ALC Game #22 Take 2: Arabs/Saladin

Sadly, I've never known an AI to capitulate while it has a vassal. I'm convinced it's not possible. China would have to be destroyed, or released in another way (taking China's land or Pacal's until the land ratios break vassalage).

Usually what happens to me is the AI who I'm attacking has a vassal who breaks free because of some military/land threshold. Then, once the AI's vassal break free, I vassal the original AI who no longer has a vassal.

This was a bad map to be honest. The civs not on the big land mass were never in the running and never would have been. So in essence this game was a four player game: Sisiutil vs the 3 others on his landmass...

There's something to be said for playing with the low sea level setting on a standard map size with 2 extra civs - a playstyle that Blake, the AI designer, use to advocate as the best setup. This is what I do, and the end games are always far more interesting.

Pacal could have easily won a Cultural or Space Race though

According to the demo screen you have 496 tiles, with half of the 12 tiles of Zara's this gives 502 tiles, making 49.61%, so to get 62% you need 125 more tiles (plus or minus 1). The former Khmer cities in the NW corner of your continent give 32 tiles, which leaves 93. Furthermore capitulating Sury gives something like 8 tiles, leaving 85 tiles.
Sugar island is 25 tiles and China is 24 tiles (without the small islands for the coast, which would give you 2 more tiles if you just conquer the current cities on the island). Together this would not give domination.

As Pacal's land is a longwinded island you would need to conquer many more cities to obtain the domination limit (just over half his land), while Monty seems to have a big compact island. I'd capitulate Sury (waiting to conquer him would at most give 10 extra tiles) take sugar island (easy landgrab), and then hit Monty. He's technologically inferior and taking just a few of his cities should be enough. (Do try and find a forested hill to land on though ;-)).

PS I don't think it is worth the trouble to raze the barb city on sugar island and replace it by two new cities. That would just take a lot of effort, while the island's only purpose is giving a few extra tiles, so that you need to conquer one or two less cities from Monty (or if you so decide, Pacal). For this purpose the barb cities are located fine.

I suppose.

If I was playing as Pacal in this game, I could have easily won a Culture or Space, yes, even with the massive continent of Saladin/Zara/Sury/Roosevelt.

What!?! A human player... more clever than and AI? Now, I have seen everything... =P

The AI doesnt REALLY go for culture anyways, but yes, Pacal could have easily gone for a culture to win.

Estruscan needs a drydock, coal plant and Islam spreading to it first so that the builds can use the 25% bonus for Islam being the state religion and your being in Org Religion and US (to buy the drydock and coal plant). Estruscan will build galleons quickly and you have other large coastal cities that could build galleons as well.

Rebasing some airships to Monty's cities as Saladin have OB with him will reveal the interior of Montyland more quickly than sendng spies there.

As Monty has a couple of cities close to Mutal, the fact that he has destroyers won't matter much as a stack of troops and spies can be based in Monty's city.

Sury techs better than Zara. Taking his offer and demanding all of Zara's cities may trigger a war in which Arabia can annex Ethiopia; either way Arabia gifts the island cities to Sury. Sury ought to finish Electricity as Saladin learns Fascism and be friendly enough to trade it to open up Industrialism.

Yea, Im confused on that also, I thought that the only way to break a capitulation was to demand resources a be refused... Am I wrong?

The AI does a better job of managing cultural victory in BTS.

@ Sam_Yeager - Agreed, they do a much better job, as in they try sometimes. I have played quite a few games... and never seen a successful try at it... And the only time I have ever seen them get close (I think they hit two at over 75000 on Epic and about 30 turns away from the other), I was space racing and got there first. The AI goes for late cultural wins. A human player tends to get to a certain research point, and then turns off research in favor of culture... you don't see the AI do that. They will just focus on three cities, making sure cultural wonders and buildings and distributed between them, but, again, they wont actually win it until late, late game. And by that time, if you cant surge in with 'copters and tanks and airplanes and stop them, you deserve to lose. :D

@ r_rolo1 ANY demand? I guess I have never tried city... but Im pretty sure I have been refused techs, and gold before (that was BEFORE I used the unofficial patch, I cant really remember a time being refused after that, so maybe that fixed it because of "worst enemy" status... dont know), and even world map actually... and I couldnt unvassalize them. I remember this specifically, because I had the game set on ONLY a conquest win, and I decided the Russians needed to die, not just be my vassal, and I tried EVERYTHING to get them to declare on me, and they wouldnt budge...

@r_rolo. One small glitch in your demand city plan. When trading with vassals their cities do not appear in the trade screen.

EDIT: Ehhhhh.... Double post.... sorry

EDIT: Wow, its not to often you double post the same message 5 hours after the first one... I am going to blame the internet!

So it's victory for Sisiladin at last, isn't it ? :goodjob:

Take Surys capitulation and send him to retirement on his islands.
Try to spy on Monty as much as possible while upgrading to Infantery (maybe research flight/radio for some later bombers ?) and then pay him a visit.

I'd not go on Pacal, your trade income with him is +83:gold: at the moment, could be a bit harsh to loose that money when declaring on him.
Additionally, Monty will be quite backwards as usual.

Oh and - don't look at Mutal, it's just buildings there :D

I have a question about the thread, not the game. We're already to 976 posts, and the mods usually close threads once they reach 1000 posts, don't they? Does that only apply in other areas of CFC, or does the ALC have an exemption? Has this happened in any other ALC before?

Knock knock, anybody home?
