Civ4 Beyond the Sword Patch v3.17 is out

3.17 can be installed on top of an unpatched BtS installation. It does not require 3.13.

Do you lose any of the other fixes addressed from previous patch updates, though? I was working on making a mod and couldn't get some things to work, so I tried different directories and it seems from doing so I broke my game. :( So I am going to have to do a clean installation from scratch.

Should I update with previous patches before I update to 3.17 just to make sure all the updates are fixed, or does 3.17 do all of that on it's own?

Well I tried a BTS game without any mods or patches and everything went perfectly fine the first 10 minutes, then starting in the 10th minute it started wigging out like all the other times. I thought it froze when my oracle video started but it came back after a few seconds, then over the next few minutes another symptom returned which i forgot to mention-and that is some on screen crazy. Its not that bad but say like a barely visible white square would flash on some improvements and a green line would cut across the upper right quadrant of my monitor once every 10 seconds or so, and then finally in the 16th minute of the game it froze up started playing this noise repatedly duhduhduhduhduhduh very quickly and so i had to reboot

I have no idea what this could be except somehow an issue with the files, I really don't want to have to wipe the harddrive and start over but i guess i might have to

The first thing you should always do is get the most recent official patch. Especially if you are having graphics problems, these are sometimes fixed in patches. If the problems persist, then you start to look at things like graphics card drivers etc.

Try it with BtS patch 3.17, which you can find in the forums or use the in-game updater (Windows users only - not for Macs).

The 3.17 patch includes the fixes from all previous patches, but it doesn't include all files--only those that were changed in at least one patch.

A clean install is the safest option. You can't be sure that one of the files you broke happened to be patched along the way. Always work on copies of the core files in a mod folder or the "My Games\BTS\CustomAssets" folder.

Reinstall the game and then install just the 3.17 patch. I recently did the same thing myself. All good. :goodjob:

Honestly, that sounds a lot like a hardware overheating issue to me. Are you overclocking your CPU or video card or RAM/FSB? Have you upgraded either since you last played Civ4?

One way to test this is to play a normal game until you start to see the issues, then immediately quit Civ4 and restart the game (not your computer). If it starts going nuts within a couple minutes, my bet is overheating.

Another way to test: again when it starts to have issues, alt-tab out of the game and walk away from the computer for 10 minutes. Come back and alt-tab back into the game. How long does it take to start having problems again?

Well its not an issue that patches have fixed, they were happening all in less than 10 minuts on 3.17 and 10-16 minutes on BTS um...3.03? I dont think its that hardware because i ran KOTOR for 20 minutes with no problems, and there is no other instance of issues with games up until now with this one

I am not overclocking or anything
Nothing has changed as far as hardware goes since any other time I have played, the only thing is they are older

I will try what was mentioned about exiting out and starting over again to see if it is heat

PS CRAP CRAP CRAP
yeah the fan on the GPU isnt moving at all and its hot to the touch
crap crap crap

If you're in the Southern Hemisphere :), it's Summer at the moment and heat issues are much more likely to present themselves than during the other times of year. The graphics card in my last computer sounded like a helicopter playing games in summer, but was practically whispering during winter.

EDIT Ah I see you found the problem ;). The graphics card I use nowadays is passive (fanless), and by design can run at hotter temperatures. It's not the most powerful card in the world but at least it's not noisy! (however the capacitors can still "hum" a bit)

At least you found this out before your GPU blew a gasket.

You can send my usual consulting fee to . . . :D

yeah it would seem the fan simply dosent work
I even tried flipping the little cord/outlet thing that goes from the fan cooling block to a couple little prongs on the bored both ways and that didnt help

maybe that is what happened in the first place by accident when i cleaned it, that must be it! crap, well at least i know not to do that again, would anyone know if it not be too difficult to just buy some spare parts and do it myself or take it into a computer shop and have them fix it? Or just cheaper to replace it with a new one *ati x700 pro

Your x700 is roughly equivalent to a r4350/gf9300, both of which are available in PCIe format for under $50 online in PCIe format. Assuming PCIe and unless you're on a really tight budget I'd recomend upgrading to a 4850 for $100ish (the GF9800 is significantly slower for the same price). If your PC's only AGP capable, the best you can do is a 3850, also $100ish but is significantly slower. On a tight budget a properly placedPC case fan and a few cable ties will probably work as a rednecked repair.

The sites below should help with comparison shopping a replacement.

I uninstalled Civ Complete from my C drive and reinstalled it on my D drive, but I can't get 3.17 to install.

I've tried in game, through GameShadow, and downloading from the link here. Each time, InstallShield Wizard pops up and goes through the motions, and informs me that the game has been updated, but each time I start the game up, it says it's version 3.13.

What's going on?

Check that your registry is correct. Look in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Firaxis\Civ4 - Beyond the Sword and check the INSTALL_DIR key. If not there, try HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. If it's incorrect, you can try changing it and repatching. You might have to remove the 3.17 key first.

what exactly is about this build saying?

Searching C brings up a laundry list of VCD files with titles like "catalogCiv4BeyondSword39779112632" and "CIV4BonusInfos", but nothing else shows.

XP, no Vista; other games on D have patched with no problem.

Also, I can start the game with no problem via the Desktop shortcut, but if I try through the Start Menu I get "This application has failed to start becaise BOOST_PYTHON-VC71-MT-1_32.DLL was not found."

Right-click the start menu shortcut and select Properties. What does the target say? Is it pointing to D:?
