[LP] Civilization VI: Leader Pass - Discussion Thread

Leader Ability predictions:

Ana Nzinga will have combat bonus for each relic she has. (She had his dead brother turned into a traditional relic that she asked adviced from).
Would synergize with Kongo relic bonuses

Unifier Quin Shi Huang: Captured barbarian camps turn into cities.

Age of Steam Victoria: Production powerhouse

Elizabeth: Naval power

Holy Cow!!! This is way more than expected. And it's free if we own all other content? I hope the Scout Cat DLC doesn't count. If it does I'm sorry if I offended any of them.

I didn't expect that many personas either. I wonder if they looked through the forums and stole my Varangian Harald and Sultan Saladin designs. Not that I'm complaining. :)

Age of Steam Victoria sounds like something to do with the Great Exhibition at the Crystal palace, so maybe science and production related bonuses.

Edit: Also no Julius Caesar like what was expected. What if he is actually the scenario leader instead?

The real Elizabeth was such a fascinating personality. I hope they can actually capture her charisma, moodiness, and temper for once, and Civ6 seems like a great medium to do it--if they're not reusing animations again. I'd also low-key love to see an older, moodier Elizabeth, perhaps based on the Rainbow Portrait.
Do you think Firaxis could get Cate Blanchett in a studio for 15 minutes to do a few lines? I mean, maybe Sean Bean could give her a call to ask…?

St Cate saying “would you be interested in a trade agreement with England” would be the most punk thing since being able to pat the Scout’s dog.

Why is it free? There's something fishy here.
Leader pass is to drive engagement, which is a key metric as it helps push sales velocity.

I assume FXS have done the maths and concluded that it’s unlikely more paid content will achieve sufficient ROI versus other projects to be worth doing. But keeping fans engaged is worth a little bit of capex, to drive sales of Anthology and keep the IP front of mind. Everyone that buys Anthology is not just one more person buying Civ 6, they’re also more likely to be a buyer of an eventual Civ 7 and also other Firaxis products like Midnight Suns and X-Com.

Put another way, the leader pack helps drive a few more sales at the end of the Civ 6’s life but more importantly helps maximise and prime the fanbase for sales of future products. That’s likely much more valuable that trying to actually sell more Civ 6 content to existing players with all the increased expectations and additional indirect costs that would likely involve (eg marketing, patches).

I think the FXS guys are good guys and genuinely passionate about Civ and the fans. But there is also business thinking that goes into their decisions too.

I am now hoping for another Frontier Pass type DLC mixed with more leaders. Julius Caesar missing, as well as some other notable leaders like Napoleon, makes me think we will still receive some future content after all.
Yes, that must be right. But I suspect they’re likely only held back for a similar low cost bit of “bonus” leader content. I really would love FXS to develop the game a bit more, the back half still feels quite underdeveloped to me, but I just can’t see it happening unfortunately.

It’s a pity FXS clearly aren’t going to further develop Civ 6. It’s a great game as is - I still
play a lot - but for all the amazing early to mid game gameplay and really great content some stuff like Governors and T4 Governments still feel underdeveloped and the end game still feels pretty empty notwithstanding GDRs etc. I feel like development had real momentum up to and through Gathering Storm. NFP was pretty good, and added lots of great little touches, but didn’t really carry that momentum forward beyond maybe a couple of “always on” game modes like Secret Societies and Corporations.

Sad. But it is what it is. Still a great game bursting with content. If I want deeper gameplay, I’ve got EUIV etc, or even Civ V or IV. I’m still also really thrilled to get some more leaders and personas, and very excited about Lizzie in particular and a gaggle of China leaders.

And glad to have had a reason to be back on these forums again, even if it’s just for a minute.

You're making me conflicted between my love of Cate Blanchett and my desire for a more historically accurate Lizzy. :p

My guesses

I'm thinking Lincoln will have a bonus to production during emergencies.

I think Mbande will be flexible in alliances.

Saladin will be even more warlike, apparently.

Tokugawa, I think, will get culture bonuses for garrisoning Samurai in cities (yes, you will have to keep them around longer than you normally would)

Nader Shah: ??? No idea

Suleiman: hoping for a culture or city-state bonus

Yongle: exploration? Science?

Qin: barbarian allies, it seems

Wu Zetian: not sure

Ramses II: my guess, get 2 free ranged units every time he completes a wonder

Cleo Ptolemy: Science?

Sundiata: Cultural Mali

Theodora: probably similar to Civ V, maybe with some love for religious wonders

Sejong: a unique Jade Hall building for the Gov Plaza that makes Great Scientist points

Ludwig: spend gold to complete wonders

Elizabeth: unique governor

Harald: as a Varangian he will have a better relationship with his unique Temple building

Steampunk Victoria: science from Industrial Zones?

I really hope one thing the devs do for Civ7 is iterate on things more after they've been released instead of just, mostly, leaving things as they are after release. They did this a little but its definitely something that could be done more often. Like, the tech and civic trees need a rework, and the tech tree especially after GS, but they didn't really do anything with them in during NFP, which feels like a really bizarre oversight. Same with the fact that a lot of civs that needed some work didn't get anything during NFP either.

speculation about Nzinga's ability: we already saw her able to build Holy Sites. The screenshot also has "+20% other growth bonuses". As far as I can see, the only way to get that so far would be with an Industry on either Cocoa, Honey, Salt, or Sugar? Would be weird if they activated a game mode not even visible in the screenshot just to make some promo pics. So maybe the bonus is from her ability?

I'm sure this won't be the whole of it, but I imagine him getting the Jazāyerchi as a Nader-specific UU replacing the Musketman, maybe as a ranged unit capable of attacking/defending as a Melee unit (similar to, you know, the Immortal?)
I think it might be a Field Cannon with 4 movement rather than 2.

Good to get confirmation, but I’m a little concerned as to why we’re not allowed to see any real artwork yet!

Also a little baffled at the decision to have three new Chinese leaders but no new leader for Rome! I would’ve also liked to see a Maya or Aztec leader. Ah well, at least it’s free for those who already own the other DLC!

That's less related to her LA and more of the fact that she's not Mvemba, whose L"A" is that he cannot found a Religion.

My idea for a potencial secon Leader Pass. Only new leaders:

Byzantium - Alexios I Komnenos
Phoenicia - Hannibal
Poland - Casimir I the Restorer
Rome - Gaius Julius Caesar or Caesar Augustus
Babylon - Dur-Kurigalzu
Persia - Shapur
France - Napoleon
India - Babur
Sweden - Gustavus Adolphus
Sumer - Ur-Nammu
USA - George Washington
Spain - Isabella I
Macedon - Antigonus II Gonatas
Hungary - Sigismund of Luxembourg
Nubia - Merkurios of Makuria - I want a medieval Nubia in Civilization's series.

Probably too modern in Firaxis's eyes.
As I understand it, they have a general rule of "nothing newer than 100 years", with already established characters from previous games, like Gandhi, being the exception.

Just so that people aren't later surprised or upset, I'll repeat that you may need to own all DLC AND the Frontier Pass. Owning the Frontier Pass DLC separately from the actual Pass may not be sufficient as it doesn't qualify as having all Anthology content.

(I mean, upset they will be, just not surprised :p)
Talked to a friend on discord, he said "That person needs to buy Anthology, which will be free on Steam due to him owning everything already."

Aww. We have to wait 40 years for JFK.
