Civ3 1.29 beta 2

I've tried downloading and installing this patch twice but it doesn't seem to affect the game. I haven't restarted my comp yet, I don't know if that makes the difference. I'm running OS 10.3.6 Any help on how to install this thing right and benefit from the batch unit upgrade feature, etc? Thanks in advance

Hi :wavey:

No, you don't need to restart the computer. How do you know it hasn't worked?

The most noticable effect of the patch is that the version number in teh bottom left of the splash screen is 1.29b2.

After that the changes are mainly under the skin. You do get to use the stack move command - hit J instead of G to mve all units of one type.

Batch unit upgrade is Shift-U with one unit of the type selected. I thought that was available before 1.29b2 though.

Thanks I'll try batch update now. I was already using batch unit movement. What is the splash screen?

The screen with the main menu on the right where you choose Load Game or New Game or .... and the big graphic of a sort of tower.

Here's a set of screenshots of the way the patch looks when it runs here. Which of these do you see? If you see them all then are you updating the copy of Civ III that you are running?

Select your Civ III folder: (you'll see I have several ;) )

Interesting, it doesn't search for my file nor does it ask me to choose. It doesn't install through the various files either (like the shot that shows mech infantry being updated). It just zips through the installation in 2 seconds when I click on the installer and then it gives me the same "installation is complete" message that you posted last. Any further advice? Thanks alot for all your help so far.

I wonder, are you running the installer, or just expanding the archive?

The file you download should be called "Civ3_1.29b2_Installer.sitx", and that should expand, either manually or automatically, using Stuffit Expander, producing a file called "Civ3 1.29b2 Installer" with an icon like an old-style iMac. You have to double click that file to get the screens shown above.

Yup, I'm using those files. I'll do it a third time and pay attention as to exactly how the process unfolds.

OK, I figured out how to make it work!

I click on the installer and it says "preparing to install. . ."
Then , it installs in 2 seconds and says something like "to install other items press continue, if done installing press quit"
So I hit continue this time and it went through and updated all the units, etc.

Normally, that "additional" installing prompt is for extra items not crucial to the running of the program, so after it had installed I was always hitting "yes, installation done."

In my case you had to press continue after the initial installation to get to ACTUALLY install. Thanks for everyone's help!

How weird :hmm: As you can see from my description of the sequence I get here, it shouldn't do that!

Hello Cybie

I don't do any editing, so there are better qualified people here who can help you.

There's a thread immediately below this one where that question is being discussed. You need the civ3edit program which is available at MacSoft's download site, and you have to run it with version 1.21g of the CivIII software. You also need to add the Add button to the editor if you want to add any new units, resources, civs etc. to the game. That's done with an extra 'NIB' file you can find in one of the recent editor posts here.

Best of luck :D

Please don't ask the same question in three places. There's only one answer ;)

Alan, is the beta2 able to open saves of the Game Of The Year Edition?

I wanted to load the attached game of an very beginner to look up what he is doing fine, and what not.

So what have I to do to load the game?

(But I will not buy a copy of the GOTY Edition ;) )

Game of the Year was just a marketing package as far as I know, not a special version of the software. That file fails to load for me because it was created with a non-English version of Civ and my software has no files or references for a 'Bautrupp' - a worker?. But apart from that it looks like a standard save from CivIII version 1.21, with various language inconsistencies that I'd need to research to understand. What happens if you try to load it?

Nothing - I cannot mark it in the load dialog box......an therefor I cannot load it....

Edit : Okay - I got it - I had to use ResEdit and add the type and the creator to the file, than it worked - up to that error message you have also recieved.
