least 10 or 15 units from Vuldacon which would probably take the prize as well. :)
