Cats and Kittens

My kitten was part of an unexpected litter. Outdoor cat met a stray (or 2). Spay and neuter your pets!

Is it true Britain has banned the sale of kittens in pet shops?

Yep, anyone wanting to adopt a kitten or puppy under 6 months now has to go through licensed breeders or re-homing organisations. Eliminating third party kitten/puppy sales will reduce the financial gain for puppy and kitten farms, and it's coupled with other legislation and licensing stuff to crack down on unethical battery farming of pets for sale.

There was a big scandal over there with severely undernourished dogs which had been forced to breed repeatedly in terrible conditions, had their puppies taken away for sale after a month, and were then abandoned when they couldn't breed any more.

Good law, at any rate.

I convinced a woman to pull her Kijiji ad for kittens by informing her that 4-week-old kittens still needed to nurse and that no reputable vet would vaccinate them until they were at least 8 weeks old. She confessed that she hadn't known that, apologized, and took down her ad.

Reveille waiting for my breakfast.

Kitty Law #14: If you drop your blanket on the floor and you don't pick it up immediately, your cat is legally entitled to make it her bed for at least eight hours.

Actually, that law applies here no matter where the blanket is.

One of the home care nurses who was here a couple of days ago seemed a bit put out that Maddy was asleep in the middle of my bed (which hadn't been made). I just told her, "That's Maddy's bed, too, so she's allowed."

I don't normally sleep with a cat. Last night one of them tried to cozy up. He got nice and comfortable, started purring and loving my bare shoulder. Later he was grooming my hair, purring all the while. At 5:30 I gave up and went to get coffee.

Funny though, if you put him with a kitten, he hisses.

Here's something that turned up in my newsfeed today: Brewery putting feral felines to work

The idea is to offer a home to feral cats who are otherwise unadoptable (due to socialization issues; they don't like humans) so the cat has shelter, food, and vet care and performs a useful service by getting rid of mice and other vermin.

The tuxedo cat in the photo reminds me of one of the cats I had years ago, but he was extremely sociable (and had a black nose, rather than a pink one). Tomtat was about 6 before he caught his first mouse.

I've run into an issue.

Since I have two cats, I have two litterboxes. One of my cats only likes to use the litterbox in my bedroom. (Yes, I know. Small apartment.)

However, the other cat will use both litterboxes. When she goes into my bedroom litterbox, though, my first cat sometimes refuses to go in it until it's fully cleaned. I scoop out the poop every time and I sprinkle baking soda in it to mask the smell, but that doesn't seem to be enough.

Is there anything else I should be doing? I usually just scoop the boxes day and do a full clean once a week (litter's expensive). Closing the door won't work because the food and water is out in the kitchen.

Where is the other litterbox?

Get a third litterbox, even if you have to double up two next to each other in the bathroom or something.

We had an issues almost the same. We just took one away for awhile. (in your situation the one in the bedroom) While it was nasty for a few days, the second cat caved and started using the other one. After they got used to it we brought back the other one. And now both cats will use either one. It might not work for you, but it may be worth a try.

The other litterbox is in my mother's bedroom. Unfortunately, there's no place I could put a third one without impeding my access around the house (stupid cane).

I might try taking away the one in my bedroom, but my cat might just keep going on the floor.

Our's did a few "outside the box" things but after a few days got with the program. But every cat can be different.

I love cats and everything, but sleeping with one is out of the question. I don't want your toxoplasmosis, cutie, keep it to yourself  Cuddling is okay though.
