Aksum - Antiquity Age Civilization

The African coast of the Red Sea was the domain of Aksum, named by the prophet Mani as one of the four key powers of the ancient world. For most of the first millennium AD, Aksumite merchants bore ivory, gold, spices and other goods from the African interior to India, Persia, and the Mediterranean. Yet these trade routes planted the seeds of Aksum’s fall – when the Arab caliphates took over the Silk Road, Aksum was isolated and fell into decline.

I don't usually associate Dhow with Aksum.

that was Amina, a Hausa queen. Aksum and Songhai don’t have any known leaders at the moment.
Amina is the associated leader for Songhai.

She led the Zazzau kingdom which was a direct successor state of the Songhai Empire.

And what is that Asian dude standing in front of this city? Axumite wears this?
That's Confucius, who is affiliated with China (likely split into multiple dynasties like India was), so the Chinese leader for Antiquity if you will.

Aksum was a precursor of Ethiopia, so their associated leader, if any, will be black.

How do you know? None of the civs in the game guide have a leader
Playing Amina is one of the conditions to unlock Songhai (the other two are playing Age 1 as Egypt or Aksum)

Hence her affiliation with the playable Age 2 Songhai Civ.

Amina is the associated leader for Songhai.

She led the Zazzau kingdom which was a direct successor state of the Songhai Empire.
The Zazzau Kingdom was contemporaneous to the Songhai Empire (at least for most of their histories—by Amina’s rule, the Songhai were on their way out, but the two still have no relationship). It also had nothing to do with the Songhai empire (it was south of the empire’s southernmost boundary, and doesn’t share any cultural features)

My hope is that she’s the associated leader with the Hausa, and the Songhai don’t have a leader at the moment, which is why she’s also getting easy access to the Songhai

The trailer showed how the UI mentions if you pick the "historical choice".
Hathsepsut for Egypt, Ashoka for Maurya,...
This (unnamed?) girl was the one for Aksum:

that’s Amina of Zazzou. She’s not Aksum’s associated leader, it looks like Aksum doesn’t have an associated leader, at least at the moment.

She should be the associated leader for the Hausa, if they’re in the game. If she’s the associated leader for the Songhai, it would be a historical inaccuracy.

Well, I mean that's what the current state of the game shows. A specific "Historical Choice!" that appears when you select the "correct Civ".
In this case the interpretation probably is that by picking Aksum, you will be allowed to select "her" people down the line. Whereas if she supported Maya, she'd have no reasonable path to Songhai or Hausa.

sure, but it seems like there’s multiple options for many civs/leaders—hence why songhai naturally leads from egypt, amina or aksum

Oh right, you reminded me of the Amina -> Songhai is always available thing.
Which does put Aksum as her "Historical Choice!" kind of a satire since the only connection is she's black (and let's not even touch how people from West Africa and East Africa look less alike than if you put a Native American and Asian side-by-side). :undecide:
