I think you can do LA to Sydney for roughly $2000 return, maybe a little less. I'd say cost of living is very high but cost of traveling far lower. I don't believe hotels etc have kept pace with rent, utilities, home ownership etc,

Realistically though (and I'm biased as I hate long flights), to travel this far for one week is crazy. You have far better holiday destinations closer to home. I'd think you need three weeks to justify the flight.
