Ask Iranians

PersianBoy - you've been incredibly helpful till now . For that I thank you .

I have a few more questions .

But first , let me build up a bit of the background . Western civilisation , as defined by the renaissance and the consequent revival of the West's classical creative Greco-Roman civilisation ( and its supplanting of the non-creative Christian era which preceded it ) , is today's universal civilisation - it is all-pervasive . No matter which culture you come from , as long as you live in a settlement of any description , you are influenced by the West and its culture and civilisation . Not only are you surrounded by its artefacts , but also by its institutions . Social systems in all free societies are coming to approximate the Western model asymptotically as time goes on .

This is obviously not a process that can go on forever - Western society itself is not like a static line which can be approached , nor will other societies like India lie dormant for much longer - though it may not look like it , every Indian carries in his heart the desire to make Indian culture as all-pervasive as the West is today . India has lain dormant for so long because it was occuped by two imperialisms - the first one that of the Islamic Arabs , which completely destroyed India's wealth , and the second that of the Christian British , whose influence is more pernicious on the culture ( as well as the wealth ) of India , and which can be seen even today ( India's English educated elite are all estranged from Indian culture ) . With cultural nationalism slowly taking firmer hold , however , this will not be the case for long - people like me are actively working to undermine and destroy this new bunch of idiots who have come to dominate discourse .

Muslim societes , however , were victims of only one imperialism - that of the West . Thus , it was far easier for them to recover , and they already have recovered partially - but sadly , this recovery has taken the form of an emotional rejection of the West and its institutions and a wish to repalce them with Islamic ones . The wish in itself is not destructive . But the belief is that once Islam is imposed and the nation Islamised , the institutions will come on their own - that nobody will have to work on them , that they are the natural product of pure faith - this belief is fatal . This belief is the cause of the failure of so many Muslim societies . Equally fatal is the belief that , on the periphery of the Muslim world , there will always exist creative civilisations from which material things can be drawn - the assumption of an infinite reservior of material wealth - an assumption which was justified when Islam was expanding and conquering new territories , but not justified now that the Muslim world has been contained within itself .

Iran's Islamic revolution was born of the same desire - the people of the villages rejected the Westernised Shah and the new English and Western educated elite he sought to set up , and this rejection took the form of the revolution and the consequent Islamisation .

So tell me , PersianBoy - how successful has this rejection been ? How far has Iran succeeded in replacing Western-created systems and Western institutions ? Where are the big successes , and where are the failures ? Where , in your daily life , do you see Islam in action ?

I think there is no need to argue the specific numbers of the Holocaust. Everyone knows that it was a massive execution of people, a slaughterhouse. The numbers do not matter; just the intent matters.

My immediate family lost 8 members to the Holocaust, and my grandparents came from small families (8 was a lot of them).

Persianboy: is there anything we can do in our posts to make them easier to understand? I think you are translating them, yes?

Can people in Iran buy bootleg movies without getting into trouble (assuming they're smart about it)? Do they take requests?

PersianBoy, have you noticed the opinions of other Iranians change over the past few years? What do you think has changed the most in Iran since the year 2000?

Any questions anyone want to ask another Iranian, ask me. About anything you want, history, revolution, today, before etc. Anything.

I don't live in Iran though so there is 0.1 % chance I don't know something; but I know a lot of other stuff and I have many Iranian relatives in Iran that I can ask.

How many homosexuals are in Iran?

What's your favorite Indo-Iranian language?

This is an awesome thread, and even though this was big bump, it looks like PersianBoy still lurks around here- I was thinking maybe he'd been killed! Anyway, I suggest you look up Hamadan on wikipedia. The pictures are so exciting!

Nope. Iran has the same level of social freedom as China.
As far as I know, life is OK if you don't piss the government off.

What is the general opinion of Iranian people about their current government administration?

... about America's influence in the Middle East?

... about acquiring nuclear technology, both for power supply or weapons?

... about Israel, or Jewish people in particular?

What's your favorite Indo-Iranian language?
I am not too involved into that because I am quite young however I like Parsi which was the language before the arab attack, after the arab attack our language became named Farsi because the arabs don't have P in their alphabet thus they changed everything with P to F.

Can non-Muslims legally consume bacon in Iran?
I am not really sure about this because eating "pig" is haram in Islam; I think if they find out and if you are tourist, they will just piss you off or mess with you.
I can get you a better answer on that later if you wish.

People don't like USA. USA has always been . .. .. .. .ing with us for no reason, along with other big countries like UK and Russia.

I believe the Iranian people is more than happy to get nuclear weapons to be able to protect their country, however exil-Iranians are against this, mainly because if Iran gets nuclear weapons then there is verrrry, veeerrry little chance for Iran to be free again.. Iran will be a superpower and it will be impossible.

Me, along with many of Iranians that I know and I have seen have nothing against Israel. In fact Iran was the first middle eastern country to recognize Israel during the 1970's when Shah of Iran was in power. Iranians are very proud of that Cyrus the Great freed the jews and gave them a home, helped them and protected them. Me? I don't give a damn about Israel nor Palestine. Both of them have attempted and have . .. .. .. .ed our country. Both of them should be gone and the area that Israel and Palestine is now should become a tourist attraction place. People probably are starting to get angry at Israel, because they want to attack Iran. Of course, there exist people who hate Israel with their whole hearts, I cannot speak for over 80 million Iranians.

Even the exil-Iranians don't want USA nor Israel or any other country to attack Iran and free it, because it was USA and Israel, and these western countries who in the first place put this Islamic Government in power after overthrowing the Shah. I can go more in depth into this if you wish.

PS: Sorry for the late answers. Today was the Iranian New Year (Norouz) .. 6AM while I live so I am kinda tired. Yes, I got up! ;)

HI Irainian friends, just wondering how your oil bourse is working out?
Has that free trade island become a popular attraction or did it fizzle out like your internet connection did just prior to the set opening?.

Say I heard they were investigation into sabatoge inrelation to that weird event. On Feb 17 I think something like 5 cables were cut in all. Is there any word on how that investigation is going over there?

Right now it seems like I am the only one that can answer your question and I don't live in Iran so I have no idea about that.

Other questions I can help with.

How many homosexuals are in Iran?

I'm asking the same thing, and more. If you remember a few months ago Ahmadinejad made that crazy statement about Iran not having a homosexual problem like the US has. To us here in the US it's because Iran executes homosexuals.

And just last month I saw a program about the story of a girl who was executed because she sat in a car alone with a boy, and the morality police caught her. She was apparently an orphan and liked to be out in public by herself which apparently is enough to get you arrested.

Are these things common practice, or isolated incidents? Does Iran not have a homosexual problem because they're too afraid to admit they are? Are Iranian women that oppressed?

I've seen video of young Iranians, in Iran, who look very westernized especially the women with big Hollywood sunglasses and designer clothes. Then I see video of depressed-looking areas with women covered from head to toe in black and morality police watching everyone (the program about the executed girl). Is there a rift? Are the cities a lot more westernized, and the poorer areas a lot more fundamental?

They happen. This is what the islamic government is, destroying lives and ruining for others while you can read the high-positioned leaders themselves are caught with many prostitutes etc.

Every country has homosexuals, I didn't answer to that question because it's not serious. Do you honestly think I know the exact number? It's like any other country, perhaps the older generations see homosexuality as a bad thing but the new generation Iranians (young people etc..) see homosexuality as no big problem. It's the government.

Those black dressed people exist everywhere, even in cities and these girls with modern clothes often get in fight for breaking rules of Islam etc. Of course, the poorer areas are more fundamental! Lack of information, only by tradition and past they go forward.
