[NFP] Civilization VI: New Frontier Pass Discussion Thread

I mean, they specifically said they were going to use the Modes system as a way to deviate from historic accuracy. So it's pretty much as advertised.

Yeah, not saying they misled anyone, just talking about the design focus.

Fun Fact:

In this pack we have a first, in the past we have had the case where City States become part of a new Civ's city list ie Palenque now being on The Maya city list.

However, in this update we have the first case of a city on a city list being upgraded to a City State with Milta going from the Aztec city list to being a City State.
I do remember that Granada was on Spain's city-list actually until the Vikings DLC.

First two Civs I've met, Gran Columbia followed by the Mayans. Do you think they skew the Civ pick RNG when they release updates like this?
Probably. My map is filled to the brim with Maize and Honey, and all six new city-states showed up. (I'm playing as the Maya, and Gran Colombia is there because I specifically put them in.)

I agree. And I would like to think of the Apocalypse mode as a story of a pessimistic, bleak future between disasters and nature's wrath of Gathering Storm, modern warfare of GDRs, that leads to Red Death. I imagine it is their take of a nuclear apocalypse but only presented by comet strikes.

Gotta say I'm not a fan of the new trade interface that splits things into one time/30 turn/agreement categories, becuase now you can't fit 3 things on the screen at a time. All the time an AI says "hey you have a luxury, let me give you 4 gold, 3 gpt, and open border" (or something like that) so this is common.

I once accidentally went to war because the 'Joint War' part of the trade was below the fold.

You can drag down the line to make the upper segments larger (click in the middle and drag). It helps, but I still find it a convoluted design that was completely unnecessary. Before they had a simple icon to distuingish gpt from gold once, and now they need to put wording on top? Same for "agreements". I don't need that word to know what open borders are. Definitely a step down from the original design.

I didn't even read the patch notes, I completely lost my interest. I waited all this time just to be greeted with a price here in Brazil that is unfair and unrealistic. It feels like 2K didn't even consider the difference in price between what we paid for GS last year and what they are charging now, almost 3x more than GS. I can't justify paying that, the content offered just isn't worth the price being charged.

unfortunately, due to the disproportion of the price here in Brazil (whether due to exchange rate variation or not), paying 230.00 reais, and the value of the transfers did not reach 80.00 reais is not worth it. Firax I will spend on other games for now.

The real has dropped to 1/6 the value of the dollar, compared to 1/4 at the time of GS and 1/3 in 2016. This might be intentional of them and waiting it goes up a bit.

I'd love to see forest growth added to the game apartment from fires - it was in at least one previous version of Civ. Something like a random chance of growing on an unworked and unimproved plains or grassland tile adjacent to at least two forest or rainforest tiles.

Alpha Centauri as well. Would love this.

But you can resize the window though?

They said it was to slow down exploration, to make the exploration phase last longer. I also dislike it a lot, annoying that my units has a move left but can't use it.

Have you tried playing with old world age settings? It can be pretty fun. Still enough mountains and forests for the Inca etc, but considerably reduced. AI seems to handle it better as well since you're less likely to get huge campus adjacencies early on and it's just easier for them to move troops around.

Convinced this is the case. I've met all the new city states already.

Just to point it out.

One of the soothsayer promotions is related to plague. I think its called 'plague carrier' or 'plague user' or something. It's the one that makes them automatically siege enemy cities when standing next to them.

This might dent the Hope's of people hoping for a plague game mode later on. This could be plagues implementation in civ vi

I'm really not sure where to put this little aside, but the Fountain of Youth is on my first map and I've just noticed the wind chime noises it makes. Very pretty!

Unfortunately I have to fight Suleiman to settle it before he can which will somewhat destroy the peacefulness

Funny you should mention that, my Gran Columbia game involved Ghengis trying to invade my Fountain of Youth city.

So I got 6 free cities :D

There's an article about the game from GameDaily.biz, speaking with the New Frontier Pass Lead Producer Amanda Bonacorso. In it they discuss how they approached the development of the civs in the pass. I thought it was interesting!

https://gamedaily.biz/article/1750/...-years-on?amphtml=1&__twitter_impression=true

Some quotes from that article:

"Bonacorso explained that the leaders and civilizations Firaxis has chosen for the New Frontier pass represent a combination of ones that fans have been asking for, and ones that the team has discussed internally for some time."

“For us as developers, live service means an ongoing commitment to keep the game alive through new material and through continued updates to the base game--things that prevent the game from settling into an established pattern of play,” Bonacorso explained. “For us, this year is very much about our team learning how to treat Civilization VI as that live service game: putting out new material, seeing how our fans react, and trying new ideas.”

"Bonacorso said that developing a new leader or civilization first and foremost about introducing more variety into the Civ VI experience. The civ development process begins with gameplay style, followed by seeking a historical analogue."

This is a really good sign for those hoping for more unique civilizations. It is true that the Maya can be seen as the first true 'Tall' civ in Civ Vi. Gran Colombia is just nuts

I'm looking forward to seeing what the other new civs do

I wonder how this will affect all the mods. Wait and see I guess. I just purchased but some of it is hokey. Bermuda Triangle? On the whole though, I'm excited about this. I still play C6 a lot.

I think it also might be a possibility of how they might get implemented in another game mode. It can very well be that a plagues will be a way that cities could randomly be put under siege, or on purpose, and might need special units and buildings to prevent it.

IIRC, the price of the expansions here in Brazil wasn't a direct conversion of the dollar price before. I might be wrong on that, though.
Still, in my opinion, launching a game at this price in this country is just bad business, especially in the middle of a pandemic. I'm relatively well paid (given the Brazilian average) and I still can't justify spending 230 bucks in a season pass. At this price range, I could buy all of the Endless Universe Collection, or Total War Warhammer II and all its DLC, or just pre-order CKIII and save 206 bucks. I don't think the Brazilian public will buy it, plain and simple.

Has the loyalty mechanic changed? New to playing Alexander but I am getting cities I have captured flipping in a few turns even with a governor, making a game i thought I was doing well in a total waste of time after two failed wars. i.e. I have to keep retaking the same cities and get bogged down and weakened.
