Civilization 5 Rants Thread

i agree with most of what's been said. What stands out most for me is that it feels end of true civilization franchise and start of dollar rolling civilization now available on your iphone and blackberry.
civ and moo were games that got me hooked on strategy games. My love affair, but like all good things it comes to an end.
In a corner of my heart there is faint hope that Sid will reverse this and go back to essence of what made Civ great. But hoping in today's world run by shareholders and dollars is too much.
The king is Dead!!! all hail the new king!! who ever might be that bold developer rdy to wear the crown of Sid the magnamus

I never really liked Civ 3 either, but it's still much more complex than Civ 2.

Civ 5 is more like a console game and it's easy to tell that they wanted to attract a new, younger audience. Removal of the slider, science from population, one-time RPG bonuses instead of flexible governments, simplified diplomacy...

The key is to compare Civ 3 to Alpha Centauri, not Civ 2.

* Simplified Diplomacy
* Simplified Units (complete removal of Unit Design)
* Simplified Worker Options (mine vs farm and that's it?)
* No Economic Victory
* No flexible governments
* Neutered Espionage

The list could go on, but Civ 3 compared to Alpha Centauri is a lot like Civ 5 compared to 4.

And yet the Civ series survived Civ 3. It's fine.

I mainly object to Thormodr's idea that in order to be a long-time fan, you have to hate Civ 5 more than any other Civ game.

I always love how one person identifies his/herself as all the long-time fans of a series and proceeds to tell me what I want. I didn't want the casualized, mass market crap that is Civ 3, and yet, somehow, Civ 4 got made.

Yeah, I always love how the haters always think they can speak for everyone. What really confuses me is if the game sucks so bad, why are they even wasting time here? Go play your beloved Civ 4 and leave the Civ V 'turd' players alone, since we're such obvious 'sheep' to them.

i.e. I have no problem with people not liking a game, be it Civ V, Civ IV, Diablo III, WoW, SWTOR, or whatever, but, ffs, go spend some of your energy on the stuff you *do* like, instead of staying here being bitter, sour people.

I do play Civ V with Thal's mod a lot of the time, but I always played Civ IV with similar stuff, too. Just the way of the series for me. Fact is, when I'm done with a game and it sucks, I'll be playing something fun, rather than sitting on forums wasting everyone else's time with QQ.

Moderator Action: This thread isn't for people to tell others to go away. That's rather rude. Also, please don't call people 'haters'.

It keeps popping up in my User CP and I don't feel like unsubscribing. No, I haven't played Civ5 in the longest time. Yes, it still sucks and was a waste of time.

Easy tiger :). Just expressing our opinions. Have you ever seen how parents and kids argue and yet they love each other. It is same for us we love CIV just hate this new Face of it. as saying goes cant live without it, cant live with it!! :)

A rant with some questions. I have not read this thread and in fact I don't really read the "gaming" section of this forums, so apologies if these issues have been brought up already.

So I finally bought Civ5, after years without playing Civ. I was not planning on buying it because of all the negative reviews, but I thought the patches would surely fix most of the problems.

Anyway, I was finding the game enjoyable enough, even though it was too easy at King difficulty. But then all of the sudden and for no reason, everybody declared war on me. It started with a couple of neighbors, and on the next turn every single civ I had met joined in. Even civs who were friendly towards me just one turn before, even the ones who traded a lot of me and who had been my allies in war, everyone declared war on me, which made absolutely no sense. I was thinking of giving up on that game as even though I was the strongest civ, I could not take on an attack by everybody else, since I had large borders and strong neighbors. But then came the second shock: the AI is a complete imbecile when it comes to waging war. Instead of sending all or a large part of their army at once against my border cities, they would limit themselves to sending a couple units that could be easilly dealt with. And there seemed to be no tactical coherence whatsoever in the units sent, they were really just sending stuff for me to kill. The third shock: nevermind the fact that war was going nowhere for my enemies, who were losing a lot of units and even some cities as I begun a very slow and cautious counter-attack, nobody accepted even to discuss peace terms for over 10 turns, even my weakest neighbor who was was getting obliterated remained stubborn. The final shock: after many many turns of pointless war, everybody sued for peace offering me generous terms, even the civs who were far away and had not lost a thing in the war. What the hell happened?

What is worse, I gave the game another chance after about a month without playing due to disappointment, and yesterday nearly all civs declared war on me again at the same turn, even ones which were friendly (at least this time some civs didn't join the bandwagon, though since I quit after the initial declaration I suppose they could have joined in later).

So am I missing something big here or is the game really messed up? This sort of thing kind of ruins the enjoyment for me, the AI is at the same time too opportunistic, backstabbing and stupid.

Advice?

This is unfortunately, all too typical. I'm playing a huge map with 19 civs and every 20 turns or so the entire world decides to team up to destroy one person no matter what the previous relation was. It just runs in braindead waves. But even when my turn comes around, I'll have nothing to fear. They won't fight in a coordinated fashion and it'll be a one sided massacre.

I've never had that happen to me, but the weird AI decisions do of course sound reasonably normal (like in my recent game, my two best trading partners decided to denounce me on the same turn, and I still can't figure out why; maybe they both figured out I was going to win at the same time?). Usually, though, there are ways of mitigating it; bribe some alternate wars, turn your potential enemies on each other, side with one of them, and don't encroach.

I am playing Civ4 LOL, however, this is after all the Civ5 RANT thread ;). Plus, I feel betrayed on false promises about buying into Civ5 which sits on the shelf gathering dust. Before the moderators combined all the rant threads into this one, half the forum was filled with them, so be thankful you stumbled in this thread (or did you expect this thread to be cheery about the game LOL!). If and when Civ6 is released I'll definitely wait to read RANT threads before buying it, despite all the game review sites giving games nowadays high ratings.

Keep your military high enough and you will not face an entire opposition against you. Maybe it's just me, but when i'm stacking at least the average number of units from the demo screen i can dodge DoWs pretty easily. I played some games without a single DoW and only 1 or 2 DoWs on pangea maps and Deity.

I think there is some adaptation to make before throwing the towel. In civ4 you can win with a single warrior for the entire game but it's not the case anymore. Diplomacy is pretty much complicated and difficult to understand. It's just a more fierce beast to tame. In civ4 it's only a matter of + or - something that modify relationships. Pretty childish system and not much fun in it.

But i agree about the lame peace deals they can propose when they didn't lose a single unit.

Best thing will always be multiplayer anyway. If you enter this world and play with right people, you will understand what i'm saying. And civ5 is awesome for this.

This time I made a test: I loaded the game a few turns before everyone declaring war, bribed the main opponents to go to war with each other, moved the bulk of my army to the proximity of my borders, and focused my production on additional military units. In short, I made going to war with me even more painful than it already would have been. But surpisingly (or perhaps not), when I reached that same turn all those civs declared war on me anyway, regardless of the fact that they had other wars to worry about and that my bribery was in large part composed of resources that they would lose by declaring war on me. But they did. And the pattern repeated itself: they fought the war aimlessly, they all refused to even negotiate peace, even the ones who were beign exterminated, until after many many turns they decided to surrender on extremely generous terms.

Yep, I'm afraid the AI leaves much to be desired.

I hate the fact that a good chunk of time is spent in the Medieval time, and even the Renaissance but not the Industrial.

Its whole game industry. Saints Row 3 was just released and there is 3 DLC already. If they really wanted more money next Civilization could be RTS or shooter, why not even MMORPG. I again think they did good job, they made huge changes but still kept it old good Civ.

Believe it or not, this is an improvement over how the game was on release. I remember on my second game everyone declared war on me within two turns, with no soldiers anywhere near me. I basically turtled until I realized no units were coming, then sent four of mine off at my neighbor Japan. I killed just two of his units and then he offered me peace.... and seven of his cities, all his gold, and all his resources. The civ had just ragequit on me.

The patches have fixed the ragequitting, but the AI remains very dumb and impossibly psychotic. Diplomacy is mostly irrelevant; they are going to declare war on you, no matter how nice you are to them.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I honestly don't have a major problem with civ V.
Moderator Action: Then this post is spam.

You'll be pleased to know that their profits from Civilization 5 are being plowed into a Civilization MMO then.
