Ask an Israeli

Aren't you mistaken with Judea? 'Israel' means 'fighting alongside god'.

You can make a similar argument for any ethnic group, it still doesnt mean all members of that group are to be judged by the actions of the "homeland" or vice versa.

Well I don't say that all Jewish people are to be blamed for what the state of Israel is doing.

I don't even think that you can blame all citizens of a given state for what its government is doing.

Jewish peoples named their own country "Jewland" (Israel).

Israel literally means "Jewland", or even just "Jews" (depends if you use it as a name for peoples or for territory).

Do you feel people can talk about Israel without bringing up their current conflicts? How do you feel about your country being defined in terms of this conflict?

@SS 18 ICBM: my country is being defined in the most harsh way i could thought about. Yes, people CAN talk about Israel without bringing the current conflict.

@Domen: israeli politicians are corrupt. They want to close a newspaper because its free(what the...)

Regarding the meaning of Israel(ישראל), it means something like "the place of the god", or "god may place himself". Its actually a two-word combination.

P.S, don't blame the Jews for the "doings" of Israel, and trust me, Benjamin Nethanyu would like a Nobel prize very much, its just he loves being the Israeli PM more, apparently.

Oh. I've thought of a serious question: what happened to all that idealism of the kibbutzniks?

Is it still going strong? And have you ever worked on one yourself?

Why are so many Jews against the state of Israel?

I wasn't aware that many Jews are against Israel, unless you talking about the extremist orthodox, which basically think that the entire concept of "Jewish state" is slowing the arrival of the messiah, and other religious reasons...

I don't know what idealism of kibbutz you exactly talking about, but there are many kibbutzim(plural of kibbutz) in Israel the kibbutzim went through some reforms in recent years, though. I never worked in a kibbutz myself.

I thought the kibbutzim were idealistically socialist:" to each according to their needs from each according to their abilities" type of thing.

Communal living, living without private property, and all that.

How big a role does the conflict play during elections?

What are some of the biggest issues during campaigns for elections not related to the conflict?

No, I am talking of the liberal kind of Jew. In fact some have said the have "resigned" from being Jewish to their perceived wrong doings of Israel. This is an interesting article.

@ classical_hero: i need to do some more research to give you an answer.
@Ziggy stardust(by the way, Ziggy is typical Israeli nickname): it plays a big role. Other issues include the definition of "Jew", the high property(\living) prices in Israel and internal conflicts between harredi Jews to atheists.
@Borachio: kibbutzim are social. But they have been reformed, now they are bigger and more expended, and a bit less social...

I need to know about two things: your best research universities and the local take on roasted meat.

Hows the media handling the current incident of the 4 dead rabbis in the attack?

Thanks Natan. Very odd issues from my point of view.

Thread delivers.

What's odd? All countries have eternal conflicts...

The media handle the death of 4 prayers in the attack pretty well... better then the CNN does, for sure...

Do you plan a visit here?;)
Best universities are Ben gurion university in Beer Sheba and the Bar ilan university.
Roasted meat... a "Jerusalem mixed"

What's odd?* All countries have eternal conflicts...
* from my point of view. Those issues are completely different from the domestic issues where I live. So from my point of view, that's odd.

Definition of "Jew" is not something we're likely to bring up, neither are conflicts between the religious and non-religious. High property prices is rather mundane, that would be possible, although it's not.

Does "Ziggy" as a nickname mean something?

Spain is about to recognize the state of Palestine, I've heard.

Does that make Spain anti-Israel? (honestly curious)

No, that doesn't. As long as they don't encourage others to do that, etc.

@ZSD: but everybody lives above the ice...
It doesn't mean anything specific, but it could refer to somebody who like shifting and switching.

Is that why you think Sweden is anti-Israel? Not because the accept Palestine, which is the reason you gave earlier, but because they're encouraging others to do so? In what way ?

To clarify something:

You asked what European countries I believe to be anti Israeli and pro Israeli. I don't think any European country except Russia is anti Israeli, but Sweden is the closest. When i said they were anti Israeli, i meant considering the position of other European countries, not in general.
