April 2021 Developer Livestream Discussion

Still waiting to hear The Netherlands buffs :shifty:

Nerfs you mean. Will surrender immediately when invaded by the German civilization.

The TSL map, is, still, eh, it would be still better to use Workshop maps, unless Atlantis or something actually showed up. (Sorry Console players)
This map is a life changer for us.

Personally, only the Khmer and Mapuche have gotten enough of a rework to feel like they are worth playing again. I'm going to give the Khmer another go but, even with the changes, the Mapuche don't seem like they are worth giving a try.

I'd say Spain's rework is significant enough for me to give them another go. The trade route bonuses are significant as are the new continent bonuses. Changes them from purely trying to win a religious victory to being able to build a wide trading empire.

IMO the changes are pretty significant. Flipping cities won't be as easy as Elanor but still I think could be fun especially in Dramatic Ages mode where you're likely to get a ton of free cities.

My big problem with the Mapuche is that you need to be at war with someone and if you are just take their cities directly. The flipping seems kind of pointless in that regard because if you are going domination grievances don't really matter that much anyway.

I think Poland also should get a significant benefit from the Winged Hussar integrating better with cavalry units, right?

If it is now a unit replacement then that means that the Winged Hussar can now be upgraded from knights?
(This is probably true for all those UUs that are now upgradable. The Samurai, The Berserker, The Redcoat, Guarde Imperiale. They can all be upgraded from earlier melee units. E.g: Swordsman, Musketmen, etc. That's pretty significant IMO).

Eh, trade doesn't win the game which is my problem with Portugal. Sure, you have great trade routes but none of the games make the game more interesting to play. Personally, I'm good enough at the game that the buffs to Spain don't make the game more interesting since they just make it easier to do basic things, which is boring.

Nothing about AI not improving resources.
Nothing about AI not able to use cassus beli.
Nothing about AI able to use heroes.
Nothing about Barbs stop spawning in Barbarians clans.
Nothing about too big tourism from monopolies.

Earth map looks weak. Should be larger, have enlarged parts i.e. Europe and randomized natural wonders.
So, when you play in Africa, just go to Sahara and you will always spot 2 same natural wonders, same. boring handicap.

The rest is fine, although without big effort like, as oppositely before on spain or mapuche.

If i understand it correctly they can be upgraded to from chariots now,

Why do you think this? The Cuirasser upgrades from the Knight, which would apply to the Wing Hussar.

I'm a bit concerned about Russia. They nerfed more than was needed, as only the Lavra was broken, but then didn't buff Peter at all.

Because units can skip upgrade tiers? If i haven't upgrade my swords and i researched infantry, i can upgrade those swords into infantry directly. The same applies here as they're all in the same Heavy Cavalry unit class. I believe Knights have to be researched, but no intermediate upgrade is needed if you get both Stirrups and Mercenaries (both Medieval tech/civic btw).

Very strange change to Poland, they said that "Poland has no bonuses to founding a religion" yet Poland gets a Wildcard at Code of Laws and can quickly slot in Revelation for +2 Prophet points per turn.

The moment I heard that, I was left scratching my head too. Poland has an easier time than many in getting a religion due to an early Revelation card so this was one of the strangest reveals on the livestream.

I’m most impressed about the changes to the Mayans but I’m worried this makes it TOO easy for them.

Glad Kongo has some extra Faith income now but seems small. Kurgan and Ikanda changes very welcome.

I’m so glad they changed the Lavra. Now I don’t have to use all my spare writers as out-of-place scouts and they needed the nerf IMO.

Korea got a buff. Wow. Not sure how I feel about that.

I’ve gotten more used to the fact that Georgia’s new leader ability is quite significant over the last week including hearing them talk about it today. Also, did Siege Tactics trigger with the trebuchet instead of a bombard? That makes it easier for Tamar to beeline that if so.

In the end, I like all the changes I heard except the weirdness of Poland’s.

Some of the buffs defy any explanation. A science buff to Ikandas. What nonsense is this? To help them when they're already great

The Zulu are not great in Civ VI.

Babylon is great.
Byzantium is great.
Gaul is a better Zulu.

The Zulu in Civ VI is rather like some afterthought. What historical basis does the Zulu have for early military formations?
I think that's Greece. (If anything Greece's hoplite should have had the ability to form corps. Or Greece should've had that ability earlier. Not the Zulu).

Just rollover the UI from Civ V, the Ikanda and make it generic. Throw in some science. Some housing. Yeah, why not?!

Thanx for updating me during the last 10 pages civfanatics on the april stream. I guess there will be a couple of hotfixes and small surprises ahead of us still. But the next 3-4 years would most likely result in a big silence period again from firaxis. Waiting for a civilization 7 announcement. Perhaps it takes 1-2 years longer than expected. While we continue playing previous civilization games.

My hopes lie on a community effort mod overhaul for civ 6 to provide some continuous entertainment. I am quite fond of civ 6 do. And will update my mod list after a month or so to see what the community has provided so far. Currently my list of must include mods consists of like 20 mods. And 10 small optional ones.

the civ balance update will probably result in me playing like 10 previous civs. I’ve never actually won a game as Peter even do the free tiles always seemed to be very strong. Sad to see it nerfed by 3 tiles do. I never liked a faith based Russia much with the lavra.

Maya update seems nice and there are plenty of civs with a buff or changed game plans to go for. Even a +3 combat strenght hoplite buff.

Sure but I doubt that the Winged Hussars are staying at Mercenaries because you don’t get unique units two whole eras earlier. The are probably going to at Ballistics just like Cuirassier since Poland likes Forts.
