90's Rock is Hipster?

Nirvana certainly was hipster. G n R are mostly 80s, imo, and they were part of the "hair metal" phase.

That said, there were far more hipster 90s bands than Nirvana, particularly smaller bands.

Example of proto-neckbeard band:

Entirely hipster band:

cradle of filth, nirvana, guns n roses, pretty much all of the popular 90s bands were absolutely mediocre slop. getting nostalgic over that is like getting nostalgic over Nickelback in 2030. the 1990s had some absolutely great bands, which are beloved by hipsters, and pretty much unknown by most people indulging in "90s nostalgia".

neutral milk hotel is the worst offender. but there are other godly artists doing great work in the 90s: tortoise, sonic youth, björk, nas, swans, slick rick, massive attack, portishead, the prodigy, the orb, de la soul, cypress hill, a tribe called quest, melvins, coil, eric b. and rakim, beck, aphex twin, autechre, boards of canada, ride, suicidal tendencies, my bloody valentine, u tang, talk talk, stereolab, squarepusher, slint, sleep, freakin pixies, radiohead, pete rock, biggie, neurosis, naked city, moodyman, mobb deep, mogwai, goldie, godspeed you! black emperor, dj shadow, nick cave, boris, black star, big l, bark psychosis, beastie boys,,

but there's more, lesser known ones. the prodigy and sonic youth are pretty much universally known among college campi, but not these: arto lindsay, porter ricks, kool keith, dj screw, the black dog, mayhem, LFO, of montreal, electric wizard, butthole surfers, sun city girls, global communication, plastikman, earth, dj spooky, darkthrone, codeine..

like I can come up with at least 10-20 genres that were pioneered in the 90s, creatively it was a good decade. mind you this is just me listing some of my favorite artists, if I listed all of the 90s artists I cared for list would be thrice as long.

I can't wait until the sub-cultures associated with hip-hop/gangsta-rap, techno-dance, vapid 21st Century pop, and these other annoying music styles can be said to be dead...

techno, in recent decades, has been one of the steadily most creative genres out there, ESPECIALLY compared to other electronic music like "EDM", house, trance, or, god forbid, dubstep and d'n'b. can't really say you've got a point there, maybe you shouldn't expose yourself to crappy pop music? :D

A good chunk of those bands are bleah.

I prefer most if the other Grunge bands over Nirvana but Radiohead, massive attack andB stand out for meh.

90s stuff I still listen to.

Megadeth, Alice in Chains, Faith No More,Rob Zombie.

I'm more or less a single genre Rock and metal.

you can't throw punches like this and then not say which bands you think are bleah. go on, please.

Maybe you shouldn't expose yourself to crappy techno.

I think you must have misread my statement.. I said the exact opposite, that techno has been surprisingly good and creative for the last few decades, not that it has been bad.

Bjork has a lot of very good songs (Human behavior is my favourite) but she is obviously the definition of hipster :)

the evolution of the word hipster, ladies and gentlemen, no one asked, yet here it is!

Bjork has a lot of very good songs (Human behavior is my favourite) but she is obviously the definition of hipster :)

depends on whom you ask and when. 5 years ago "the internet definition of hipster" was a flannel-wearing, beard-growing man who has tattoos, piercings, drinks IPAs and listens to quirky folk indie rock. I think your definition might be kinda skewed, honestly.

what a hipster is, essentially, is someone who claims more authenticity in his preferences than another person. or, in normal vernacular, a hipster is someone who says: "I liked Björk before she became mainstream, before it was cool to like her". his insistence that his fandom is somehow more justified, more "true", more deep and real and authentic than everyone else's. so essentially, hipsterism was about an attitude, about preferences.

of course nowadays hipster has become a common pejorative, which instead refers to some more or less meaningless cultural symbols which habe been associated with the term "hipster" and are then retroactively applied to even things in the past, like you did with Björk. if someone ticks any of these superficial boxes he or she can be declared hipster.

in the early 2010s the term hipster was used so inflationary that it became the go-to slang for youth for "person I do not like". all meaning had essentially vanished, there was nothing of the original essence of the word remaining.

The moment Bjork was mentioned alongside the Scorpions in my 11th grade German textbook in 1997 she stopped being hipster...

first off, I fully agree with this post. you use the word a little different from Kyr, so I want to dive into that, too.

again, here we see the notion that something that is popular, or mainstream, cannot be hipster anymore. but it is not the band, or the music, or the brand that is hipster, it is the fan that was the hipster. some artists are indeed hipsters, some are actually insufferable hipsters, but that's because of their preferences, like freakin steve albino who said, whenever asked about jazz, that it was just a bunch of wank (ironically, much like his music, which is a bunch of enjoyable wank). some members of sonic youth also really like sniffing their own farts.

socrates post shows how people can be hipsters by association: Björks fanbase might at some point be called hipsters, so by association that artist is also hipster. so now it is no longer exclusively the fanbase or the individual person that is a hipster, but all the bands with hipster fans are now also hipster bands (without having a say, or being able to choose their fans, of course. I bet Radiohead hate their fans.)

I can't really believe that someone would be wearing shirts of the non-mainstream hard rock/metal bands, without actually liking the music.
Because most people wouldn't even like the design of the shirts.
So... no, does not make any sense.

in my high school class there was one boy who had a morrissey t-shirt on. I was so happy and went up to him and started talking about The Smiths. he didn't even know who morrissey was "lol I just thought it looked fashionable". well, **** me.

Arguably Bjork is more of a hipster than most of her fans :)

Never heard of 'Cradle of Filth' and I suspect that's a good thing.
My current workplace plays Radio 2 a lot of the time and judging by a lot of the music played I'm the audience they're aiming for which would've horrified me 30 years ago.
They have a few good songs but my favorite thing by them is a cover of Iron Maiden's Hallowed Be Thy Name. The singer has a pretty unique and creepy style.

I mean, this shows how Björk is to some degree violent, and anti-social, but what does any of that have to do with being a hipster? what is your definition of a hipster?

still a really cool find, so thanks for that. I had no idea she hated paparazzi that much

I love that video too. The guy who made it paired the clips with the music amazingly well.
