9th Civ: It's Sweden

It makes some sense, though. The Dutch, Austrians, and Swedes are part of the Renaissance scenario. The Huns and Byzantines are for the Fall of Rome scenario. The Celts have been long requested and is very different from the usual criticism of Eurocentrism, which refers to a glut of Enlightenment civilizations.

Just like Civ3: Conquests focused on scenario civs, which is why we got the Hittites and Sumerians for the first time, this seems to have a similar focus.

Also, if the scenarios are anywhere near as well done as in Civ3 Conquests for me it will have been worth it - loved every one of those, and haven't been nearly as impressed by the Civ 4 and 5 ones.

I'm going to choose to take this news optimistically. If Civs like Sweden and the Huns can get in, just think of the possibilities in Africa/Asia/Americas. Suddenly Kongo doesn't seem as far fetched, nor does American tribes like the Navajo or Mississippians. Or Im in stage 3, call it what you will.

 I like your thinking, and I'm encouraged by your optimism, but I do think you're probably just in stage 3. ;)

Yes, Sweden make sense because of the scenario. But after all the defense I, and others, had to do to justify Brazil, Gran Colombia or another south american or african civ on the game, I feel kind of betrayed.

Sweden was never a super power, dont fill a geographical blank, is not unique, hardly will offer a creative gameplay. Of course I can be surprised, but I cant see how sweden will bring something new to the game.

I would like to see all the people who were against the south americans civs now use the same arguments to complain about Sweden.

Well they were powerful for a while and their territory did become expansive. They were a pretty major power within Europe. Obviously not my first choice, but they still have merits.

Maybe the new civ is actually Canada led by Jaque Cartier. The clothing is fitting for the era and today is the day on which Canada was discovered in th 16th century.

The Swedes were a rather large superpower up to 1700s in the Baltic Region.

They had Sweden, Finland, a lot of the Balts, as well as some parts of the HRE.

The Empire at it's greatest expanse:

Canada? Yuck. I live in Canada and I think that would be a terrible choice.

Our country quite literally has no ground shaking history. Yeah, Canadian history is...Zzz...

This is a Renaissance leader of some sort not Shaka! People are saying its the Dutch, don't we have them already? The Netherlands right? I was guessing Gustavus Adolphus right away, not sure looking through images.

Interesting theory, but the clothing doesn't seem quite right. The boots are screaming 17th century to me.

Also, if you want to be really pedantic, today is only the anniversary of the start of Cartier's voyage - he didn't actually get to Canada until May.

Oh, of course Sweden has merits. Thats not my point.

But, a lot of people complained about the lack of this or that when we were supporting another south american civ. Now, these people should use the same argument to criticize this choice (if confirmed).

I just don't see what Sweden can offer that makes it that unique of a civ, and they won't have any unique gameplay characteristics. All of these European leaders are going to run together.

EDIT: Never mind. I agree, must be a renaissance leader (was my first thought too). A bit weird to have both Sweden and the Vikings, though...
The Vikings already have Ski Infantry, so they obviously represent both medieval and renaissance/industrial Scandinavians.

Not saying that it's a good choice or a bad choice, but they could give them any gameplay characteristic they want. Not sure how you can decide already that they wouldn't be fun to play.

Well I hope that the handful of people who called Sweden several weeks ago are brimming with pride.

Is Willem van Oranje already confirmed? Because it might be a part of his clothing.

Yep, and we already have pics and video of him.

Yea lol. And anyone know the name of the person who was at Pax who told us it would be a Nordic/Ice based civ?

He had some good info.
