Much as I like to include new players, I gotta agree with Symphony here. I actually have next to no controls over people who join End of Empires as-is, and while the backstory does a pretty decent job of intimidating away people who aren't looking for a serious cradle NES...

I don't know. I have a lot invested in my work here -- somewhere on the order of five years -- and as a result I have become something of a conservative. But on the other hand, I think that attitude is justified. I have invested enormous amounts of time here, and while I'd like to actively recruit new people, I'd like to have a very clear idea of what I am recruiting them to. That is, I want people to be accepted into a vibrant community, where the players are capable of serious roleplaying and extremely intellectual fun. The consistent community culture is pretty important -- it helps acclimate people, and subconsciously influences them to fall into line with the social norms of the community. Smashing another group into the mix seems like a recipe for disaster, as you'll have two cultures with divergent aims, no clear subculture for newcomers to understand, and a lot of clashing viewpoints.

In other words, the hypothetical Nebberpug community will be a rudderless ship, probably not super inviting to newbies as outside of individual NESes (...slash Nebberpugs) it will give off the [correct] impression of politicking and navel gazing and a generally toxic, polarized environment.

I don't see why this is desirable.

Forgive incoherence/ramblyness, I have limited cognitive functioning on weekdays.

From the thread in the NES forum.

For the record, "Nebberpug" is a satirical reading of a hypothetical post-merger name, "NBRPG". :p

From what I have read here and in the NESing forum, it is all about the personalities involved. The apple/orange shop analogy is interesting, but misses the point. Each fruit draws different customers and not everyone feels the "love." In spite of its several faults and sometimes rancorous mob mentality, NESing is a pretty successful community. It is easy to see how it might draw interest from those who are similarly minded in IOT.

My solution: IOTers who want to merge their forum with NES should spend the next six months playing NESes. Don't come and hang out. Play their games. Get to know the regulars, be part of the community; demonstrate to the skeptical that you are not Attila the IOTer. Let them get to know you as a player. Discover the warm and fuzzy side of Luckymoose. He does actually have one. Win their hearts and minds on their turf and you will be invited.

Ironically, this is what would happen anyway if a forced merger happened right now.

Actually, IOTers migrating over to play in NESes is not the same as community merger.

Otherwise you wouldn't be advocating for anything at all in the first place!

Luckymoose's warm and fuzzy side is known to burn and shock. :3 I welcome everyone to join any of my TerraNESes (srs bsns) or my SilliNESes (silli bsns) as they pop up.

I voted no, but after some thought, I welcome the merger.

Your inferior culture will be absorbed into our own, as the Native Americans bowed before the Anglo-Saxon race. Or, failing that, herded onto reservations where you will suffer below average life expectancies as a result of Gov't provided mac and cheese-based diets. There are no cases where a NESer has switched his focus to IOTs, and several cases where IOTers have been absorbed into the hivemind after being properly civilized.

Deus Vult.

I voted no due to the annoyance of having all the threads merged together on one page, but I dont in particular feel strongly one way or another

@Shadow, doesn't Tali count as a guy who switched from NESing to IOT?

Edit: Apparently though started as IOT and went to NESing? I dunno

Me and Luckymoose have ventured into the heart of darkness (iot chat) to discover the IOTer in his native habitat. It was cordial. Having said that though, I don't see a reason to merge the subforums.

If the IOTers want postcount, just give them their postcount.

Or take away postcount from every forum except the actual Civ forums. I barely even notice mine unless people draw attention to it.

People need to worry less about there e-peen post count.

I just want know how many goddamn posts I've written. I have plenty of epeen on TWC.

I meant mainly the bit about everyone thinking nothing of it in 6 months as people got over themselves and realized that A) NESers aren't so great, and B) IOTers are people, too.

The more people say I'm not allowed to know something, the more I want to know it.

Elitism is a factor that improves the quality of our games, encourages players to improve and develop in their cooperative efforts to make better stories, and contributes to our enjoyment of them. We don't want our elitism cracked. Why can't we just be left alone to be elitist with anyone who wants to join in our elitist activity too? You don't want to be elitist; so why are you intent on merging into a forum that you consider - probably reasonably correctly - to be full of elitists?

That's not how elitism works.

As I've already said, I still can't see why so many IOTers are so intent on merging with us when we don't want to merge with them. It really is rather like trying to make someone share a house with you who has repeatedly and explicitly said they don't want to share a house with you...

To clarify, I would only want to merge the two forums when we reach majority consensus. Which we are clearly far from at the moment.

That is an excellent idea and I would totally take part if I were not experiencing a large wad of RL at the moment. Also, some NESers should take part in IOT, if they want. There's some good ones going on at the moment, ones that I would join if I had time.

Incidentally, this whole interaction has led to me discovering Tyo's IOT, and I've been waiting for some time to play another alien species in a NES/IOT/nation building role playing game.
