[NFP] Civilization VI: Possible New Civilizations Thread

For all the talk of a modern or a southern African civ, I'm surprised that there hasn't been any mention at all of Botswana and Seretse Khama. Turning of the world's poorest countries into one of if not the most prosperous country in Africa with the continent's oldest continuous democracy is quite a herculean achievement!
I’ve never heard about this. Can you explain?

Edit: Looked into him, it’s pretty cool. He seems to have been the Southern African equivalent of Thomas Sankara in terms of what he achieved (albeit a proponent of a very different political and economic system). I’d personally prefer to see the Shona in that region but I’d take Botswana led by Khama
I think we have enough more interesting possible Civs to explore in Africa or even South America than another modern nation like Argentina or South Africa. This is Civilization, not Realpoiltics :mischief:

Civilization persists to the modern day, and both civs in question are undoubtedly extremely influential in the modern day (and have been since their independences). South Africa was a nuclear power (they disassembled their nukes but nonetheless, that speaks to their magnitude on the world stage). Argentina is a regional powerhouse. There’s a number of civ’s I’d like to see first, sure, but let’s not act like recent history doesn’t also develop civilizations.

This debate is never going to go away. The definition of civilization for this game has always been civilization=playable faction, which some people fail to forget. It clearly has never not included modern nations, considering America was always in the game.

That being said the only modern nation I would want is Argentina, but even then at this point I can live without it because we did get Gran Colombia.

Well .... someone* should go update the Features Thread

*aka me

In that case, are you aware of MoorTires?

Forget about Argentina.
Spoiler Andrew Johnson [FXS] likes.. :

Everyone knows that Finland would get a sauna. :p

Me too, I'm fine with Bolivar, so I think there is no longer a gap in the modern Spanish nation to be filled. Although if there is another round of passes with another South American civ, Argentina could enter.

if we get another chance at a SA civ, I’d like to see the Muisca or Guarani first, but maybe Argentina after that

that would be a no

On SteamDB we've already identified that SoonTM as the DLC for the September Pack. There were none others left until they introduced another DLC with the code-name MoorTires. There is disagreement about whether it means anything or not. But many of us who think it does mean something agree that the Moor part indicates a North African civ for November.

either north africa or portugal. It still could be either one.

Both would be nice. Although I find Muisca unlikely at this point, Guarani could happen. Also, Guarani would cover an empty area on the map :p.

muisca won’t happen in NF for sure since Hunza got added, but second expansion hopefully. There’s no city overlap even if there is geographical overlap, but nonetheless i hope we get to see them

You said you’d like to see the Muisca or Guarani first. Agree! But this means we must wait to 4th Season Pass to call Argentina out. ;) Now it's too early and too many Civs deserves those five spots more.

That's a strong possibility

I think South America is complete for VI's purposes. The only real gap in the map are Paraguay/Uruguay and I think they would make much more sense as a Guarani city-state.

well since they picked 2 latin american (geographically) civs this pack, if we get another season pass, hopefully we’ll get the guarani and/or muisca

According to a leak we should get Vietnam in January.
If we do get anything from North Africa I would personally prefer a pre-Islamic Berber civ.

Oh, absolutely. I also prefer a pre-Islamic Berber civ if we're getting something North African

The civ in AoE II is called "The Berbers", but is post-Islamic, as that's the time period that AoE II is set in.

Trust me, I'd also greatly prefer a Zimbabwe/Shona civ with Nyatsimba Mutota due to their historical significance. It was just that South Africa usually takes up so much of the spotlight as far as modern African nations go that I felt other options like Botswana deserve a mention at the very least.

Furthermore, I feel that I could do a decent job of arguing that Botswana has more positives and less negatives than South Africa such as not being restricted to being a post-colonial nation with one leader.

I'll certainly take a look into Thomas Sankara and Burkina Faso, he sounds fascinating. I'm also thinking that we'll probably see Morocco or a Berber civ later on in New Frontier but these comments have certainly helped in showing how many more spots in Africa could use more attention.

As for South America, I don't think we'll see anymore from that continent either in NF though I wouldn't mind being proven with a surprise Muisca, Guarani, more sophisticated amazonian people, etc.

Yeah, I don't really want another post-colonial Civ. I'm very happy we got Gran Colombia, I wanted them in the game for a while, but after that I think we should focus on nations that are actually native to the geographic region.

Besides, with South Africa we kinda have the region covered by the Zulu. I mean heck, Zulu is the most widely spoken native language in South Africa, so it's fairly representative of the region.
