Capto Iugulum: Empires and Nations

Treaty of Jeju
1. The Korean monarch and government will permit the Swedish Empire to establish a treaty-port and center of customs in a quarter of the city of Jeju, which will be ceded to Sweden as sovereign territory. His Majesty, the King-Emperor of Sweden, will be permitted to appoint a colonial governor to administer the port authority.

2. All trade and missionaries will enter Korea through the Swedish port authority at Jeju. His Majesty, the King-Emperor's, governor reserves the right to determine the legality of all traffic into Korea, at the behest of the eminent Korean Emperor.

3. The Swedish port authority and its governor will obey all taxes and tariffs as determined by the Korean Emperor.

4. The Swedish port authority will maintain legal authority over all religious missions within Korea. The Swedish port authority, at the behest of the Korean Emperor, reserves the right to deny access by missionaries of any nationality or faith to Korea. The Swedish port authority issues a moratorium and decree against all missionary activities that undermine the authority of the eminent Korean monarch.

5. Swedish merchants and businesses will be permitted full access to Korea, in numbers determined by the Korean Emperor. Over the course of the lease of the port, the Korean Emperor and his government will raise the number of permitted Swedish merchants within Korea, at an agreed-upon rate.

6. The Swedish port authority will undertake to end all opium smuggling, or smuggling of any substances, objects or persons into Korea that the Korean Emperor deems illegal.

7. This agreement signifies the intention of friendly mutual relations between the Swedish and Korean nations and their peoples.

8. The Korean Emperor grants this fifty year lease over the "Swedish quarter" and port authority at Jeju, to be renewed or terminated as the signatories determine at the date of expiration.

OOC: He is wondering why you'd be willing to offer knowledge to the barbaric Chinese. I'd stick my head in this too, if I was in western Europe :p But alas, it is none of Kiev's business.

This would be the 36 hourish warning for the update. No orders are in that I'm aware of. Get them in!

To: Roman Empire
From: Hungary

Your price is still unacceptable. We will, however, consider a different course to pursue before committing to more drastic alternatives.

To: United States of America
From: Panama

We welcome your economic aid to help our struggling nation grow to a new level.

Awaiting New Grenada response since Brazil supported a treaty cedeing land to Venezuela.

As in if they will agree to even continue to negotiate.

Hearing this is very pleasing. Constantinople is open to alternatives to the Serbian problem outside of war. All Constantinople asks is for compensation (preferably monetary) for the lost territory, revenue, and manpower. Perhaps 150 EP over ten years?

Treaty of Belgrade

1: The Roman Empire will liberate the lands of Serbia, and assist in the organization of a new Serbian government in conjunction with the Hungarians and the Serbians (assuming its even desired).

2: The Roman Empire will relinquish all claims to Serbian territory.

3: Hungary and Serbia will jointly pay Rome 120 EP over ten years, in any way between the two, so long that each year 12 EP in total is paid to the Roman Empire.

4: Neither of these two nations will agitate the Roman Empire over territorial concerns.

Imperator Constantine XIX

We will pay for 600 students to study for 6 years. We will pay the students' fees on a year-by-year basis. Is this acceptable?

To: Spain
From: The United States of America

The United States of America does in fact not owe you 300 EP. We have thus far managed to pay 30 EP of your unreasonable demands, falling only 10 EP short. You have also, only two years ago, allotted us 8 years to pay. Our 'winner's fee' will be paid, but it won't be paid next year or the year after.

From: Swedish Empire
To: Portugal

We will be providing you with 3EP for various medical students from Swedish academies to learn from the apparent trailblazers in Lisbon.

From: Swedish Empire
To: Spain

You will receive the reparations guaranteed to you. See to it you don't spend too much of it on abusing your colonials.

After looking at my stats more carefully, I believe the artillery and cavalry brigades I bought last turn are missing.

To: United States
From: The Empire of Holy Spain

You owe us 300 EP. Our Imperial Treasury has communicated us that they have no notification of your sending the expected money. While it is true that said notification may have gotten lost, the fact remains that you have yet to send any money. The fact that you not only have yet to send any money, but that you are calling the conditions you happily accepted "unreasonable demands" and that you aren't willing to meet said conditions casts upon your nation a bad light, that of the treaty-breakers. Also, we did accept that you could pay that money within 8 years, under the belief that you only asked for such an extension so that you could pay the money you agreed in more reasonable terms, not so that you could push back the payments, expecting that we would forget about this. We will not. Of course, if you are not willing to give us the money, we are perfectly willing to accept your returning the territories that formed part of the Spanish colony of Grand Florida.

To: Sweden
From: Empire of Holy Spain

We are not the ones who dithered on complying to the treaty terms. And please, beware of what you say, for your hands are not white.

OOC: I asked EQ and he told me that, while he wasn't 100% sure, he was pretty sure that the USA hadn't paid a dime of their debt.

OOC: Well, I specifically put some money aside in my orders. I'm sure EQ can resolve this. I had also sent you (EQ) a PM with a problem I had with my stats.

Declaración de Manumisión de los Esclavos en el
Imperio de la Sagrada España

My dear and beloved subjects of the Spanish Imperial Crown,

My father's death last year brought pain and sadness to all of our hearts, for he was an Emperor who, even if sometimes had to act against what his subjects wanted, always attempted to help everyone receive what they needed. The fact that his death came some time after the war against the British and Swedish Empires and the Republic of Netherlands ended made it more painful, for it was his leadership, as well as the great efforts by everyone, from my father's advisors to the soldiers in the Imperial Army, which granted us victory.

During my years of study, while I prepared to become the Emperor, one of the things I did was to read the Bible, with the help of my friend the Archbishop of Toledo, who instructed me in the words of the Holy Book and of Our Lord. I also read accounts from people of our past, and slowly I reached a conclusion in a very important matter that my father was unable to work with in the last years of his life. I am talking about slavery.

Jesus Our Lord spoke, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." As a good Christian, it is my shame to admit I have not always followed this commandment of Our Lord, but few people - and probably none on this Earth - may say that they have always followed it with complete honesty.

However, that does not mean that I cannot attempt to give a step towards achieving what I hope will be what happens in the future, a time when suffering will not exist and all people will treat each other like brothers and sisters.

It is for this and several other reasons that I, Emperor Carlos VI de Borbón y Braganza, proclaim the following laws to be part of the Leyes Imperiales:
  • That, from now on, the commercial practice known as slave trade is to be illegalized in every corner of the Empire of Holy Spain.
  • That, from now on, anyone that attempts to engage in the commercial practice known as slave trade within the Empire of Holy Spain will be judged and condemned to prison time and fines.
  • That, in the next five years from now, every slave in the Empire of Holy Spain will be freed, and that there will be no more slaves in the Empire from that moment on.
  • That every current slave owner will be compensated for his loss.

We hope that this is the first step towards a more enlightened society, and that other nations follow our steps.

Signed
