April 2021 Developer Livestream Discussion

Very honestly, a lot of what I've read here leaves me cold... I don't think there are more than 2-3 civ changes that seem intriguing enough for me to want to replay those civs

Personally, only the Khmer and Mapuche have gotten enough of a rework to feel like they are worth playing again. I'm going to give the Khmer another go but, even with the changes, the Mapuche don't seem like they are worth giving a try.

The TSL map, is, still, eh, it would be still better to use Workshop maps, unless Atlantis or something actually showed up. (Sorry Console players)
If I'd knew someone making some kind of maps mod pack, I'd surely suggest him to add it !

+2 gold, +2 science in the Ikanda

Yeah, but the Impi is still a bit lame, even though it got buffed a bit.

Compare Civ VI's Zulu with the amazingly well thought out and designed Zulu in Civ V.
I mean they really were one of the better if not the best designed civ in Civ V!

Those buffalo promotions from the Ikanda.
The Impi bonus vs. gunpowder units (to simulate the historical victory The Zulu had vs. the English).
That ranged pre-attack was a bit weird but a fun historical thing. Spear throw, was it?

Really how superb the Zulu were in Civ V....to have regressed in Civ VI.

But I do like Shaka's theme in Civ VI. At least the music is good.

Minor buffs to Babylon and Gaul, with the Man-at-Arms being available at Apprenticeship, which both of them can reach pretty fast. It will most likely still require Iron though.

I'm curious about that because they didn't directly mention that the Gaesatae upgrades into the Man-at-Arms since it currently upgrades to the Musketman. Guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Also, kind of disappointed that the Varu doesn't upgrade into a Knight so now you have build some of those separately if you want the Eureka.

I'm generally happy with changes. Korea didn't need a buff, but at least it's a bit more rewarding for active decisions. Russia can afford the nerf with no other changes, but needed a buff for Peter to be interesting. Sumeria was already very strong, so I dont mind that their change is external. Khmer, Gorgo, Mapuche, Scythia, Spain, etc. are now all vastly more interesting. Is it all perfect? No, clearly not. But it's a very good set of changes none the less. Kudos!

Is what they said the entire entry of updated civs? Like will there be more in the update or not?

II've been waiting for the update to play the Mapuche.

IMO the changes are pretty significant. Flipping cities won't be as easy as Elanor but still I think could be fun especially in Dramatic Ages mode where you're likely to get a ton of free cities.

Not completely onboard with all of the changes but most of them look good. This is the type stuff that I wanted to see from the free updates. I only wish there had been an opportunity to do these kinds of passes all across the board for the whole game. Lots of mechanics could be tweaked and balanced.

The majority of those changes are small or cosmetic tweaks rather than Khmer or Spanish-like redesigns. The things are most interesting in the patch we already knew after last week's video. I was expecting this, but anyway it makes me disappointed. Giving to Aztec's UB +1 culture is a barely noticeable detail. And hooray for Poland. They can now lose a game with their culture bomb. At least that's historically fitting to my country :crazyeye:
Long story short. The changes are fine, but I feel let down.

Some of the buffs defy any explanation. A science buff to Ikandas. What nonsense is this? To help them when they're already great.

Even more buffs to Korea? Who was asking for that? Removing science from mines, I could get behind that!

I think Poland also should get a significant benefit from the Winged Hussar integrating better with cavalry units, right?

But Kongo's buffnerf... I can see why they did that, they have been suffering as faith became more important and needed more ways to generate it. Though I worry if that change will be enough... making great writers more abundant for people should make the game a lot more fun... But mmm... Not so sure. Kongo maybe just dropped a tier?

Yeah Kongo didn't make a lot of sense to me. Remove great writers - fine. But the +1 faith for relics/sculptures/relics is pretty meh - Kongo can't really do much of a faith economy, and this comes pretty late. I guess the idea is to make it easier for them to get rock bands for late game tourist win?

Very strange change to Poland, they said that "Poland has no bonuses to founding a religion" yet Poland gets a Wildcard at Code of Laws and can quickly slot in Revelation for +2 Prophet points per turn. The change to the Hussar is fine, it's more historically accurate and circumvents the difficult culture split of needing to pursue Mercenaries while also following the Theology/etc. track at the bottom. Even if they changed nothing else, I would have preferred a production bonus to Commercial Hubs, Holy Sites, and Encampments.

I am sure there is a lot in the patch notes that escaped this video, though. You could tell they were very rushed.

I'm okay with most of the changes. Aztecs don't interest me much. I never cared for that civ anyways, so unlikely I'll ever play them again. Korea needed a serious rework. Instead they got stronger. Sigh. I would be okay with the science if they had to work a little harder for it. As it is, it's practically free science.

Does look like secret societies does put Atlantis on TSL Earth map. Still not sure it's worth it to me though.
