Can you identify what these world maps represent?

You guys are beginning to sniff the right dog's bottom, but no bone so far.

This is what aaglo said:

official unhappiness towards the government?

So I'll guess one of these:

Official happiness towards the government
Unofficial unhappiness towards the government
The government's happiness towards the people
The government's unhappiness towards itself

I somehow doubt that the US is one of the most corrupt nations on the planet.

No, but the cynical part of me is inclined to think that the map is Amnesty International's gradient of human rights abuses per capita committed by the government of each country in some certain year.

Srilanka , Bhutan ,Khajakiztan , Indonesia , Philippines in Asia
Tunisia in Africa
Columbia, Vanenzuela , costa risa ,panama in Latin America

are top with green

Afghanistan,North Korea ,Iraq, Somalia , Greenland are in grey

US, Russia , Turkmenistan , Niger ,Chad ,Sudan , Cenrtal african republic ,zaire angola, zabmia , south africa are brown and at the bottom.

Interesting almost all the green are island nations
All the grey are heavy conflict zones
Bottom US and russia with african countries what pattern does it match. Were they the nations who opposed Kyoto treaty?.

Hmmm..by my count, only 3 out of 10 are islands, so I don't think that is the connection...

Usually grey means 'no data availible', which would make sense if you look at the list.

Nope, Russia , Turkmenistan , Niger ,Sudan ,republic ,DR Congo, angola, and zambia all signed and ratified it.

I'm still puzzled by what these countries have in common, especially given that is has to do with both public satisfaction and some kind of environmental factor......

I am allmost positive number 4 is the happy planet index

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Planet_Index

In short it means compares the ecological damage to the level of
Happy Planet Index (HPI) is an index of human well-being and environmental impact, introduced by the New Economics Foundation (NEF), in July 2006. The index is designed to challenge well-established indices of countries’ development, such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the Human Development Index (HDI), which are seen as not taking sustainability into account. In particular, GDP is seen as inappropriate, as the ultimate aim of most people is not to be rich, but to be happy and healthy[1] and it is critical to understand what effect the pursuit of those goals has on the environment

Sunavabeech! Elta got it!

Happy Planet Index? Yerp, no wonder I didn't get it.....

Sunavabeech indeed!! Nicely done there Elta. :goodjob:

In fact, all the maps were drawn from wiki pages on these various measurements. I'll link them all up tomorrow and hopefully we can get around to discussing which are more worthwhile and useful than others.

Can't wait! I will sure be looking forward to Rambuchanistan preaching the most worthwhile and useful things for all of us to enjoy and be enlightened.:mischief:

I'm sure the people in Tunisia, Vietnam or Cuba are much more happy than French people.

And all these poor American, so unhappy... Makes me sad

It's happy planet not people ;)

It has to do with pollution too.

OK, thanks for playing guys. I hope it was fun. Here is the list of all ten, with the unblocked map and with links to the wiki pages they were drawn from:

Having identified these factors:

~ Which do you think are the really important ones?

~ What thoughts and revelations, if any, are provoked by what is shown in these?

~ Which other factors do you think are worth looking at which aren't mentioned above?

I'll start with the Happy Planet Index ("environmental efficiency of supporting well-being"). It sounds nice, but misses some crucial points, how else could Columbia score so high? Sounds useless to me as a tool to analyze development.

Right, next, try to explain these surreal maps:

15 is land mass represented by population size, no?

edit: Switch those around. Population size represented in terms of land mass.
