[NFP] Civilization VI: Possible New Civilizations Thread

Modders say it does mean.
this question is essential to how devs should prioritize modding in their development process and how their decision might affect sales.
Can anyone remember if they add a question about modding to their summer survey?

I don't follow your point. I am a very prolific modder myself and I do not see it that way.

This is probably severe optimism at work, but the more I think about it, the more I think you could be right, and Gran Colombia is taking the place of a second Northern Native American Civ. We have never before had an expansion or collection of DLC that has added more than two Civs from the Americas at the same time. No doubt the Cree alone don't offer sufficient representation for the myriad Native American cultures of North America, but with only 5 slots left there are bound to still be gaps.

So this is my second (slightly more detailed and incredibly optimistic Italy-inclusive) take:

Pack 2 - ETHIOPIA
We already know about secret societies, so I'm betting that the new District and buildings are espionage-related. Secret Society Mode is R&F/GS-only, so it must be working with loyalty, eras or governors somehow.

Pack 3 - BYZANTIUM and ITALY
This is adding a new R&F and GS-only game mode, plus new Wonders and a new map. The reason I've grouped these two together is they're both Mediterranean Civs, so the new map could be a Mediterranean map (also, if the Gran Colombia & Maya pack is any indication, they might quite like to pair a returning Civ with a new one). There are plenty of good candidates for Italian-themed Wonders, but I suppose there doesn't have to be a connection. Game mode: something to do with religion might go nicely with these two, or possibly culture/tourism? It would have to involve a R&F mechanic somehow so my guess is loyalty or maybe Ages.

Pack 4 - PORTUGAL
Another new game mode - my guess is trade or possibly exploration/colonialism-themed. Portugal could be regionally grouped with Byzantium or Italy, but the city-state thing still makes me think it's coming here. It's also theoretically possible they could put Italy here if they're adding lots of city-states and Great People, if an Italian Civ has some kind of synergy with those.

Pack 5 - VIETNAM and alt leader for MONGOLIA or KOREA
As discussed, the new leader is likely for an R&F Civ. I think it's a strange choice over e.g. China or Egypt, but I can't rationalise the requirement for R&F any other way. I'm still leaning more towards Mongolia but Korea is also a distinct possibility. I suspect this is also where the plague/disease game mode will go, since this is where we're getting the second new District & buildings, which surely must be health-related, assuming the one that comes with Ethiopia is espionage-related.

Pack 6 - BABYLON
If we are not getting another Native American Civ, I'm now thinking Babylon will go here. We could have an ancient Mesopotamia map. No idea what the final game mode could be. They might do something else a bit wacky like the Apocalypse mode. Leaving a big, much-requested Civ like Babylon until last would ensure people are still interested in picking up the final DLC too.

*edited: got the game mode exclusivity the wrong way around*
**edited again: MORE than 2 American Civs at the same time**

"Maya and Gran Colombia are up first, along with our very own "Mayan Apocalypse" Mode using the natural disaster system of Gathering Storm"

So it is Mayan Apocalypse indeed, huh?

There. So my initial impression about Maya and Apocalypse Mode feels right.

Now will the mechanic related to "Mayan Calendar" return? Will there be a random major disaster every x turns?

I am intrigued.

To my knowledge while Gedemon is considering a (well earned for their hard work) break from Civ 6 modding, I don't think @sukritact or p0kiehl are going to be taking a break? So there should still be more too look forward to. The community isn't completely disbanding :)
It's not a break, it's a retirement.

But don't worry, I'm a minority in the civ6 modders, the others that need the DLL have wisely stayed away from civ6 from the start, most of the active modders don't and won't need the DLL to make their mods.

Assyria is quite interesting civilization, a warmonger civilization but at same time developed stuff like advanced hydro engineering, siege weapons and libraries like 300 years Before greece, also they was amongst the first to have a professional army.

I hope Mayans won't have any bonuses towards Apocalypse Mode. I would like to play this civ in multiplayer even if this mode would be disabled, and disabling the mode would "nerf" the civ.

Probably something in the line of Russia blizzard ability, like it don't affect the game really.

I think a Babylon + Assyria “Ancient World” themed double pack also makes sense for DLC3. I’m just sad that it seems we can rule out an ancient pharaoh alt leader for Egypt.

If only one of the two appears I lean slightly towards Assyria given Sumeria’s ziggurat science. Just don’t make them an overpowered early game rusher like in Civ 5, and er... Gilgamesh in Civ 6.

I really don't understand this trope of "Firaxis is scared of good mods because they will hurt DLC sales!"

It's certainly not the case. Mod users are an absolute minority of Civ 6 players ESPECIALLY now that Civ 6 has proliferated to consoles; these ports have no access to modding.

So it's not some competition or fear Firaxis has with modders (which is honestly a silly concept). There's some other reason and IMO it likely has to do with 2K wanting to protect their assets, especially in the face of new competitors like Humankind on the horizon.

This and the DOTA precedent. Blizzard completely tightened the screw in their Warcraft 3 reforged. When they missed DOTA and they you see DOTA 2 and LOL destroying HOTS in the MOBA scene you can tell every lawyers in the game industry are getting cold feet about offering too much mod access.

Moding wise It is not so much about the DLL but the fact they are not releasing the available objects. (DLL would be nice though)
A small portion of the mod are using lua (most are XML based), and only a subset of them would benefit from getting more objects and/or DLL access.
Still the truth is those mods would tend to be the one providing the most refreshing experience.

Yes Sumeria is overpowered due to stacking Everything on the early game which make them get way too far ahead of everyone else. Assyria you could maybe give them some thematically fitting bonuses without making their early game overpowered (or their late game lackluster).

In my opinion the new city-states could come with any Civ pack. If Babylon and Byzantium come to they will need to be replaced as well, but the city-state being renamed doesn't mean they will be part of a new set.

I figured they would tie in the Apocalypse mode to the Maya. It apparently wasn't just coincidental.

I agree with most of that. Seems crazy to have an Alt Leader for a RnF Civ instead of eg China. Oh well.

I really hope one DLC focuses on Ideology and conflict (with some bruising stability mechanics), one focuses on colonialism and colonies / vassals, and one focuses on trade / economy. And I really hope in the updates we get some more governors, more units, and some love for spies (bring back diplomats), religion (more unique religious units), and future tech.

But, sigh, I don’t have high hopes, really.

I think the game modes will be fun, particularly when you mix and match them, but might tend towards silliness. e.g., I’m sure the Apocalypse Mode will be a hoot for a few games, and calling down asteroids with magic soothsayers will be delicious, but at no point have I been playing the game thinking “this game needs more Summon Fireballs spells like Diablo 4”. Secret Societies could also be good fun, and sound like something like the Paranoia RPG, but similarly I haven’t been playing Civ thinking “Man, this game really needs more Freemasons”.

I suspect the free updates will be really solid, but not sure how much FXS will really expand the game outside the game modes.

Anyway. I really like the approach of the season pass. I’m quite confident everything we get - actual new content and updates - will be super solid. And the new Civs will tick a few big boxes. But, yeah, I suspect I’m not going to get a lot of the things I was really clamouring for in terms of mechanics. Really hope I’m wrong about that.

All of that is a valid point, and your rightful opinion, but it has nothing to do with what I was stating. I was merely stating that there is no evidence that DLC will be locked behind a pre-order.

I get what you're saying, and it's good argument IF they make it so that if you've bought some of the individual packs, you get a discount on the Season Pass. Let's hope it works like that.

Otherwise in your example I'd have two choices: buy the individual packs as they come out having all the information on what they'll include, but miss out on the Persona Pack, or wait until March 2021 to have the full information on what the season pass will include, but don't buy any individual packs in the meantime, because that would be a waste of money.

No you're not. Plenty of people have made reasonable complaints. You just dismissed it as horse armor and called it leader skins despite it being, at the very least, eight full new civs plus nine leaders plus a bunch of new systems which can be toggled on/off.

New civs are nothing else than "leader skins" to me.
These " a bunch of new systems which can be toggled on/off" is probably what i am missing. What are they? I can not find information on any new system?? am i that blind?

Isn't it a good possibility that Kublai Khan could lead China as well?

The only new modes we know about currently are the Apocalypse mode, which is coming with the Maya and Gran Colombia Pack, and Secret Societies with Ethiopia. We don't have much info on them other than there seems to be forest fires and meteor strikes in the Apocalypse mode.

In my opinion the new city-states could come with any Civ pack. If Babylon and Byzantium come to they will need to be replaced as well, but the city-state being renamed doesn't mean they will be part of a new set.
The reason I've honed in on Portugal for Pack 4 is that out of all the city-states we are likely to lose with these new Civs (Palenque, Lisbon, Babylon, Antioch, Bologna...) only Lisbon was in the base game, so no matter what version of the game you're running, Lisbon would need to be replaced. But I agree that it's possible new City-States could come with another Civ instead - possibly Italy as I suggested in my post. We still don't really have any Civ in Civ 6 that specialises in peacefully taking over City-States (unless you count Eleanor with the flipping) but I hope, if we do get Italy, it will incorporate something a bit like that.

Isn't it a good possibility that Kublai Khan could lead China as well?
Possibly, but my guess is not, since if he could also lead a vanilla Civ, there would be no need to specify that R&F is required.

From what I understand 'Modes' are mechanics that you can turn on and off.
It would be like Corporations in civ 4
