RE: Greenland: it's currently not part of the EU; they withdrew after attaining self-government. But because it's still part of Denmark it's still subject to some EU laws.

And by 2021 all of the ex-Yugoslav states would have joined the EU.

Not likely.

Well, since it's Yom Kippur today, let's take a look at some war maps... ;)

Yom Kippur War, Oct 6 – 25, 1973:

Egyptian attack, failed initial Israeli counterattacks, and the failed Egyptian armoured thrust into Sinai

Golan Heights front, Syrian offensive, Israeli counter-strike and exploitation:

well, Israel clearly, either lost or gave up the new territory. i forgot which.

Greenland is part of Denmark, which is an EU member.

Greenland is not any more part of Denmark, than Scotland is a part of England.

It's an autonomous country under the Crown of Denmark, but it is not part of Denmark or the EU for that matter.

It's a part of Britain (the UK), just as Greenland is a part of Denmark.

An unfortunate situation that needs to be corrected. The Greenlanders need to be put in their place - they've been sucking money from Denmark for decades while offering very little in return, and now, when it looks like Greenland might actually have some resources to exploit, it wants to break off? Yeah, right...

A bit like Western Australians, then... :mischief:

this map needs no explanation. for now its at...1738. and focuses on that one state. is it good or do i need to rework the borders a little?

What, did the Ottoman Empire collapse early or did it never get started? Having Turkey that small in 1738 doesn't seem realistic.

This being posted by Mathalamus, I can confidently say that is the Byzantine Empire.

Earth under Il'lari occupation, 10 years after the Hyperdrive War. Colours denote territories controlled by major Il'lari lineages whose names are included.

Wouldn't the borders be, well, not based on current OTL borders?

Why not? The Il'lari took over existing administrative/political units, as any good invader does. They knew very well that they'd be unable to effectively occupy Earth if they completely destroyed the existing governmental systems.

Also, many countries surrendered without much of a fight when they realized how hopeless any resistance would be (Europe, for example). Countries which fought (USA, China, Brazil, Russia, etc.) were treated considerably less leniently, as the map shows. The irony is that the Il'lari culture greatly values prestige derived from defeating enemies in honourable fight, so the countries which resisted were divided between those lineages whose forces contributed most to their defeat. There was little prestige to be gained from simply landing occupation forces and taking over administration of the countries which surrendered, and so while the powerful lineages were still fighting in places like North America and China, the less influential lineages managed to grab more territory.

Serious question: why are there so many Byzantophiles on CFC/Paradox/history-related forums? Outside of Roman Empire fetishism and Greek nationalism I can't think of a good reason.

They're the scourge of the History-themed strategy gaming world.

If I had more room in my sig I would keep tailless' quote.

well, for me they had a glorious military history, Constantinople was the greatest city for a while, and they seemed to be fairly advanced, compared to other countries at their times, until about 1200 or so.

if i were truly a byzantophile, i would have had Byzantium rule a largeer area. i know that its pretty much impossible, even if you tried assimilating them.

I am not exactly a Byzantophile, but I must say playing as the Byzantines has a strange appeal to it.

Face it, it's a good story - intrigue, empire, fight against stronger enemies, glory, twists and reverses, betrayal, lost opportunities, and a final battle. If a history of one country could be distilled into a Hollywood blockbuster, this one would make a lot of money.

Also, in EU3 I like to destroy Turkey (and Islam :p ) over and over again, and it's a lot of fun doing it as the Byzantines.

im surprised they haven't already. seriously, a dramatized version of the final battle would be awesome.
