Capto Iugulum: 1920 - 1939

To: United States of America
From: Hawaii

The people of the islands voted for the current government and we have a free and liberated republic. Our agreement with Japan extends only to protection against any warmongering attack. We wonder how you could possibly claim to liberate anyone when half of your nation still lingers under the tyranny of military governors.

OOC: I had a long winded and angry rant about how every PADA member involved in this war is a hypocrite and an idiot. But why ruin the surprise? I'm gonna sit here, eat some popcorn and watch y'all fight across the entire Pacific ocean against one of the best navies in the world (that decimated some of the best Europe had to offer last turn). Nothing can go wrong invading a neutral nation to execute your war plan. Just ask Field Marshall von Schlieffen or Pontus in this NES. Y'all are totally in the right, your voting constituency will agree with that. This is gonna be fun.

EDIT: Ignore that; I was informed the US isn't acting on behalf of PADA's wishes. PADA is good, guys. We all need to calm down.

The UPRA suggests that American actions are simply driving Hawaii into the Japanese camp.

Perhaps a milder, less strident tone, one with less overt racism, is called for?

Venezuela notes that the US is taking a new imperialistic approach towards the Pacific that they had not shown since the days of their late dictator, and with great hypocrisy they seem to be trying to assimilate the neutral nation of Hawaii.

The Popular Front

The delegates breathed a sigh of relief as gunfire died down outside. Dallas, formerly the steelmaking and gunsmithing center of the Grand Republic of Florida, had just repulsed another attempt by the Third Corps of the Grand Army of the Republic to assault the barricades separating the Populist-held from "cleansed" outer districts of this city under incomplete siege. Home of the strongest and most militant manufacturing and police unions in the nation, over the past month many populists begun referring to the stalwart metropolis as the capital of the People's Republic of Florida. With the ongoing meeting of Labor Leaders, regional representatives and progressive politicians resuming, this is quickly becoming the defacto truth.

"As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted. The Manifesto for a Proletarian Florida is the best hope for the Popular front to resist against the tyranny of Johnston and the corporations. Any questions?"

"Yes" stood a dappler gentleman, "let me introduce myself. I am Jacob Montgomery, former governor of the state of West Florida. Now Arthur..."

"Just Artie" replied the muscular leader of the powerful gunsmiths union. He grinned as he scratched his unkept neckbeard.

"Artie then. Well Artie, I can safely say a majority of Floridians want Johnston out"

"Alright then, so what's the problem?"

"Let me finish. The problem is... everyone other than Johnston! The United Front's support is more or less neck and neck with our own, while they have the advantage of being "legal". What can we gain if we support radicalism and rebellion instead of reformation under the United Front?"

Artie sighed and shook his head. "Monty, here is the blunt truth. You are an outlaw in the Grand "Republic" of Florida. I am an outlaw in the Grand "Republic" of Florida. And if he could, everyone but Brickwall "Imsoperfect" Johnston will be exiled from his "beloved grand ing republic of ing florida". Politics? Your political career in the Grand "Republic" of Florida is as dead as your hero Ferguson- shot straight through the heart! You think the United Front will risk their necks by trying to admit liberal progressives like you? no! They will do their moderate, pandering, worthless best as Johnston's lackeys."

"Now wait here!" interrupted the ex-governor. "If we stay resonable the United Front can prove to the populace that we are emphatically NOT proletarians. Although I am no longer so sure. Anyhow, this will give them leverage against Johnston so that he will be forced to resign and normalcy can return to Florida."

A loud booming laugh emerged from the union leader. He smacked his knee and chortled, tears flowing from his eyes. Finally, he wipped off his tears of joy and addressed the shocked progressive, "Monty, there is no turning back. The United Front, without "legal" labor unions to balance the lobbyists, will turn to the Corporations for support. And the Bourgeoise are always against Labor. They will always try to limit us, topple us, until they stand firmly on our shoulders, grasping in their hands our chains. There is only one answer- the United Front, get rid of corporations!"

"Supporting Labor Unions is not the same as dismantling the corporate economy!" yelled Montgomery over the cheers from among the delegates.

"I don't give a damn about the corporate economy! What we want is a reinstatement of democracy of and for the people over Florida. Proletarianism is the only way to win back our nation!"

"I agree with the goals, but never the means."

"IT IS THE ONLY WAY."

Montgomery sighed and placed his hands out for a handshake, "I think I can agree to remain in the Popular Front, as long as its core message remain "Democracy" instead of "Proletarianism"."

Artie smiled and grasped the offered hand, leaning in, he whispered, "If that is so, Proletarians like me will sooner or later split with the Progressives," he warned, "History is on our side, and the Popular Front will surely succeed. But then what? By siding away from us you risk being marginalized once more."

"Because I have made my decision, Artie. I am a Progressive, not a Proletarian. I will work with you, but only to get rid of Johnston and restore democracy." Standing asside, the former governor announced. "Speaking for my constituents, I cast my future with the Popular Front!"

"Excellent, Excellent" purred Arthur, rubbing his palms as the Progressive returned to his seats, "Any more questions? Any more support?"

I found the Great Eight populations to be interesting:

1. Russia 13,505 (+132) = 40,515,000 Military Aged Men
2. India 8,594 (+83) = 25,782,000
3. Guangxi 3,200 (+33) = 9,600,000
4. Japan 3,157 (+31) = 9,471,000
5. Brazil 2,805 (+27) = 8,415,000
6. Germany 2,686 (+28) = 8,058,000
7. United States of America 2,508 (+23) = 7,524,000
8. United Kingdom 2,110 (+23) = 6,330,000

EDIT: Added manpower estimates for military aged men based on 1 MP = 3000 Men

“The fleet’s away, now’s our chance,” shouted the Englishman.

The words reverberated across the cramped room. The table at the center, a side-ways flipped wire spool from the ship yards, played host to an assortment of documents and maps. Photos of the head of government, Eduardo Castro, and the Imperial family lay scattered about with markings in red ink scribbled across the faces.

“No, Charles,” said Philippe, the undisputed head of the organization. “The fleet is in Asia, but the army remains. Castro wouldn’t dare move troops to the East Indies now. We can’t make a move until the army is occupied.”

“But,” replied Charles, “the people are protesting the war. This is our opportunity. If we just take the movement to the streets again, like in ’09. The people got behind you then, they’ll get behind us now.”

“The people are a cruel mistress, Charles. You’re an Englishman, you ought to know better than to trust anyone to do the right thing.”

Philippe sat back on his makeshift box-stool, lifting a paper from the poor man’s table. It was a list of names of army officers that supported the revolution. There were far too few of them to make a difference. But, on the other hand, if they waited too long there would be none at all left to aid them, or even remember them. The Proletarist movement had been successfully pushed underground by the government and the new emperor. Joao II, in spite of his undeserved position, was a much friendlier force than his son and his government had proven to be.

“The Feds will smoke us out long before you choose to move, Phil,” said Charles to the approval of a few others in the room. “They busted up the house in Natal. You know that. We need to raise our banner, grab our rifles and act.”

“This isn’t America, boy,” said Philippe. “You can’t just grab a rifle and storm the capital building. We have rules. We have order. We have to do it the right way or not at all. You got that?”

“So, what?”

“A general strike.”

“Never going to work. The factories and shipyards are handing out good paying jobs by the thousands. We’ll never get those saps to strike.”

“Fine, Charlie, what’s your plan, then?”

“Assassinate our beloved Pedro.”

Well, this is the only warning that I can 100% give myself. Consider this the six-day warning to get orders in. I wil have either bestshot9 or TheLastJacobite post when the 48-hour mark hits. I personally will not be back up and running until the 26th at the earliest, but I am still on schedule to begin updating on the 28th. This also means I will be unable to reply to any more PMs or AIM queries. I will be on AIM for approximately another half hour to an hour for any last minute questions, but consider this the last opportunity. Get those orders in, and merry Christmas.

If you wish to know the terms on which we will settle peace, here they are:

1. Return all Dutch colonial possessions occupied during this conflict without further disrupting those territories in any manner.
2. Pay reparations to the Netherlands for the bulk of damages and lives lost, with lesser batches of reparations to the Confederation, Spain and Brazil, in that order.
3. Rescind all claims to the East Indies.
4. Sign Non-Aggression Pacts for a minimum of 15 years with all powers involved in the conflict to this time.

We have received your terms, but we wish to inform Brazil that we cannot in good faith negotiate with the Brazilians, since the Dutch have not acknowledge Brazil as being the primary negotiator or otherwise made clear a desire to negotiate. Should the Dutch wish to attempt diplomacy, we would be more than willing to evaluate their (or your) offer. If we were to comment on your terms, we would be inclined to say that we owe no reparations to nations who have committed their navies to such a war halfway around the around the world, in a land that doesn't belong to them. If we were to acknowledge your proposal, we might agree to this point of reimbursement provided our claim to the East Indies is recognized and the Netherlands rescinds their claim. We would no more consider rescinding any claims to the East Indies than Brazil would consider rescinding it's claims to patrol the American waters. To note, your proposed terms do have some merit. We would be willing to sign Non-Aggression Pacts once peace has been achieved. But until the rest of the world is ready for pace. We shall await word from the Netherlands regarding their support of these hypothetical negotiations.

Washington continues to misunderstand the nature of agreements the Japanese nations holds with other nations. We guarantee the existence and sovereignty of the Republic of Hawaii against any external aggressors. We do not presume to speak for Hawaii, nor do we dictate their laws or policies, domestic or foreign. Additionally, while Japan has requested Pacific Concord member to not act upon any declarations of war upon Japan, it would be a distinct possibility that Hawaii would ask for assistance from any other members of the Concord. I'm certain that other North American nations would not appreciate the actions of the United States should they trigger a war over a small island republic which has made no threats or acts of aggression. If anything, this would be appear to be a rather large bismirchment upon the United States of America, and quite possibly PADA as well.

The United States of America will not move aggressively towards Hawaii provided Hawaii agrees to provide NO forms of respite to any warship of Japan. Doing such would alleviate our fears of Hawaii being used as a staging area by Japan for operations in the Americas.

OOC: I have nothing to do with Hawaii, thus I am not a hypocrite. PADA is not an offensive alliance and whatever they do is outside of my control. Japanese fleet isn't all that great.

The Dutch Republic supports these terms, but if Japan has a different offer that is fair, and one that rightfully admits that they are the aggressor in this conflict, they can contact us, should they feel inclined to do so.

We patrol the waters of the Americas to prevent issues such as this arising, and we do so with the consent of the democratic community of the Pan-American Democratic Accord. We cannot rescind our claims to defending our allies as easily as the Japanese can rescind their claims to lands that have never and will never be Japanese. Japan will pay reparations to the parties involved in stopping this conflict in order to compensate for the lives illegally taken by your military's actions. Japan will rescind claims on the East Indies. Japan will recognize Brazil as the leader of these negotiations. For without Brazil, you may have won, but so long as the Mace of Liberty stands against you your victory is unachievable.

The UPRA applauds American restraint on this matter.

We are shocked and appalled that you are not only allowing Brazil to insert itself in the affairs of Europe and Asia, but to serve as the primary negotiator against Japan! Have you no pride, no scruples, no moral fiber? We can understand how Brazil manages to cow it's smaller, weaker neighbors into submission, but to have strong, European nations bowing to the wishes of an American democracy is truly disgusting.
