Tommy can you hear me?

Not even close. The Who by a mile.

Assuming that Black Sabbath are to be read as "Heavy Metal", rather than simply having been forgotten about, I'm going to go with Led Zeppelin. Sabbath may have invented Metal, but Zeppelin were the big brothers who showed them the way. :D

I used to have Kinks albums. Once upon a time I knew them moderately well. I liked them quite a bit. But the British Invasion has so much more.

The lack of Beatlemania in this thread makes me depressed

The Beatles, best band ever.

Led Zeppelin 2nd, from the list.

Does the Clash count?

I don't think so. They're less classic rock and more punk rock ;)

It is indeed rather grievous that Pink Floyd has been omitted.

Easily the Who for me, with Zep a close second. Beatles (especially Lennon) are overrated musically. Ditto the Stones.

ELP > Pink Floyd > Yes > Jethro Tull > King Crimson

God bless England's green and pleasant land... (especially Liverpool)

The Who are great, as are Led Zep.

I agree with you on the Beatles. They're good, but it's disgusting how much people fawn over them.

edit: do to a request, I am trying to add the Kinks to the list but I don't know how. :(

And I'm also trying to add Queen. As many bands as you guys suggest for you to add, I want to add them. I just need to know how.

You can't. Only moderators can alter polls, so you need to ask one exactly what changes you want made.

Of the bands listed, the Beatles are clearly the best; I don't understand people who say the Beatles are overrated. The sheer number of outstanding songs they recorded blows away any other band - even great bands such as Queen or the Clash. Their catalogue of quality material is so vast it's practically a genre in its own right; two people could compile lists of "my ten favourite Beatles songs" and not have a single one in common. I don't think there are any other bands or artists of whom one could legitimately say that. They are still the best band ever; I was listening to Abbey Road recently, in my opinion their best album, and it was startling to recognise the germs of so many later sounds just in that one album. Blur, Oasis, Queen - just from side 2.

However, I don't really see how the Beatles count as "classic rock". They're not really rock - more pop, surely. I take "rock" to be the more directly blues-inspired, riff-based sound that goes from the Stones to Led Zeppelin and people like that.

Of the poll options, it's quite hard to choose between The Beatles and Led Zep. I would think that the quality of Led Zep's songs is better, but the enormity of The Beatles list of classics might pip that at the post.
