Children shouldn't be mutilated. Adults can consent to whatever. I don't care enough to ban it though.

Didnt you once say you would pierce your infant daughters ears tho?

As far as male circumcision goes, I am apathetic, but leaning against. Fwiw, I am not circumcized, and a anyone with a remote scrap of parenting skill can teach their son to keep their willy clean. Its not a big deal. Wouldnt outlaw the practice however, if people really think its a big deal for medical reasons, then go for it.

piercing ears != chopping the willy

Both are 'mutlilation'...one just a little more acceptable than the other apparently.

Are you saying removing the forskin with a snip is more or less painful than shoving a needle through an earlobe? Personally, I would find circumcision due to a medical concern much more appealing than poking a hole in my infant daughters ear for simply decorative purposes.

Never knew that.

In that case a large amount of the laryngeal nerve would like to have a word instead.

Who else would like to have a word with him? I'm truly interested in what parts of our bodies are superfluous and/or inefficient, as I know there are at least a few.

How common could a medical reason for chopping off a babies foreskin be?

I'm no expert, but wiki has a section on it:

I heard about the laryngeal nerve on a giraffe dissection documentary (giraffes have the longest one). It loops around a valve in the heart because way back in evolutionary history when we were fish this was the shortest path the nerve could take.

It makes it harder to masturbate, and that's reason enough to not circumcise without any serious reason like being a mark of the covenant.

note: this isn't true

I don't think it's really a big deal either way. It's not some horrible human right's abuse that requires massive government intervention, but it's not something you need to do to be a good parent. On average, I don't think it makes a difference. (It can make a huge difference, positive or negative, based on the circumstances. But generally there's no way to tell which will apply to your child) I'm not sure whether I'd have my kid circumcised; it'd probably depend on whether the mom had a strong feeling about it.

How about the fact that uncircumsized penises are ugly? What did Elaine say about them on that one Seinfeld episode?

Elaine was a slut, who cares what she thinks. Besides, that was a Jewish show, of course they're going to try to spread their bolshevik propaganda.

Circumcision feels less invasive than an abortion for the child's future, so I'm for it if the parents want it.

Well, a lot of girls get their ear pierced at an age when they can decide for themselves - little boys get their foreskin chopped off when they're too young to tell the difference. Speaking from an uncircumcised POV, i wouldn't do that to my kids, but what parents choose is whatever.

Also, ears normally grow back once pierced (i.e the hole shrinks and eventually disappears) - I would know, considering my parents had my ears pierced when I was three-ish. Had earrings for six months, tore 'em out thrice, and my parents were like "whatever" and let it grow back in.

Foreskin, AFAIK, does not grow back - though that could be a potential source of revenue in the stem cell area. ;)

The research seems conflicted on the benefits of circumcision. About the only sure thing is that the glans would be cleaner, since there isn't a surface for dirt to accumulate on. Also, the poll is incomplete, since I am ambivalent. Parents should have the right, since it probably doesn't harm the person undergoing it.
