Ask a Mormon, Part 3

Maybe we should wait for a Mormon to answer? But my understanding is smith created his own because god told him they were all wrong.

Dude, that's pretty much how most religions start. Some guy gets a revelation about the "truth" and he starts a movement around the idea.

Joseph Smith was arrested a number of times but never convicted of anything, fraud or otherwise. He did almost get summarily executed once, though.

Do you know what he was arrested for ? It had to do with hes gold prospecting if Iam not mistaken.

yes, I know. It just seems to me it's odd that they then bother to try and be called Christian, when all other Christian branches accept each other's main teachings (Protestant,Orthodox, Catholic)

please, someone correct me if I'm wrong

well, as far as my knowledge goes, Mormons don't entirely disagree with teachings of other religions, we just believe that we are the only church that has ALL the truth. Other churches (or religions) have truth, just not its entirety, so we don't entirely disagree with teachings of other churches

whta's the mormons' stance on drugs?

Just say no.

What's your stance on other Christian groups??? Am I going to hell?

You're not condemned to Hell because you don't believe the same things we do, no. A lot of where people go depends on how much they try to be a good person, whatever their definition of a good person is. In order to reach the highest celestial glory of heaven though, one must be baptized by someone who has the authority to act in God's name (the priesthood).

What is the Mormon position on all this about the Reformed Egyptian stuff. All of your holy books are based on it, but it is basically something Joseph Smith made up. I know one of his followers took it to a professor and claimed he "confirmed it" but later the professor sent off a letter, furious, claiming anything but.

Martin Harris took a paper with a number of the symbols on it to a professor, who signed a document certifying it's authenticy. He then asked to see the book from whence they came. When Martin told him that only the prophet could read the book, he asked for the letter back and tore it up, saying "I cannot read a sealed book". That's Martin's account at least.

So what exactly are you asking? Whether or not we believe what we do? Yes, we believe that the Book of Mormon was written in a script called "reformed Egyptian", and that Joseph Smith translated it through the power of God.

Also, how do you claim to be Christian if apparently you do not accept God as the only god, and if Smith claimed all the other churches were wrong.

Well what do you mean?

How does not agreeing with the doctrines of other churches not make us Christian? We believe in Christ as our Savior and strive to follow him. Followers of Christ = Christian. Full stop.

Please leave the question answering to us LDS members. This thread is called "Ask a Mormon", after all. We'll be more than happy to answer :)

He was wanted for whatever was the most conveniant excuse at the time, to be honest. He was never able to be kept in custody for legitimate reasons, as far as I know.

Essentially. We claim to have direct guidance and inspiration from God, as well as his Authority on Earth. Other churches can believe correct principles. The phrase that often comes to mind is "having a form of Godliness, but lacking the power thereof". Just because you're Hindu doesn't mean you're condemned for all eternity.

he was arrested many times, but he was never convicted of any wrong doings, because all arrests had no legal basis...

once again, I know relatively little about my church ( sad, I know, I'm trying to learn more currently), and if I said anything wrong, please correct me

And missionaries don't have a blacklist for anyone's address. After all, people move or change their minds.

Its not exactly a blacklist, but we did keep a pretty detailed area book, which included which addresses we've already knocked on, what their reactions were, etc. Since Missionaries can leave an area every 6 weeks, its important that they can share relevant info, and not waste anybody's time. Plus, this way, you don't have guys knocking on your door every month.

You've got it exactly right, afaik :)

My friend said mormons all want multiple wives is that true????

I mean, the Mormon faith violates everything that is said in The Bible. They contradict each other very throughly. For example in Rev. 22:18-19 the Bible makes itself very clear in stating that it is the final Word and nothing can be added on to it, yet you all believe in the Pearl of Great Price, Doctrine and Covenants, and The Book of Mormon.

Also, you believe God, as well as Jesus are mere men, with flesh and bones. They, according to Chrisitan belief, are spirit as well as eternal, not mortal. You also teach Lucifer is the younger brother of Jesus. And yes, you believe in three levels of heaven, the highest of which is only for Mormons.

My question is, in the face of all of this and more, why do you consider yourself Christian?

Also, didn't he decipher the "Reformed Egyptian" with the Urim and Thummim, not God?

FYI, it says that in the TORAH (OLD testament) yet you arent complaining that the NEW testament was added.

not even caffeine?

what about medical emergencies?
no morphines with a severed leg?

Ah, see, I knew you were going to do that.

Caffeine is not prohibited, nor are prescription drugs for medical use.

Deuteronomy 4:12, in fact; plus, the Book of Revelation wasn't the last book of the New Testament written, so several others have to be discarded. Unless, of course, that verse refers only to the Book of Revelation itself (makes sense as the New Testament wasn't put together until later anyways).
