Civ Suggestion: Polynesia

My newest view on Polynesia is like in Native American case : which tribe would you put in game? Tonga civilization? Maori civilization? Hawaii civilization?

I don't like the bare representation of Polynesia in DoC now, because it looks like a wasteland where there is no life but jungles and jungles; but making a playable civilization is too much to ask IMO.

I would suggest just independent cities and independent Canoes around the Pacific, or to best extend, minor and unplayable civilization like Celts or Seljuk.

I still think it could be a major civ. the UP would have something to do with coast tiles or something like that, and maybe one UHV would be peaceful expansion (expand to 10 different landmasses by year X or something like that), one would be culture (generate X culture by year Y or control X water tiles by year Y) and the last one would probably be trying to resist European colonization or a big culture goal.

We have enough goals to "make sure there's no European blablabla" and in reality, I don't think they do that. I mean, I never heard about Polynesian-European war besides massacres because of cannibalism. I heard they're accepting Christian missionaries peacefully too.

Nah, about peaceful expansion. Who expand? Who is the LH? :)
Remember that 10 landmasses in DoC is like 10 or more countries today and no Polynesian civilization has ever controlled land that big, or even try to (because they respect each other islands (?), afaik.

Yeah, sure.

Then why don't you go and read the thread?

The idea was to combine all the Polynesians into one civ, and presumably add a few more pacific islands. I do agree with you that this would mean the Oceania would never get colonized, but it never gets colonized anyway and isn't important (unlike North America), so I don't have much of a problem with that.

We're doing this bro, we're making this happen.

ahahaha how could i miss that

Was this thread a kind of joke?
Because if it's not, thenI'd love to talk about my ideas of adding another very important civ to the game, The Principality of Liechtenstein...lol
Oh, the Liechtenstein joke, how creative.

I suppose I should be grateful you didn't stoop to level of citing Sealand

It seems to me that the Polynesians could be well represented by some Independent/Native cities in the Pacific.
No. I think the only interesting part would be to play them yourself. Just adding independents would be completely pointless.

It wouldn't be interesting to use indepenents or natives, but it would make sense from a historical perspective as the Polynesians really weren't unified and certainly didn't form any trans-Pacific empire. That being said, I actually think a Polynesian civilization would be cool. :D

I think objectively speaking the Polynesians aren't even relevant enough to be represented as cities at all.

I'm mainly interested in the unique gameplay experience they might offer.

I have no plans to add them at the moment.

Darn it!

This is it in a nutshell. But really, if the player wants to experience this kind of playstyle, I've played many fun non-UHV Syriac Phonecian, Tamil & Greek games in this manner.
I think people demand to much sometimes, the game is only as fun as you make it, you can even modify UHV files yourself very easily.

also, is it just me, or are the Ancient-to-early-Medieval era's by far the most fun to play in. Usually I quit if I haven't won before the 1500's or so unless the game is playing very strangley.

I find people who complain about stuff that is already in way more annoying than those who request new stuff.

Any hypothetical Polynesian UHV would be long over by that point. I would focus on island hopping and expansion.

Because that suggests that some of the things you did are less than optimal.

The likelihood of that is slim - but given the sheer amount of work you did, it can still happen.

Well yes, the annoying part is when people say "remove X" when X was something that quite a bit of effort went into.

It's not that I think that my work is flawless or beyond reproach. I'm generally open to "improve X" posts, especially when they're actually thought out.

If you mean Thailand, I don't actually expect it to be removed.

However, since I do consider it to be the worst civ (there are a finite number of them - there has to be a worst) in DoC it is a useful example to use. It's like minimum wage. Or compulsory education. It's the bottom line against which others are to be measured.

Why all the Thailand hate? While it is certainly not the best civ, I find that it is an interesting start in a region of the world that is rarely occupied, and the various UU/UB/UP all serve to differentiate from the Khmer.

That's the thing, the Khmer are already there.

I once again direct you to the different UU, UB, UP and UHV, which help make Thailand enter the modern era (well, something approaching it). If there is a problem with Thailand, it rests with the fact that the Khmer are not absorbed into it completely.
