Need help? The Dardenelles are in Turkish territory. Where does it say that they need help?

Well, it looks yellow to me  But, I guess it makes sense that they'd share it, considering all the nations having coasts in the Black Sea. For the sake of balance, it makes sense that you'd come up with some agreement.

EDIT: Though it's good to see the revival of Moorish Spain, the good Spain.

...are you serious?

Russia in the 17th or 18th century could easily kill the Ottomans blindfolded. so, they didn't try very hard. i never saw Russia trying to gain access to Istanbul or anything else, besides Crimea

EDIT: We need to get Dachs in here to give Mathalamus a good historical whipping.

Even if that were true, Russia still faced the problem that everyone else in Europe didn't want them in the Med, as well as regular belligerance with its neighbours (Persia, Poland, Sweden, etc).

Yes, Russia could have beaten the Ottomans blindfolded by that point, if Britain and France weren't propping the Ottomans up.

Wasn't that one of the reasons for the dislike between Austria-Hungary and the Russian Empire?

I think they struck deal, Austria-Hungary getting some Balkan land while they were supposed to help the Russians open the Med up. But it failed (due to the other Europeans), and the Russkies didn't get anything and ended up feeling screwed over by Austria-Hungary.

Correct me if I'm wrong :D

Russia stupidly expected Austrian help in the Crimean War, yeah.

Not really. Not in the 17th and early 18th century. I mean, the Ottomans were besieging Vienna in 1688. Tsar Peter the Great tried to invade in the 1710s and got screwed. Not until 1774 were the Ottomans forced to release the Crimea (which until this point had been raiding Russian territory as far as Moscow). Once they had the Crimea, then Russians began looking further south.

The Tsars thought of themselves as the heirs of Byzantium and protectors of the Orthodox faith (including those in the Ottoman Empire). Access to the Mediterranean and control of Constantinople (or at least permission to sail through the Dardanelles) had long been a Russian objective, and was one of the contributing factors to its involvement in subsequent wars against Turkey, its interference in the Greek War of Independece, and the Crimean War. By the time of this last conflict, of course, the British and French were unwilling to let the Russians or anyone else become master of the Eastern Mediterranean, so they propped up the Ottomans.
