Cats and Kittens

Sorry to hear about your cat, Zard.

So they were supposed to ring us thus morning but didn't until 5pm.

So wife went most of the day nit knowing if kitten survived the night. We were prepared to go in and say goodbye but have to do that tomorrow .

So her last 48 hours will be spent at vet. We kinda want to get different vet but options very limited.

That's so awful and I'm very sorry to hear. 🫂If it helps to go through them, do you have more pictures of her you could share? I've gone through this a few times and what I've found consoling is knowing that at the end, my cats were happy once they knew I was there.

Might take a bit b4 I post any.

Embers getting a bit old now.

So that's where it comes from. The day after my youngest passed they brought his ashes home in a box, and the box was wrapped in a cloth bag labelled "until we meet again on the rainbow bridge". I didn't know what it was referencing, but I just broke down then and there. Thank you, Valka.

I'm going to be inundated in cats, beagles, poodles, and terriers when it's my turn. There have been so many over the years who have come, spent some or all of their lives with me, and gone again. Though some of them might be more likely to seek out my dad instead.

I've never been able to read this poem without crying.

Maddy's Big Adventure

Yesterday I had a couple of people over to help organize some stuff. I kept reminding them to keep the door closed, be careful when opening it because Maddy likes to try to sneak out.

They didn't listen.

Maddy got out.

I didn't even realize it until there was a knock on the door.

The manager asked if I was missing Maddy, and that a cat matching her description was found wandering in the hallway and I could go and pick her up at a suite on the 5th floor.

The FIFTH FLOOR???!

Okay, how did she get up there? We live on the 4th floor.

Did she actually get on the elevator and get out one floor up?

WHY?

Why didn't she say anything outside the door? She did the last time she sneaked out (that was years ago and she was out for less than 5 minutes).

So I grabbed her carrier and went up to the 5th floor, knocked on the door, and sure enough, she was there. It was a young couple, with a cat of their own, and they'd been visiting someone on this floor.

They saw Maddy in the hallway, didn't know where she lived, so they called the manager. He said to take her to their suite, he'd put up notices, and he'd contact who he thought was the owner (me).

Maddy was gone about an hour, and I never even noticed (I thought she'd decided to hide under my blankets as she often does now, either for a nap or just to get away from the two strangers in my apartment).

Anyway, the people who had her said they'd given her some food and water, and when I was putting Maddy into her carrier she started to purr. I thanked them for taking care of her and took her home.

She's home safe and sound now. Note to self: Buy an ID tag. She's got a tattoo in her ear, but the address for that is outdated (my name and phone number are current).

Another puzzling thing in this is that she did not get into a fight with the couple's cat. Normally she can't stand other cats - hasn't since Chloe died. Or maybe it's just that she can't stand any other cats being in here (she became really territorial after Chloe died).

She's been sticking like glue to me today, and is napping beside my chair as I type.

Valka in a way that is a heart warming story, despite being scared to death about Maddy's whereabouts. Maddy realizes now just how much she needs you and is showing you her affection by sticking to you like glue. That is a happy ending!

I'm glad that people in your apartment complex were kind enough to care to find out who Maddy's owner was and return her to you.

I have two cats and both are indoor cats and my biggest fear is that one of them will run out the door one day when me or another family member is not paying attention.

We had a cat and she liked her sister and chased off everyone else.

One day caught her curled up on a bed with the neighbour's cat though so there's always exceptions.

I'll see if I can find a photo.

This building has 120 suites, and probably half of them have cats living there. I've done my share of taking care of neighbors' cats when they've wandered over to my door or onto my balcony (back when I lived in a suite with a shared balcony; next door had 2 cranky adults and 3 little kids; between the mom always yelling and the baby always crying, and them always letting the cat out on the balcony and forgetting she was out there... let's just say the cat preferred my side, knowing I was good for a free bowl of water and some food and it was quiet - no brats, no crying babies, no shouting humans. She had the balcony to herself, since I never let my own cats out on the balcony.

Things got out of hand, though, when this would happen on really hot days (cat out on a sunny balcony with no water) and there were times when I'd find that cat out there after midnight in the fall - too cold for a cat to be out at that hour in November. She'd perch on the balcony railing, which scared the hell out of me - I lived 3 storeys up from the parkade level, which is a long enough fall to kill a cat if she lost her balance.

It finally got to the point where I had to report this to the manager. They kept letting the cat out at all hours, leaving to go somewhere, and blaming it on the kids (the oldest couldn't have been more than 4, and you can't tell me that a 4-year-old got up at 3 am and shut the cat out on the balcony). By the time I was ready to call the SPCA, they packed up and moved. That was about 9 years ago and I hope the cat survived life in that family. I'd have offered to take her in myself since they obviously didn't give a crap if she froze or fell to her death, but I already had 2 cats and Maddy was already in her territorial mode - There Can Be Only Two!

Last year I had a visit from an orange tabby who used to live here. He'd been rehomed to another suite in another wing of this floor, but decided to come back to find his former human. I was able to get him home again, thankfully. He was a bit bemused to be wheeled around on my walker, though (I couldn't maneuver the walker while carrying him in my arms, so he got a ride).

Dex is getting on in years. Super friendly not really a Lap cat though. First winter frosts "hello human".
