So according to Fox it's perfectly ok to quitely settle numerous sexual harassment accusations. What will get you fired is if those settlements are made public. Not quite a high moral standard, is it?

"Family values" primarily means opposing abortion, gays, and liberals in general. It never extended to protecting women.

They didn't fire him cus of the lawsuits, they fired him because of financial pressure to do so cus tons of advertisers dropped his show. I'm sure it was simply about money in the end, Fox figures they lose less money by firing him and paying some part of his remaining contract and then trying to get those advertisers back, then by keeping him and paying the whole thing and losing ads.

To be fair, there's also something to be celebrated in the fact that so many gross dudes are being thrown out of work for being abusers, and that on some level abuse is even being addressed by powerful institutions like corporations ... not to say that it's likely that this will directly lead to any kind of true confrontation with the systemic abuse endemic in "our" public and private institutions, but it's a start.

While I'd probably tend to agree that the threshold for what's considered sexual harassment might be set low. You don't settle 5 claims for 35 million when all you've done is ask a girl out or compliment her.

I thought it was 20th Century Fox that settled the claims. Isn't it common for corporations to settle even if the claims are unmerited, to avoid bad press or costly court fees?

It's common for big corporations to conduct an internal investigation and then settle when their investigation turns up perverse abuse of power.

It's all about the money. They were protecting themselves from having to pay off even more money. And if that's their decision after doing their own investigation, you can reasonably assume if they thought it was cheaper to settle, there was something that made them think that. If they discovered that there was no merit to any of the accusations the best way to avoid bad press would be to fight it.

But yes you are correct that they sometimes settle to avoid it, but that's usually not the case when we're talking 5 cases and 35 mil.
