New Melania Trump statue in Slovenia gets mixed reviews
A tongue-in-cheek statue of US First Lady Melania Trump has appeared on the outskirts of her Slovenian hometown.

US artist Brad Downey hired a local chainsaw artisan, Ales Zupevc, to carve the likeness out of a tree trunk outside the town of Sevnica.

The result was a wooden rendering of Mrs Trump dressed in a blue coat with a club-like hand gesturing to the sky.

Some residents described it as "a disgrace", a "Smurfette", saying "it doesn't look anything like Melania".

Downey told Reuters news agency he wanted to "have a dialogue" with the US political situation.

The artist has an exhibition in Slovenia's capital Ljubljana until late August. The gallery reportedly suggested the statue "might only be a slapstick prank" in a leaflet.

Downey's previous works include Wisdom Testicles and Cactus Hand.

Sevnica has become a tourist magnet ever since Donald Trump was elected US president in 2016, and Ms Trump - a famous former resident - became the first lady.

Pretty sure he's doing stuff like this on purpose. It's not going to cost him support from his voters, but it does win sympathy from having snooty liberals piling on him again. Distracting his opponents from discussing real issues is a bonus.

I'd rather not attribute intelligence to something that can be explained far more simply by the man's sheer stupidity and complete lack of shame and decency. Remember that when he was accused of actual felonies which he didn't commit and he should have given a medal for and they were his type anyway he made the same kind of statement and never really bothered about accusations of rape, tax fraud, employment of illegals, collusion with foreign powers, bribery, etc. etc.

Add to it the fact that the American public, as a group, can be said to be a bunch of erratic, indecisive idiots, and you have a splendid feedback system.

Question: Wasn't the original purpose of the Clown Car threads meant to be a joke about how many candidates the Republicans were Fielding in 2016?

If so, then wouldn't it make sense that it is the Democrats who are the clown car this time around? Or is it different because you all happen to agree with the assorted lunacy they parade on stage?

I've explained this several times now. Here's me quoting my most recent explanation:

The original Clown Car was a non-RD thread for making humorous observations on the large field of Republican candidates in 2016. When one particularly clownish individual emerged as the nominee, we realized how inadvertently aptly named the thread was and started its second incarnation. When that clown took office, Clown Car became our non-RD thread for commenting humorously on his presidency. His finally being having a check on him from one branch of government [with midterm elections] is likely to generate new forms of clownishness, so I'm all for a fourth installment timed for Dem's taking control of the House tomorrow. The meaning of the title has morphed over time, is all I'm saying. If we need a non-RD thread for all the 2020 Dem candidates who are likely to emerge, maybe we need a new metaphor that combines "many" and "humorous." (Plus some conservative posters with a sense of humor.) Trump would seem now to own "Clown," since the whole metaphor didn't at his inauguration morph to Crazy Train.

We probably should have a thread for making fun of all the Democratic candidates running in 2020, but, again, we'd first need conservative posters who are funny.

The Trump administration has been labelled "inept", insecure and incompetent in leaked emails from the UK ambassador to Washington.

Sir Kim Darroch said that the White House was "uniquely dysfunctional" and "divided" under Donald Trump.

But he also warned that the US president should not be written off.

The Foreign Office said the leak of the memos to the Mail on Sunday was "mischievous" but did not deny their accuracy.

The White House has not yet responded to the revelation of the contents of the memos, but it could test the so-called "special relationship" between the US and UK.
