So this guy tries to get some erroneous charges removed from his Comcast bill and they end up calling his employer (who, incidentally, acts as a consultant for Comcast) and get him fired. How is this company still around? After pulling crap like this I really feel they should have any and all rights to conduct business within the United States permanently revoked and have all of their assets and infrastructure sold off to their competitors to ensure continuity of service.

Here are a few choice quotes from the article:

Comcast then apparently refused to reverse the error, so in February 2014, Conal decided to try something else. Being an accountant, Conal contacted Comcast's comptroller, the office that looks after the company accounts. He said he repeatedly called them about his bill, telling them that Comcast should be investigated by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.

The Consumerist says that after this, Comcast got in touch with Conal's employer.

At some point shortly after that call, someone from Comcast contacted a partner at the firm to discuss Conal. This led to an ethics investigation and Conal’s subsequent dismissal from his job; a job where he says he’d only received positive feedback and reviews for his work

It's alleged that Conal used the name of his employer during his calls with Comcast, a claim Conal denies. Instead, he says, someone working for Comcast researched him and discovered where he works. To make matters even more complicated, it's reported that the company Conal works for provides consulting services to Comcast.

That bolded part smells like a lawsuit against his former employer.

How are they still around? I guess the same way a gas company that today knowingly sent a bill illegally overcharging my best friend by 50% is still around.

Unethical business practices pay and not enough people are angry enough to complain loud enough.

Comcast should take a clue from Conal's former employer - assume the customer is always right and take the action demanded by the customer.

Comcast is a good example of why monopolies are and should be illegal. In many areas they have absolutely no competition, therefore they can behave like this. No company could have such legendary poor service if consumers had reasonable alternative options.

Oh no. I cancelled Comcast last year!

The skeptic in me says this guy got fired for other reasons. If it was a b.s. firing by his employer then he should build his case and sue in court.

Normally this would be my stance, but there are several things in this story that do seem fishy. First off, the guy claims he received nothing but positive performance reviews prior to his firing. This should be easily verifiable as performance reviews are usually kept on file somewhere, so if he were lying about that I think his former employer would be eager to produce those files to absolve themselves of any wrong-doing. Secondly, it feels like a little more than coincidence that his employer does consultation work for Comcast and he was fired after Comcast placed a call to said employer. Somehow I get the feeling the conversation went something like "get rid of this guy or we will take our business elsewhere."

He claims he received positive performance reviews. Ok then what is the cause? If the employer hasn't documented the performance then it is their problem to handle. Regardless of what Comcast may have told the consultancy all they had to do is move him to another client if he was a " proven" performer. Believe me I'm no big fan of Comcast and have fired them as my provider.

In the article it says the company conducted an ethics investigation after Comcast claimed he used his employer's name in one of his calls to them. Something about that claim screams CYA-mode to me.

I will concede that it is all pretty much he said/she said right now, but given Comcast's track record, I am extremely hesitant to give them anything resembling a shred of the benefit of the doubt.

Capitalism in the 21st century, ladies and gentlemen.

I don't know. It doesn't seem that different from capitalism in the past. I guess that however instead of shooting coal miners in Virginia and bombing them with planes, we have just resorted to threatening people getting fired if they cancel their subscription.

You might even say they've gotten meeker.

Why doesn't the Federal Trade Commission do anything?

I'm finally starting to get tired of DSL internet speeds at home, stable, but that mostly means always slow to the same degree, but I'm really dragging my feet(almost 5 years) since the only faster alternative is Comcast. I've had them before. They suck. They suck a lot. Lower approval ratings than Congress, if I remember right?
