Alot of cool posters have left but a fair amount of trolls have left too. Hard to believe I've been posting here for almost 10 years.

Back in the day when I used to post regularly in OT, it was all very political, though this was still after 9-11. In all honesty the quality of posting is probably a bit higher now than it was 6 years ago ... a lot of the old posters have gotten more mature for one thing.

the history subforum, btw, had about 10 times the quality it has now at some point.

This is definitely true though; might be worth saying, however, that we have to recognize we're all older now and have higher standards/have seen it all before.

We have all sorts of different people here lots of perspectives. That makes things interesting. I wonder who it is that says everyone is the same. Nobody here has the exact same views on exactly everything unless we have some very clever double logins that nobody ever noticed.

This is curious, since one of the most common critique of OT (usually coming from the Right) is that it seems there are too many people with the same views/ideologies.

To be fair, this forum has a higher left wing population than right, it's just not overwhelming like a lot of forums. It creates some interesting discussions.

As far as active participants in any one thread go, I think it's fairly equal. There are more people who lurk or vote in the polls that are left-wing, at least as far as these clumsy terms can be used.

You're probably right, I can only speak for myself, but when I've read through 4 or 5 pages of a thread and much smarter people than me have already done a much better job of saying what I wanted to say then I see no reason to post (although I still vote if there's a poll .)
I imagine quite a few others feel the same as me, and so keep to mostly lurking.

I lurk too nowadays, although now it's more out of laziness than out of respect for the rest of the hooligans on this board.

Correct. At least for me. I mostly lurk. Everyone already has said anything I had to say by the time I get to a thread.

That's an interesting observation. Another place that I hung out at around the time of 9/11 got a huge difference after that as well. Though it had political before that, it got much uglier afterwards.

...only from an incredibly-American-centric position, and even then the 2000 election nearly led to a constitutional crisis as well as shaped American domestic and foreign policy for the remainder of the decade.
